  really tried to find some docs related to this class specifically,

  couldn?t find anything really specific to it. I am facing some probs 
in
  documenting using the above-mentioned class:
 
   There was some documentation related with linuxdoc generation in the
 Extended Guide, I think. It should be there.

 There is some documentation but it hardly explains about the use of
 document class 'SGML (LinuxDoc manpage)' . It more or less describes 
about
 document class 'SGML (LinuxDoc article)' .

  The only thing that is special to the manpage as compared to article is
that you pass in the Document options:
title=MyTitle sectnum=Mysecnum
  All the rest should be the same.
  I can add a subsection just saying that, for the several reason I always
applied my time elsewhere. :-)
Well I think if its playing some role in formatting ( or some other thing ) 
of this doc class, then it should have been mentioned ( my views) .

Also, now you have many formats that you find in document class 'SGML 
(LinuxDoc article)'  rather than in document class 'SGML (LinuxDoc 
manpage)'.
e.g. Title / Author /SubSection /SubSubsection / paragraph / Date and 
Abstract.

Okay , one more thing , if I am correct we are not allowed to use TOC in 
document classes 'SGML (LinuxDoc article)'  and 'SGML (LinuxDoc manpage)'. 
Wanted to clarify this.

  1.	I am able to generate sgml (i.e. LinuxDoc)/ html / txt format from
  the myFile.lyx ( a document that I created in the mentioned
 documentclass)
  using the lyx tool. But am not able to create pdf page from the same
  directly.
 
   Do you have pdflatex installed? I am asking this as linuxdoc can 
export
 html and from there use pdflatex.
 
   What tools are using to convert from linuxdoc?
   sgmltools? linuxdoctools?
 

 Yes, I have pdflatex installed. I tried sgmltools, and linuxdoc also. 
Now
 at times they work or at times they dont.

 Okay , I had prepared one document which is roughly 50 pages long. Now 
If I
 try to get a pdf document for this one I get some output but only 4

 is what I get. Also the output is completely distorted.
 Whereas when I tried only for a page, then I got no output!!
 Dont you think I should have got the correct output if I directly

 to pdf / dvi format, as I get in txt / html format ?

  Yes, I do. Just a small tutorial over the way as lyx works.
  The most used backend is latex. This means that lyx exports the document
to latex and then relies in external tools to convert that code to the 
final
format you want it to.

  The same applies to linuxdoc and to docbook. LyX exports the document in
each of this format and then uses other tools to convert them to the format
you want to.
  The only exception to this scheme is the text export that is done in an
heuristic way. (This means lots of hardwired code)
  The problems you experiencing are due to faulty linuxdoc tools, unless 
you
show me an example where lyx is producing ilegal linuxdoc code. What is
something on the line of: unless I'm convinced otherwise it is the tools
fault. ;-) I have seen so many example through the years. :-(

by lyx, for converting to pdf format, is faulty on my system. Since I am 
getting the .sgml files when I convert to pdf then  I face a problem ( as of 
now I dont know if the sgml file is in correct format ). But I would like to 
mention that when I am using simply documentclass 'book' , then things work 
out perfectly i.e. I get the pdf format of the given file ( hope I didnt 
miss out something ).

Well in any case , which tool would you recommend that I should use to 
convert .sgml file? I got this .sgml from converting the .lyx doc of 
document class 'SGML (LinuxDoc manpage)' ( I exported it to LinuxDoc). I 
would like to try this out first.

AMSBOOK in french

Hello,
I am playing around with the AMSBOOK class under Lyx, and have selected 
French as the document language. All the main entries (title, 
part,section, chapter..) are properly translated, but not some 
AMS-specific items such as exercise and example (which should appear 
as exercice and exemple in French).

Does anybody know where this translation is managed (babel...) ? I think 
it should be possible to add some lines in a config file, but I am no 
lyx/latex guru :-)

Any help appreciated.

Mac-LyX is slow

Hi all,
this mail concerns the different LyX's for Mac.
I'm writing my thesis in LyX on my 1GHz Powerbook G4 (1GB of memory), 
and have reached about 120 pages so far. The thesis is about 
computational linguistics, meaning that I have some mathematical 
formulae (say 5 per page or so), but most of them are quite simple. I 
consider myself not an expert, but quite advanced user of both LaTeX 
and LyX; but my expertise in unix/X11 is not equally good... I'm using 
LyX version 1.3.4.

