Re: [lubuntu-users] lenovo_wmi or acer_wmi for Lenovo laptops (64bit)

2018-02-02 Thread Richard H. McCullough
With a new Linux kernel this week, Lubuntu failed to boot sometimes.
When it happened this morning, I read the entire system log.
It looks as though the acer_wmi problem may have been a red herring
which covered up the real problem: Windows 10 did not shut down properly.

Here are some interesting excepts from the system log:

If ACPI driver is available, use instead of native driver
Loaded firmware version 39.31.5.1 build 35138 op_mode iwldvm

acer_wmi: Acer Laptop ACPI-WMI Extras
acer_wmi: Unsupported machine has AMW0_GUID1, unable to load

The disk contains unclean file system (0,0)
Metadata kept in Windows cache, refused to mount
Failed to mount '/dev/sda6': Operation not permitted.
The NTFS partition is in an unsafe state. Please resume and shutdown
Windows fully (no hibernation or fast restarting), or mount the volume
read-only with the 'ro' mount option.
mnt-d.mount: Mount process exited, code=exited, status=14
Failed to mount /mnt/d.

Unit mnt-c.mount has failed.

When I installed Lubuntu 16, I specified: mount partitions 4 and 6
C:Win 10 Pro on /mnt/c
D:Data on /mnt/d

FYI

The attached spreadsheet shows the partitions for my dual boot Lubuntu 16 and
Windows 10 Pro.

When I re-installed Windows 10, it set up the first six GPT partitions to go
with my partitions (4 and 6).

Hi,
I am glad you seemed to have figured out all your issues!
If you end up finding out a solution to this problem, please let us
know.  Though hopefully it is simply a bug in the MS Insider Preview
which they will fix, rather than a strange new feature.

I'm now convinced the system clock resetting to London (UTC) time is not a CMOS
battery problem.

Other people are complaining about this Insider Preview problem on the
Microsoft Feedback Hub.

Israel,

 Thank you!
Finding the modules was the key to answering my questions.
I found the same two modules (acer-wmi.ko and hid-lenovo.ko)
and lsmod | egrep 'wmi | lenovo' gives:

 wmi24576 2 wmi_bmof,ideapad_laptop

 In answer to your questions:
I used unetbootin to create a live Lubuntu 16.04.3 on flash drive.
I assumed that unetbootin checked the md5sum.
 I executed Lubuntu "Software Updater".

 I decided to try re-installing.
I am now on release 4.13.0-26-generic, which is the same release that failed
previously.
This time I see no problems.

My conclusion is that I previously had a corrupted kernel.

The clock gives London time on Windows and Los Angeles time on Lubuntu.
I'll check cmos battery.
