To change the algorithm header put
\floatname{algorithm}{What you want}
in the preamble this will change what it looks like (but probably not
when looking at lyx)
when you want to insert a list of algorithm in ERT put
\listof{algorithm}{List of What you want}
there is probably one
Suddently half the time I exit LyX it gives me an error "cannot delete
temporary directory" with a buffer file in it and it says "Permission

I am using kontour for vector graphics. The produced figures have too much
white space. I am trying to get rid of it by using ps2eps. However, the new
figure looses some of its content (at the borders). Its showing up after
including the file into a lyx file (float: figure). I am using Lyx