So, now to my problems/questions:
1) The native LyX/Mac port has become terribly slow -- it takes several 
seconds just to open a math-macro (with arguments), and writing inside 
a math formula can be as slow as 1 character per second. Editing the 
main text is also slow, but not that much.

2) So I tried both LyX/Qt and LyX/Xforms, installing via fink. LyX/Qt 
is much faster, and LyX/Xforms is lightning fast!

Q: Why the extreme differences? Is there any way to make LyX/Mac faster 
(it has the best interface, so I'd want to use it)

But now I encounter other problems:
3) The truetype screen fonts look bad -- antialiasing seems not to be 
working. This is true for both Qt and Xforms. Now I'm using the Xforms 
interface with bitmap fonts -- it's fast and looks, well, it's readable 
at least...

Q: Can I turn on antialiasing?
4) I also have some kind of X11 problem. The apple cmd key functions as 
LyX meta, as it does with e.g. X11/emacs. (I have unchecked Follow 
system keyboard layout and Enable key equivalents under X11 in X11 
preferences). BUT: sometimes, I have not figured out when, LyX forgets 
that cmd/meta exists -- i.e. pressing cmd-q a gives me qa, and not 
greek alpha.

Q: Has anyone got any idea for this problem?
Finally, I would really like to use the native LyX/Mac port, and hope 
that the speed will be improved soon.

subjects, and found none listed for LyX.  For LaTeX, however, Amazon.com
shows a list of several books available.

Do you have a recommendation for a first book on LaTeX?

I don't see your point. One is already able to change the preferred font size 
in the editor, which is btw a great thing. An option to narrow the width of 
the document inside the editor would not alter this behavior. 

 screen resolution

To change the screen resolution doesn't make any difference because my problem 
is not the size or resolution of the fonts but the line width! I zoom the 
font to 150% and have a resolution of 1024x768 or so. However, if one 
maximize the window you have to read along the entire screen width which is 
like reading your A4 papers landscape. There is a reason why people use 
portrait instead of landscape: it's more readable. O.k., I could zoom the 
fonts to 300% but then I would loose the overview.

  No, you can not, agains this impose by linuxdoc not lyx. I know that then
LyX should not allow the user to place, it is bug but not easy to fix, and
again such a small one that I don't intend to fix it.

part not to the content. How many times to you place TOC in another place
different from the usual?

Here:
/usr/local/TeX/texmf/tex/generic/babel/frenchb.cfg
is the right place

With TeXLive, tar copy to 
/usr/local/TeX/texmf-local/tex/generic/babel/frenchb.cfg
and edit there.
Then run 
texhash
(local changes will be preserved unpon dist. upgrade).

Check with 
kpsewhich -format=cfg frenchb.cfg

(pspell was apparently not needed anymore since this version).
I did not understand that pspell lib was still needed...
Shifted back to ispell, but French dictionaries do not include rules
about elisions, very frequent in French. 

The configure option will still be nneded w/1.3.5, right ?

Right.

13x$ ./configure --help | grep spell
  --with-pspell   use PSpell libraries
  --with-pspell-include   where the pspell.h is located
  --with-pspell-lib   where the libpspell.a is located

I guess that whoever fixed the 14x configure script to handle the 
newer versions of aspell didn't backport the fix to the 1.3.x series.

I see this in the 1.4.x version of configure.ac:

### Check if we want spell libraries, prefer new aspell
CHECK_WITH_ASPELL
if test $USING_ASPELL != yes; then
CHECK_WITH_PSPELL
fi

Which compares to this in the 1.3.x config/configure.ac:

Unfortunately, there's quite a lot of aspell-specific code in the 
1.4.x tree, so I guess that backporting it was too much work.

  There used to be a few introductions and tutorials available on the Web; I
don't know if they are still there.
  Several years ago I read almost all the main books on LaTeX. The two that
I have left are LaTeX for Linux by Beatrice Sachs Lipkin and The LaTeX
Companion, 2nd Edition by Mittlebach and Goossens. I recommend them both.
  Lipkin's book is a very good introduction that puts things in context.
TLC2 is a fantastic reference for the details of how to do almost anything.
  To supplement these, I suggest that you read the LyX Tutorial and
familiarize yourself with the Users Guide and Advanced Features texts. Then
start using LyX to write. The most effective way to learn is to bump against
a problem and learn how to solve it by looking in the help documents, the
books you have on your desk, then asking for help from the group here.
Reading Lipkin's book from start to finish will give you a good overview but
you'll probably forget almost all the details. Working with the application
will be more effective because the new knowledge will be in the context of
what you're writing so you are more likely to remember it.

