I'm not used to this terminology, but shouldn't it be f4? F over middle c, that
is (sometimes
written an octave higher like in guitar notation).

A quick question. Someone whom I know plays double bass, he has asked me if
he can accompany me on one or two pieces. Would he have to tune his bass
differently to norma,l given the tuning of an 8 course lute and if so to
what?.

one that includes warhorses like the C Minor Fantasie
and L'Infidele Sonata, doesn't exactly strike me as
the obvious choice for a lute made in 1590.

your argument again is fair, particularly if we consider the original
date fo the Rauwolf (c;. 1590) and its long history; thus indeed
Weiss wasn't even born for
nearly a _hundred_ years after this Rauwolf was made!.
In the last issue of the LSA Quarterly we had a
nice interview article with Lindberg, where he
talks about buying that lute and the thinking
behind the set-up of the bridge so that it would
work for both renaissance and baroque music. If
