It *is* a .iso file as provided, isn't it?? Filename is supposed to be lubuntu-lucid-20110731-i386.iso which has only one period in it, and ends in .iso, so even brain-dead Windows-style apps that use the .??? suffix to guess at file types should be fine. That was the idea, anyway :) I used wget and Firefox to download it as a test, and both worked fine for me. Virtualbox is buggy in handling filenames with very weird characters in them (like Sanskrit काचं -- I tend to test UTF-8 handling with *really* unusual characters!), but my test ISO used only normal boring USASCII in its filename... Anyway, most folks who have been using Linux since at least April 2010 will by now have learned to use wget as their trusted download tool of choice, right? So wget -c http://phillw.net/lubuntu-lucid-20110731-i386.iso should work in any Linux (or FreeBSD or NetBSD or Solaris) with wget installed, and also in Windows if you install the GNUwin32 wget and put it in your $PATH (which people who do much downloading of big ISO files in Windows would be well advised to do, in my view!). I think wget exists for Mac OS X too, but I lack the details. > My only other thought, that will possibly cause some discussion is > the version of pcmanfm. And more generally, on updating packages... yes. My sense is we should do the basics first. So: (1) get a working 10.04.3 image out there based on lucid and lucid-updates, and then (2) we can further enhance it as time and interest allows with newer versions of stuff, backports, etc. > As it is a community rebuild, would getting rid of pcman 0.5.x and > popping on pcmanfm 0.9., ... May I ask the obvious question: Has someone packaged pcmanfm 0.9 for Lucid, and got it accepted into lucid-backports ? That would be the "official" way to go about doing this, and it would benefit existing users of the Lubuntu 10.04 release who want to enable lucid-backports and update things, as well as users of a new 10.04.3 image. I don't see the package there in lucid-backports. HOWEVER: *first*, the 10.04.3 image needs to work as designed, and actually install to a hard disk :) I'm about to start looking at that. I think I may have used an image archive (casper, isolinux, etc.) from the 11.04 alpha timeframe; maybe using the one from the original Lubuntu 10.04 ISO would be more appropriate. All the lucid, lucid-udpates and lucid-backports packages for i386 are now here in my local repo, so I should be at the "ten minutes to make a new ISO" stage for Lubuntu 10.04.3 now. Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Test Lubuntu Lucid 10.04.3 ISO image available
It seems that Chromium, and most certainly Oracle VM bitch out big time at the filename, when I renamed it as .iso, it was a happy bunny. Out of curiosity, I ran a md5 on the filename as per the ftp, it was the same, so I thought "what the hell"... My only other thought, that will possibly cause some discussion is the version of pcmanfm. As 10.04 and pcmanfm never sat happily with smb stuff, we were trying out pynieghborhood back then, to no avail. As it is a community rebuild, would getting rid of pcman 0.5.x and popping on pcmanfm 0.9., along with it's friends, or should I scribble up a set of notes for people to do it manually? I did think of asking to actually remove pyNeighborhood, but am not sure if that falls in the 'job description' of a point release! @everyone In theory, at least, we are just updating pcmanfm to the latest version. I'd appreciate the teams views on this one (not to forget PCMan, himself!). My view is that we did say that we would support and backport developments to 10.04. I personally prefer using the best PCManFM available for a the 10.04.3 release (even though only a community release, like 10.04 was). @jonathan, sorry if that causes you a headache if the team agree to use the 0.9 PCManFM. In the long run, I think it will be easier to offer support if all the lubuntu releases are on 0.9.x for PCManFM. For PCManFM to be able to continue receiving updates, I am surmising that a path to an upgrade path will have to be made for it. Glad you or the computer remembered the log-in details for my server area, feel free to use it for anything that you wish for any stuff you are doing. I may as well get my $15 / month worth out out of it (It was only supposed to be for a couple of months, 18 months ago!) Regards, Phill. Regarding the lack of an install icon: I booted the Live CD this time choosing to "Install" but it still booted to the Live Desktop. As I browsed about in pcmanfm I found the Lubuntu image and once opened it shows an install icon. I posted a screenshot here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=11104452&postcount=149 I didn't try clicking on that yet to begin the installation but I wanted to let you know what I'd found. Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Test Lubuntu Lucid 10.04.3 ISO image available
I just booted that original Lubuntu 10.04 CD and "Install Lubuntu" is on the desktop, whereas on the new 10.04.3 CD the only desktop icon present is My Documents which appears to open "Home". One other minor thing, well a difference between the two, the F6 option on the 10.04 CD says "Other options" as seems normal, but the 10.04.3 CD says "Password", although pressing F6 displays the expected options. I'll run a few more tests ASAP. Oh, as far as I tell pcmanfm and all of the lxde apps seem to work well. Although I'm still quite new to Lubuntu so I could easily overlook something, but mounting filesystems (including a data flash drive) and browsing through system files seems to work quite well. I'm very impressed with the simplicity and functionality of pcmanfm, IMHO it's a true work of art, very intuitive. Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Test Lubuntu Lucid 10.04.3 ISO image available
The first thing I notice is that there is no "Install" icon on the desktop or in the menu to allow installation from the Live Desktop. You can of course reboot and begin the installation process from the boot menu. I just happened to look though and I see that I have an original Lubuntu 10.04 Live CD so let me do a quick comparison. I'll still go ahead and run through three installation scenarios (an "entire disc" install, followed by an "auto-resize" install, and finally a "manual partitioning" install) just to be certain no cats are eaten ;^) I also failed at running a "persistent" session with the Live CD using a "casper-rw" partition but I need to repeat that test to be certain what went wrong ... there's always a possibility that I goofed. ATM I don't have a spare flash drive to create a Live USB, but when I was iso-testing the Ubuntu 10.04.3 images I found that bug #645818 still existed so it's difficult to create a Lucid Live USB with some newer versions of "usb-creator". Also I may be unavailable for a few hours. I've been trying to get most of my "physical work" done early here before the heat sets in. I'm grabbing it now, however as my b/band link out here in the beautiful countryside is about 256k/s, it will take a couple of hours. I'll have a play with it in VM once it has arrived. As for Language packs, this still seems to be up for discussion. IMHO having the basic ones at install with the option to install any of the others later does seem a reasonable way. Regards, Phill.