Sure, if the only thing I do with my computer is to use LyX, I would organize 
my desktop in a way you've described. 

To maximize a window or even to zoom it to full screen size is a common method 
in order to focus on the things that happen inside the application.

Common perhaps - but still _wrong_.  Maximizing is for the
occations when you want a big window, because you need
the space. 

It may also be a convenient way to lock out other windows,
but only as long as there is no downsides to the wide window.
Lyx doesn't work that well wide, so considering other ways
of locking out the rest of the desktop _is_ a good idea.  Because
you can do that today, it will take long time to get this into lyx,
if it ever happens at all.
Of course the solid-color desktop isn't that interesting, but
there are better ways:
Most window managers supports virtual desktops, so you
can put your lyx in an otherwise empty desktop.  Problem solved,
because all the other desktop stuff stays in another virtual desktop.
If you can't do this - cover the rest of the desktop with some
other window, such as a image viewer with solid color.  It
will obscure all the other clutter on the desktop, and is easy
to get rid of later by closing it.
That's 
why it seems to be appropriate to expect that an editor is able to handle all 
window sizes in a reasonable manner. A width option could solve this 
problem. It would be great if LyX supports such a feature. Just a suggestion.
 

Nothing wrong with a suggestion. :-)  I merely see this as a wrong
solution, the purpose of maximize is to get as much space as
possible - not to block other stuff.  The blocking is just a side effect
achievable in other ways.  Adding an option might seem like a small thing,
but getting lots and lots of such options eventually results in a big
bloated program like msword.  Lyx is currently such a nice small thing. :-)

always recommend is Kopka  Daly's A Guide to LaTeX (now in 4th ed.).

Each has a different style and approach to the subject. Each of us responds
differently to these styles and approaches so one should always look through
a few before deciding on what is best.

The next version of LyX/Mac will be compiled with an updated (and 
somewhat faster) version of Qt. Hopefully performance will be 
acceptable for you.

I believe X11 has antialiasing on by default. LyX/Mac should be

I haven't experienced this problem with other X11 programs, but it's 
been a very long time since I tried LyX on X11. Perhaps we could be 
more helpful if you could figure out a pattern to the problem. (Do 
these problems occur for other programs run under X11 in those cases?

  The problem is the step linuxdoc - latex, the linuxdoc-tools fails there.

  I don't know. :-(

  I searched in the internet for the linuxdoc-tools, that pages does not
exists, its maintainer is a debian developer and he doesn't update the
debian package for more than 2 years.
  There are also other problems that I am aware with that package, but I
don't have the time/will to take over the package and fix the bugs.

  The bugs are easy to fix, but there is no much use for linuxdoc-tools now.

I usually use a separate desktop to focus on the writing. On this desktop,
I place a LyX window and a DVI-window side by side, both showing the same
document. This works nicely for me anyway.

PS. It also helps if you can get your window manager to open the windows 
at the right place when the programs are started.

  As an example for portuguese I have been adding this to the preamble for
theorems and coroloaries:

\newtheorem{theorem}{Teorema}
\newtheorem{corolary}{Corolário}
\let\thm\theorem
\let\cor\corolary

  lyx defines them in english as:

\theoremstyle{plain}
\newtheorem{thm}{Theorem}
\theoremstyle{plain}
\newtheorem{cor}{Corollary}

  Probably Herbert will prove this is wrong, and a better way exists. :-)

lyx menu too big

Hi people.
I just finish to compile lyx 1.3.4 with qt 3.3.3 and I have a ugly
result (see picture at http://w3.uqo.ca/nysa01/Capture.png)
The text for the menu (File, Edit, ...) are too big, and dialog screen
too (preferences window do not fit on the screen), watch also the drop
down menu.
Is there any way to correct this?

No.

I'd agree that LyX's table format sucks, but the data is there in your html
file. Why not just extract it?

Attached is a python script that does it for you.

