True. I'm on 1.6.x (2.0 requires multiple library upgrades on my Linux systems,
so it's awaiting my next major Linux upgrade). Sean apparently is on 2.0,
though, so it would seem easier for him to bind the new LFUNs.

Try binding the following to a key combo of your choice:
"command-sequence ert-insert; self-insert \textsubscript{; char-forward;
ert-insert; self-insert }; char-backward; char-backward;"

Compose-c-o should work?

using 1.1.6fix4
C-m works fine for mathmode, but when I type the copyright in (is there an
easier way besides typing the word copyright?), the sign appears
superscripted but should be much smaller. I am using this in an article
heading.

I am using LyX 1.1.6fix4 and Alt/Meta-M+"^" gives me unknown sequence:
Alt-M-asciicircum
Entering Mathmod by clic

Type C-m to enter mathed, than use '_' for subscripts and '^' for

Use math mode (Meta-M or Alt-M) and then ^ (superscript) or _ (subscript).
Press then again Meta-M which enters math-text-mode and allows you type
non-italic sub/superscripts.
