Libertine support LyX version 2.1.0 (beta 1)

2013-08-01 Thread Dr Eberhard Lisse
The latest version of libertine in MacTeX 2013 (updated with tlmgr)
lacks the file libertineMono-type1.sty.

I took libertineRoman-type1.sty, modified it accordingly, put it into my
local tree, texhashed, reconfigured LyX and it works.

Cool.

 If I add the plain

Re: Complaints about LyX on Mac

2017-08-14 Thread Dr Eberhard Lisse
Jean-Pierre,

I use a similar setup, just BasicTeX because of the smaller foot print
with additional packages loaded as needed and WIndows7 and Windows10
virtual machines in the latest Virtual Box.

buffer-view.sgvz is displayed as icon in the text without issues as are
all the others.

I don't use inkscape, but have librsvg installed (via homebrew).

Once that is done a reconfigure in LyX will find rsvg-convert which
does as well but with much smaller footprint (and I think also faster).

Inkscape on the Mac requires a X11 servier, ie XQuartz.

The Examples are in (and below)

 /Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/examples/

I am an elderly Gynecologist, running my practice on LyX since 2004 and
find this extremely easy.

Re: Problem importing latex files

I came across this issue when using tex2lyx directly (in one of my
workflows) on MacOs 10.13.6

I can look on my laptop with Mojave tonight :-)-O, where LyX runs
otherwise without issues, I haven't finished testing all of my
workflows, but assume I'll upgrade the iMacs in the practice to Mojave
this weekend.

I have done

sudo mkdir -p /Users/Shared/LyX/utilities/lib
sudo chown -Rv $(whoami):admin /Users/Shared/
pushd /Users/Shared/LyX/utilities/lib
ln -s
/Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Frameworks/Hunspell.framework/libhunspell-1.3.0.dylib
$(pwd)
ls -las
popd

which (the symlink part) achieves the same :-)-O

With regards to how to do this in FInder, one could look at making an
alias and moving that into the Shared directory.

I have, however hunspell 1.6 installed with homebrew which is not seen
after a Reconfigure.

I wonder while you are fixing the build procedure (I assume the library
could be accessed withing the application but don't undertstand those
things) if you could make it look for a system wide hunspell
installation and use that?

And, while I have your attention, would it be possible to give tex2lyx
(and lyx itself) a -q (--quiet) option?

I can not confirm this.

I am a long time LyX user in production (I seem to have switched from

of different boxes (from iMini via the trashcan MacPro to a 5k iMac) and
laptops (12 and 13 inch airs).

The only issue I am having sometimes is LuaLaTeX being 3 times slower

This is a very important suggestion.

I am keeping an Ops handbook for my setup which runs to 600 pages.

I use the listings package to include config files and program listings

they are mangled to be quite useless.

Any way of achieving this (either as attachment (or even via Copy &

Re: Python compiler infects "immutable" bundle - how to avoid it?

2020-02-22 Thread Dr Eberhard Lisse
On Catalina (10.15.3) /usr/bin/python is symlinged to
/System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/bin/python2.7

Python (3 and/or 2) on the Mac is easily installed via Homebrew (i nto
/usr/local)

So is LyX (as what is called a Cask), and within Homebrew that could
lead to a dependency being defined so that if LyX is to be installed
Python must also be.

Re: on macOS new user experience likely to be frustrating

2020-02-14 Thread Dr Eberhard Lisse
I have none of these problems but then I have been using LyX on a daily
basis since 1998 (v0.12) (on Linux at first but since 2005 on the Mac
in a busy Obstetrics and Gynecology practice)

And, I have installed 4 systems recently which all work out of the
box...

Here is what I have tested today:

MacOs 10.15.3
LyX 2.3.4.2

I don't install TeXLive 2019, not even MacTeX-2019, but BasicTeX
straight off of

http://www.tug.org/mactex/morepackages.html

At update time I run

tlmgr list --only-installed \
   | gawk '{gsub(/:/, ""); print $2}' \
   > ~/Downloads/texlive.$(date +%Y-%m-%d).installed.txt

from the command line (which requires the GNU awk (homebrew) but you can
of course sed this) before the update and when done

tlmgr install $(cat ~/Downloads/texlive.$(date +%Y-%m-%d).installed.txt)

to make my additions survive.

After installation of LyX, I (re-)run Tool->Reconfigure which is
probably unnecessary.

I change the default PDF format in

Document->Settings->Formats->Output Format->Default Output Format

to

PDF (LuaTeX)

which results in a change in the document to something like

\default_output_format pdf5

and of course

perl -i -p -e 's/(\\default_output_format)\W*(\w*)\W*$/$1 pdf5\n/g'
*.lyx

or even

find ~/ -name '*.lyx' \
-exec perl -i -p -e 's/(\\default_output_format)\W*\w*\W*$/$1
pdf5\n/g' \ ';'

will do that for all files

As I like to use Skim for all PDFs on the Mac I just open one with

Command-I

and select

Open With
Skim

Change All...

and have to do nothing within LyX.