I have downloaded the snapshot and managed to build it but the document 
classes in Layout - Document shows Unavailable: article, Unavailable 
book,... and when trying to open any file I have the message:
Textclass error
The document uses a missing Tex class article. LyX will not be able to 
produce output.

I have two LyX installations: a 1.3.3 in /usr/bin installed from an rpm 
whereas the one I built is in /usr/local/bin. The first works great but the 
one I built faces this problem.


I tried:

  Yes, I do. Just a small tutorial over the way as lyx works.
  The most used backend is latex. This means that lyx exports the document
to latex and then relies in external tools to convert that code to the 
final
format you want it to.

  The same applies to linuxdoc and to docbook. LyX exports the document in
each of this format and then uses other tools to convert them to the format
you want to.
  The only exception to this scheme is the text export that is done in an
heuristic way. (This means lots of hardwired code)
  The problems you experiencing are due to faulty linuxdoc tools, unless 
you
show me an example where lyx is producing ilegal linuxdoc code. What is
something on the line of: unless I'm convinced otherwise it is the tools
fault. ;-) I have seen so many example through the years. :-(

Mac-LyX is slow

Hi all,
this mail concerns the different LyX's for Mac.
I'm writing my thesis in LyX on my 1GHz Powerbook G4 (1GB of memory), 
and have reached about 120 pages so far. The thesis is about 
computational linguistics, meaning that I have some mathematical 
formulae (say 5 per page or so), but most of them are quite simple. I 
consider myself not an expert, but quite advanced user of both LaTeX 
and LyX; but my expertise in unix/X11 is not equally good... I'm using 
LyX version 1.3.4.

So, now to my problems/questions:
1) The native LyX/Mac port has become terribly slow -- it takes several 
seconds just to open a math-macro (with arguments), and writing inside 
a math formula can be as slow as 1 character per second. Editing the 
main text is also slow, but not that much.

2) So I tried both LyX/Qt and LyX/Xforms, installing via fink. LyX/Qt 
is much faster, and LyX/Xforms is lightning fast!

Q: Why the extreme differences? Is there any way to make LyX/Mac faster 
(it has the best interface, so I'd want to use it)

But now I encounter other problems:
3) The truetype screen fonts look bad -- antialiasing seems not to be 
working. This is true for both Qt and Xforms. Now I'm using the Xforms 
interface with bitmap fonts -- it's fast and looks, well, it's readable 
at least...

Q: Can I turn on antialiasing?
4) I also have some kind of X11 problem. The apple cmd key functions as 
LyX meta, as it does with e.g. X11/emacs. (I have unchecked Follow 
system keyboard layout and Enable key equivalents under X11 in X11 
preferences). BUT: sometimes, I have not figured out when, LyX forgets 
that cmd/meta exists -- i.e. pressing cmd-q a gives me qa, and not 
greek alpha.

Q: Has anyone got any idea for this problem?
Finally, I would really like to use the native LyX/Mac port, and hope 
that the speed will be improved soon.

I don't see your point. One is already able to change the preferred font size 
in the editor, which is btw a great thing. An option to narrow the width of 
the document inside the editor would not alter this behavior. 

 screen resolution

To change the screen resolution doesn't make any difference because my problem 
is not the size or resolution of the fonts but the line width! I zoom the 
font to 150% and have a resolution of 1024x768 or so. However, if one 
maximize the window you have to read along the entire screen width which is 
like reading your A4 papers landscape. There is a reason why people use 
portrait instead of landscape: it's more readable. O.k., I could zoom the 
fonts to 300% but then I would loose the overview.

  But my priority is not linuxdoc, linuxdoc is a dead end. It works well for
simple things. The problem was that it started as a hack and took much time
to get right. Later was decided that instead of reinventing the wheel
everytime the best thing would be to move to a more standard project, docbook.

Hello,

I am playing around with the AMSBOOK class under Lyx, and have selected 
French as the document language. All the main entries (title, 
part,section, chapter..) are properly translated, but not some 
AMS-specific items such as exercise and example (which should appear 
as exercice and exemple in French).

Does anybody know where this translation is managed (babel...) ? I think 
it should be possible to add some lines in a config file, but I am no 
lyx/latex guru :-)

Here:
/usr/local/TeX/texmf/tex/generic/babel/frenchb.cfg
is the right place

With TeXLive, tar copy to 
/usr/local/TeX/texmf-local/tex/generic/babel/frenchb.cfg
and edit there.
Then run 
texhash
(local changes will be preserved unpon dist. upgrade).

