They see something good in the project, want to make it better, so they
buy it up. If they leave the project to do what it wants and just give
it funding to realize its goals and share some of the tech. back with
them, that's alright. If it doesn't, it could go any number of ways.

If you look around, they are now more platform-agnostic, run a very
large global network, and offer their services to a number of
organizations that are willing to pay for
I am personally not dogmatic about the services I use anymore. I use
GitHub, GitLab, BitBucket in my day-to-day work, and the amazing thing is
that 80% is the same, the 20% differences are catered for in the workflows

Also, gitlab (to where most people are moving) has an open source version
of its git software that you can use to self-host - which is something I
