MAJOR ISSUE: The layout styles (title, author, section, subsection,
etc.) are no longer shown in the pull-down menu on the left of the LyX
window; it is blank now.
I did some testing during the weekend. AFAICS, the layout box is not linked
correctly internally, i.e., method layout()

No. I use SuSE gcc version 3.3.4 (pre 3.3.5 20040809). But I read somewhere
that this switch (despite the name) is also helpful on some
valgrind --tool=memcheck --workaround-gcc296-bugs=yes --leak-check=yes