Check with 
kpsewhich -format=cfg frenchb.cfg

simple things. The problem was that it started as a hack and took much time
to get right. Later was decided that instead of reinventing the wheel
everytime the best thing would be to move to a more standard project,

 If I got you correctly, you mean that the tool that is being presently

 by lyx, for converting to pdf format, is faulty on my system. Since I am
 getting the .sgml files when I convert to pdf then  I face a problem (

 like to mention that when I am using simply documentclass 'book' , then
 things work out perfectly i.e. I get the pdf format of the given file (
 hope I didnt miss out something ).

I cursed a lot aspell after upgrading to 0.50
(pspell was apparently not needed anymore since this version).
I did not understand that pspell lib was still needed...
Shifted back to ispell, but French dictionaries do not include rules
about elisions, very frequent in French. 

The configure option will still be nneded w/1.3.5, right ?

Right.

13x$ ./configure --help | grep spell
  --with-pspell   use PSpell libraries
  --with-pspell-include   where the pspell.h is located
  --with-pspell-lib   where the libpspell.a is located

I guess that whoever fixed the 14x configure script to handle the 
newer versions of aspell didn't backport the fix to the 1.3.x series.

I see this in the 1.4.x version of configure.ac:

### Check if we want spell libraries, prefer new aspell
CHECK_WITH_ASPELL
if test $USING_ASPELL != yes; then
CHECK_WITH_PSPELL
fi

Which compares to this in the 1.3.x config/configure.ac:

Unfortunately, there's quite a lot of aspell-specific code in the 
1.4.x tree, so I guess that backporting it was too much work.

  There used to be a few introductions and tutorials available on the Web; I
don't know if they are still there.
  Several years ago I read almost all the main books on LaTeX. The two that
I have left are LaTeX for Linux by Beatrice Sachs Lipkin and The LaTeX
Companion, 2nd Edition by Mittlebach and Goossens. I recommend them both.
  Lipkin's book is a very good introduction that puts things in context.
TLC2 is a fantastic reference for the details of how to do almost anything.
  To supplement these, I suggest that you read the LyX Tutorial and
familiarize yourself with the Users Guide and Advanced Features texts. Then
start using LyX to write. The most effective way to learn is to bump against
a problem and learn how to solve it by looking in the help documents, the
books you have on your desk, then asking for help from the group here.
Reading Lipkin's book from start to finish will give you a good overview but
you'll probably forget almost all the details. Working with the application
will be more effective because the new knowledge will be in the context of
what you're writing so you are more likely to remember it.

Sure, if the only thing I do with my computer is to use LyX, I would organize 
my desktop in a way you've described. 

To maximize a window or even to zoom it to full screen size is a common method 
in order to focus on the things that happen inside the application.

Common perhaps - but still _wrong_.  Maximizing is for the
occations when you want a big window, because you need
the space. 

It may also be a convenient way to lock out other windows,
but only as long as there is no downsides to the wide window.
Lyx doesn't work that well wide, so considering other ways
of locking out the rest of the desktop _is_ a good idea.  Because
you can do that today, it will take long time to get this into lyx,
if it ever happens at all.
Of course the solid-color desktop isn't that interesting, but
there are better ways:
Most window managers supports virtual desktops, so you
can put your lyx in an otherwise empty desktop.  Problem solved,
because all the other desktop stuff stays in another virtual desktop.
If you can't do this - cover the rest of the desktop with some
other window, such as a image viewer with solid color.  It
will obscure all the other clutter on the desktop, and is easy
to get rid of later by closing it.
That's 
why it seems to be appropriate to expect that an editor is able to handle all 
window sizes in a reasonable manner. A width option could solve this 
problem. It would be great if LyX supports such a feature. Just a suggestion.
 

Nothing wrong with a suggestion. :-)  I merely see this as a wrong
solution, the purpose of maximize is to get as much space as
possible - not to block other stuff.  The blocking is just a side effect
achievable in other ways.  Adding an option might seem like a small thing,
but getting lots and lots of such options eventually results in a big
bloated program like msword.  Lyx is currently such a nice small thing. :-)

I don't know about TLC 2dn-ed (probably is very good), but the book which I
always recommend is Kopka  Daly's A Guide to LaTeX (now in 4th ed.).