If you like to use Preview for some and Skim for LyX PDFs, select

LyX-> Preferences -> File Handling -> ~File Formats -> Viewer -> Custom

and add something like

open -a skim $$i

As far as SyncTeX is concerned

https://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/SyncTeX

is helpful, look for "displayline' which in my LyX is one of the pull
down options anyway.

I change in

Document->Settings->Formats->Synchronize with output

the pulldown to

\synctex=-1

which should be the default (but doesn't seem to be), save the LyX file,
preview (CMD-R) and it works.

In Skim in

Preferences->Sync->PDF-TeX Sync support:->Preset

I choose

LyX

and

Shift-Command-Mouseclick

works in reverse.

Jürgen,

to be honest ePub support is a killer feature (even for non-publishing
users like me) and hence I'd really would like to see it making it into
2.4.

Alpha/Beta doesn't matter to me as I can't make the switch (new file
structure?) until it is production ready (or 2.3.7 (?) can read 2.4
files), due to the nature of my day job.

Both my desktops (office/home) and both laptops (office/home) sync with
each other at least daily.

I just use the 'PDF Form' Module (which requires/loads hyperref) and the

Insert->Custom Insets

offers a number of choices such as

TextField.

Then you can put stuff like

width=9cm, charsize=9pt, bordercolor={0.94 0.97 1.0},
backgroundcolor={0.94 0.97 1.0}, name=company

That seems to work in any PDF Viewer, Preview and Skim on the Mac.

output. It took me a while to understand that they would only work
with acroread, which is not available in Linux since 2013 (I tried
Okular first). I was able to install this last version on my Linux

correctly, but the forms do not disappear when I check "unlimited".

I'm going to document the need for Acrobat DC in the lyx file, but I
would like to know if the forms disappear in that case. Is it the
case for any of you ? If not, I will ask on the users' list.

Hello Eberhard,

OK, but my concern was with the JS dynamic forms described in section 5 of the
PDF-Form.lyx manual of the examples directory.

Could you confirm that the forms display correctly in this section and
specifically that
  - if you select "unlimited" in the radio button combo box, the "From" and
"Until" fields disappear;
  - if you type in a A in the bottom field, you get a warning (the field id
dedicated to numbers).

You must have insdljs.sty installed (that is package acrotex).

lua-widow-control

Version: 1.0.0 2021-10-09

Summary description: Automatically remove widows and orphans from any
document

Announcement text:
--

Lua-widow-control is a Plain TeX/LaTeX/ConTeXt package that removes

widows and orphans without any user intervention. Using the power
of LuaTeX, it does so without stretching any glue or shortening any
pages. Instead, lua-widow-control automatically lengthens a
paragraph on a page where a widow or orphan would otherwise occur.

Unmodified TeX has very few ways of preventing widows and orphans.
In documents with figures, section headings, and equations, TeX can
stretch the vertical glue between items in order to prevent widows
and orphans, but many documents have no figures or headings. TeX
can also shorten the page by 1 line, but this will give each page a
different length which can make a document look uneven. The typical
solution is to strategically insert \looseness=1, but this requires
manual editing every time that the document is edited.
Lua-widow-control is essentially an automation of the \looseness
method: it uses Lua callbacks to find "stretchy" paragraphs, then it
lengthens them to remove widows and orphans.

Lua-widow-control is compatible with all LuaTeX-based formats. All
that is required is to load the package at the start of your
  document.

  To load:
- Plain LuaTeX: \input lua-widow-control

- LuaLaTeX: \usepackage{lua-widow-control}
- ConTeXt (LMTX): \usemodule[lua-widow-control]

I think, similar to microtype et al., this is only sensible as an
(opt- in) option. Total removal of widows and orphans (which also can
be achieved by tweaking TeX dimens) also has drawbacks. There is no
one- fits-all solution (otherwise it would be default in TeX itself).

Cross References in the Manuals/Help Files

2022-01-13 Thread Dr Eberhard Lisse

Hi,

I came across the reference in the UserGuide to Program Listings in the
Embedded Objects Manual, due to a recent thread, and noticed that that
reference is not a (Clickable) Cross Reference.

Would making all those references cross references be worth of a
request-for feature?

I realize the effort involved, as all those documents will need to
be(come) Child Documents, which might be a good idea anyway, because
then the whole manual can be printed as one.

And while considering it, would it be a good idea to ensure all of this
works as DocBook so it can become a Handbook on Kindle?

Perhaps with a little embellishment one could even publish this on
Amazon for a Euro or two and that way generate some funds for the
project.

Isn't there a difference in the number of supported formats? Both are
quite copious (https://imagemagick.org/script/formats.php#supported
vs. http://www.graphicsmagick.org/formats.html, I'm not sure there's
any noticeable difference for a LyX user.

