[LUTE] Re: Bach's bass lines

2008-02-23 Thread Stuart Walsh

A 78cm 10c bass lute in D (presumably Renaissance tuning?) - wow - that
sounds like fun. Wish I had one. Wish I had a gallichon in A, 95cms. Wish I
had an archlute. I do have an 11c - not designed for powerful continuo
playing - a baroque guitar - not suitable for Bach's bass lines - and a
theorbo arriving soon. I'll just have to fumble my way through somehow,
playing what I can. Martyn has very kindly offered to loan me his mega-large
gallichon in A, which intend to take him up on. It will probably lead to
more debt, in that I will doubtless want to buy one. It never ends...

Rob

Rob, before you acquire every type of bass lute thingy that ever existed
on a quest to play a Bachian bass line: what about sustained notes?
Imagine the supercilious glance of the cellist as she slowly bows long,
long notes. Perhaps she gets a bit louder or quieter, perhaps a hint of
vibrato: all when playing/bowing one note. And then she looks at you and
says' OK big boy plucker, how long can you make yours last?'

Of course you might not be playing with a cellist and if you are, it
might be a bloke. And maybe there are no long notes to sustain.

Dear Tuomas,

I just got three straps (french: bandoulières) for theorbo, archlute
and guitar by José Antonio Ahumada, Paris, France, total 115 € plus
shipping. They are really wonderful and not at all slippery. I know that
many french lutenists use his straps. Please ask him for details and
pictures:

used several straps in the past but somehow they haven't been suitable for
lutes; either too slippery, difficult to adjust when moving from one
 instrument to another etc...

Nigel North's strap was excellent. Very convenient and stable. From where
 can I get something similar?

[LUTE-BUILDER] Re: a pedestrian question of course widths

2008-02-23 Thread demery
All plucked string instruments share two design challenges - players hands
vary in size, and players expectation varies according to what other
instruments are played.

When you are the player you can interact with the builder and come up with
a solution that suits both of you. A builder making instruments on
speculation has to make a decision to build for large, small, or medium
hands, looking at a variety of instruments to see what works.

Strings move when they sound, this requires some room, lacking that room
makes for (usually) unwanted buzzing noises. Bass strings are at lower
tension than trebles and need more room. Strings unlikely to be sounded
together can be closer together, but not too much so because damping is
uncommon and successive play is not uncommon.

The rest is best left as an excercise for the reader :-)

In the worst case scenario one could reconstruct the score from midi, such
as Martin y Coll

Josephsons are very good, and I've also had excellent results with the
small, clip-on mics you can find at Radio Shack and places like that.