Each has a different style and approach to the subject. Each of us responds
differently to these styles and approaches so one should always look through
a few before deciding on what is best.

interface with bitmap fonts -- it's fast and looks, well, it's

I believe X11 has antialiasing on by default. LyX/Mac should be 
antialiased as well.

4) I also have some kind of X11 problem. The apple cmd key functions 
as LyX meta, as it does with e.g. X11/emacs. (I have unchecked Follow 
system keyboard layout and Enable key equivalents under X11 in X11 
preferences). BUT: sometimes, I have not figured out when, LyX forgets 
that cmd/meta exists -- i.e. pressing cmd-q a gives me qa, and not 
greek alpha.

Q: Has anyone got any idea for this problem?
I haven't experienced this problem with other X11 programs, but it's 
been a very long time since I tried LyX on X11. Perhaps we could be 
more helpful if you could figure out a pattern to the problem. (Do 
these problems occur for other programs run under X11 in those cases?

I usually use a separate desktop to focus on the writing. On this desktop,
I place a LyX window and a DVI-window side by side, both showing the same
document. This works nicely for me anyway.

at the right place when the programs are started.

  As an example for portuguese I have been adding this to the preamble for
theorems and coroloaries:

\newtheorem{theorem}{Teorema}
\newtheorem{corolary}{Corolário}
\let\thm\theorem
\let\cor\corolary

  lyx defines them in english as:

\theoremstyle{plain}
\newtheorem{thm}{Theorem}
\theoremstyle{plain}
\newtheorem{cor}{Corollary}

  Probably Herbert will prove this is wrong, and a better way exists. :-)

lyx menu too big

Hi people.
I just finish to compile lyx 1.3.4 with qt 3.3.3 and I have a ugly
result (see picture at http://w3.uqo.ca/nysa01/Capture.png)
The text for the menu (File, Edit, ...) are too big, and dialog screen
too (preferences window do not fit on the screen), watch also the drop
down menu.
Is there any way to correct this?

or rows they may have.

Is there any way in lyx to have tables without defining how many rows or
columns ahead of time?

Maybe I should use latex table or tabular?

how many rows or items.

Anyone have any example of doing this?

table.

No.

I'd agree that LyX's table format sucks, but the data is there in your html
file. Why not just extract it?

I have downloaded the snapshot and managed to build it but the document 
classes in Layout - Document shows Unavailable: article, Unavailable 
book,... and when trying to open any file I have the message:
Textclass error
The document uses a missing Tex class article. LyX will not be able to 
produce output.

I have two LyX installations: a 1.3.3 in /usr/bin installed from an rpm 
whereas the one I built is in /usr/local/bin. The first works great but the 
one I built faces this problem.


I tried:
$ /usr/local/bin/lyx -userdir .lyx -sysdir /usr/share/lyx/
LyX: Bad boolean `amsart-seq'. Use false or true [around line 6 of 
file /usr/share/lyx/textclass.lst]

  The only thing that is special to the manpage as compared to article is
that you pass in the Document options:
title="MyTitle" sectnum="Mysecnum"
  All the rest should be the same.
  I can add a subsection just saying that, for the several reason I always
applied my time elsewhere. :-)

of this doc class, then it should have been mentioned ( my views) .

Also, now you have many formats that you find in document class 'SGML 
(LinuxDoc article)'  rather than in document class 'SGML (LinuxDoc 
manpage)'.
e.g. Title / Author /SubSection /SubSubsection / paragraph / Date and 
Abstract.

Okay , one more thing , if I am correct we are not allowed to use TOC in 
document classes 'SGML (LinuxDoc article)'  and 'SGML (LinuxDoc manpage)'.

  Yes, I do. Just a small tutorial over the way as lyx works.
  The most used backend is latex. This means that lyx exports the document
to latex and then relies in external tools to convert that code to the 
final
format you want it to.

  The same applies to linuxdoc and to docbook. LyX exports the document in
each of this format and then uses other tools to convert them to the format
you want to.
  The only exception to this scheme is the text export that is done in an
heuristic way. (This means lots of hardwired code)
  The problems you experiencing are due to faulty linuxdoc tools, unless 
you
show me an example where lyx is producing ilegal linuxdoc code. What is
something on the line of: unless I'm convinced otherwise it is the tools
fault. ;-) I have seen so many example through the years. :-(

by lyx, for converting to pdf format, is faulty on my system. Since I am 
getting the .sgml files when I convert to pdf then  I face a problem ( as of 
now I dont know if the sgml file is in correct format ). But I would like to

out perfectly i.e. I get the pdf format of the given file ( hope I didnt 
miss out something ).