Digging deeper into Photoshop's behaviour, it seems that the TIFF
portion is a low-quality preview of the actual content (by default,
using only one bit per pixel). Among the two images output by
ImageMagick (with a simple magick $$i.eps $$o.png), the preview is the
second file ($$o-1.png), while the expected one is the first
($$o-0.png).

As I understand, the standard behaviour with pdflatex is to go through
epstopdf, which internally uses GhostScript. It doesn't care about
the preview and only outputs the image that corresponds to
ImageMagick's $$o-0.png.

(However, I'm really unfamiliar with TeX and derivatives' code source,
so I could not really triple check this.)

eps is a vector image, png is a bitmap. so, this might not be a
desirable solution depending on what is to be achieved.

Also, the LaTeX output shows the eps just fine. So why doesn't LyX?

The bundled ImageMagick (7.0.10.43) takes roughly three seconds, but
produces a PDF with two pages: the first one is either perfect or
garbage, depending on the PDF reader (Acrobat doesn't like it, PDFium
doesn't care and just displays it); the second one is a low-quality
version of the image. (If I ask for a PNG, ImageMagick works fine,
except the output image is far from nice, all pixelated.)

magick undisplayable.eps undisplayable.pdf

The main reason I'm taking this to the dev mailing list is that
pdflatex doesn't have any problem with this file, while LyX does
without any useful information for the user. I believe some tool
fails when loading the image, it would be really nice to tell the user
what went wrong (and how they might solve the problem).

Re: cannot run lyx on MacOS 10.15 catalina

2022-04-08 Thread Dr Eberhard Lisse

After having been running the (then) current LyX on several different
Linux distributions for since the late 1990's I have been running it in
production (my medical practice) since 2005 on Mac Minis, iMacs, MacPro,
almost every MacBook <= 13 inch since, including a 2021 Air M1, using
the (then) current (Mac)BasicTeX and can not recall any (major) issues,
even though there may have been some :-)-O

I switched from Fink to Homebrew many years ago and have not looked
back.

Currently I even install the LyX and BasicTeX "casks" from Homebrew,
which this week led to the update to the 2022 version of the
(Mac)BasicTeX.

I only noticed when LyX would not compile a document (due to missing
(front) packages). However, my upgrade script writes down a file of all
installed TeX packages prior to the brew upgrade run, so I fired up the
tmlgr on the command line and all was back in order after a few minutes.

That said, from the Crash Log this appears to be a 2020 AirBook, so my
advice is:

Upgrade that sucker to Monterrey.

Move away from Fink and get Homebrew

Then trash

/Applications/LyX.app

and from a terminal window do something like

tlmgr list --only-installed | awk '{gsub(/:/, ""); print $2}' \
> $HOME/Downloads/tl.$(date +%F).txt
brew install --cask basictex lyx iterm2
perl -i -p -e \
s+\$SELFAUTOPARENT/+/usr/local/texlive/+' \
/usr/local/texlive/2022basic/texmf.cnf

In a window opened from /Applications/iTerm2.app enter

tlmgr install $(cat $HOME/Downloads/tl.$(date +%F).txt)

and ignore the error at the end (caused by some packages already
installed).

If you are bothered by the Security and Privacy squealing

sudo spctl --master-disable

Re: About upgrading to MacOS 13

2022-12-07 Thread Dr Eberhard Lisse

I run Ventura on and Intel and on a M1 box and had no problems
whatsoever. I keep Monterey on an iMac and a MacPro (which don't want
to be upgrade to Ventura).

I think the issue is that each major version number upgrade requires a
new installation of the XCode command line tools which seem to include
python3. (There is no 'python' per se any more)

The gatekeeper issues is easily fixed by

sudo spctl --master-disable

and if you don't want to do that you can still authorize it in the
System Preferences after the first rejection and it will in future then
run without issues.

There is another issue I’m aware of. On some systems the gatekeeper
keeps nagging and says the LyX binary is a suspicious one. Probably
it’s because of the bundle permissions, the certificate used for
signing or the security settings of users system.

What is the actual task that you want to do?

I have done a bit of templating and (been shown how to do) simple LUA

So depending on what you do, it could already be possible with "on-board

On the Mac GraphicsMagic is not available as default, but easily
installed with Homebrew (and I am sure MacPorts and similar ilk).

I have been using that for years.

Something like

ln -fs $(brew --prefix)/opt/graphicsmagick/bin/gm /usr/local/bin/convert

results in a 'convert' which does the work (as does 'gm convert'), is
version independent and work on both Intel and Silicon.

Re: 2.4.0~RC1 hangs on macOS

An alias is only evaluated by the shell, so you could always either

   ln -fs /opt/local/bin/python3 /usr/local/bin/python3
   ln -fs /opt/local/bin/python3 /usr/local/bin/python

and see if that works.

There is a way of setting environment variables like PATH with launchctl
so that Apps can find it but I don't know if that works for aliases.

And of course you can use the full path of python in the converters
