I think it is much simpler for newcomers. The only thing I am not sure
about is whether the release_id tag is stable with new versions.

installing LyX --- I think :)
Compile the .nsi script with
$ path to\makensis lyx_installer.nsi
I've shoved the resulting executable onto the web at
http://www.devel.lyx.org/~leeming/software_probe.exe
It's 55kB in size.
