The output results for my Lyx documents are pale and not sharp I am not sure
what would be the proper terms to describe the problem. But as an example I
exported an open office document to a pdf. and the output looked different
from the the output I get from lyx exporting pdflatex.
Roman. Or, try experimenting with other fonts in that list. For
example,
my preferred choice is Palatino.

d (what you call "pale"), choose
"Latin
Modern Roman". Or, try experimenting with other fonts in that list. For
example,
my preferred choice is "Palatino".