AMSBOOK in french

Hello,
I am playing around with the AMSBOOK class under Lyx, and have selected 
"French" as the document language. All the main entries (title, 
part,section, chapter..) are properly translated, but not some 
AMS-specific items such as "exercise" and "example" (which should appear 
as "exercice" and "exemple" in French).

Does anybody know where this translation is managed (babel...) ? I think 
it should be possible to add some lines in a config file, but I am no 
lyx/latex guru :-)

Any help appreciated.

Mac-LyX is slow

Hi all,
this mail concerns the different LyX's for Mac.
I'm writing my thesis in LyX on my 1GHz Powerbook G4 (1GB of memory), 
and have reached about 120 pages so far. The thesis is about 
computational linguistics, meaning that I have some mathematical 
formulae (say 5 per page or so), but most of them are quite simple. I 
consider myself not an expert, but quite advanced user of both LaTeX 
and LyX; but my expertise in unix/X11 is not equally good... I'm using 
LyX version 1.3.4.

So, now to my problems/questions:
1) The native LyX/Mac port has become terribly slow -- it takes several 
seconds just to open a math-macro (with arguments), and writing inside 
a math formula can be as slow as 1 character per second. Editing the 
main text is also slow, but not that much.

2) So I tried both LyX/Qt and LyX/Xforms, installing via fink. LyX/Qt 
is much faster, and LyX/Xforms is lightning fast!

Q: Why the extreme differences? Is there any way to make LyX/Mac faster 
(it has the best interface, so I'd want to use it)

But now I encounter other problems:
3) The truetype screen fonts look bad -- antialiasing seems not to be 
working. This is true for both Qt and Xforms. Now I'm using the Xforms 
interface with bitmap fonts -- it's fast and looks, well, it's readable 
at least...

Q: Can I turn on antialiasing?
4) I also have some kind of X11 problem. The apple cmd key functions as 
LyX meta, as it does with e.g. X11/emacs. (I have unchecked "Follow 
system keyboard layout" and "Enable key equivalents under X11" in X11 
preferences). BUT: sometimes, I have not figured out when, LyX forgets 
that cmd/meta exists -- i.e. pressing "cmd-q a" gives me "qa", and not 
greek alpha.

Q: Has anyone got any idea for this problem?
Finally, I would really like to use the native LyX/Mac port, and hope 
that the speed will be improved soon.

I don't see your point. One is already able to change the preferred font size 
in the editor, which is btw a great thing. An option to narrow the width of 
the document inside the editor would not alter this behavior.

To change the screen resolution doesn't make any difference because my problem 
is not the size or resolution of the fonts but the line width! I zoom the 
font to 150% and have a resolution of 1024x768 or so. However, if one 
maximize the window you have to read along the entire screen width which is 
like reading your A4 papers landscape. There is a reason why people use 
portrait instead of landscape: it's more readable. O.k., I could zoom the 
fonts to 300% but then I would loose the overview.

everytime the best thing would be to move to a more standard project, docbook.

  This is by linuxdoc design, not LyX, those are the only available layouts

  No, you can not, agains this impose by linuxdoc not lyx. I know that then
LyX should not allow the user to place, it is bug but not easy to fix, and
again such a small one that I don't intend to fix it.

  IMO the toc, as well as the lof, placement belongs to the transformation
part not to the content. How many times to you place TOC in another place
different from the usual?

Here:
/usr/local/TeX/texmf/tex/generic/babel/frenchb.cfg
is the right place

With TeXLive, tar copy to 
/usr/local/TeX/texmf-local/tex/generic/babel/frenchb.cfg
and edit there.
Then run 
texhash
(local changes will be preserved unpon dist. upgrade).

Check with 
kpsewhich -format=cfg frenchb.cfg

Exactly, but why is it that I get the pdf while using "LaTex (book)" 
document class , since only one tool is extra i.e. linuxdoc ? Rest of the 
three two conversion tools are common i.e. when converting to latex and pdf 
).

Which tool ( and version ) should I install on my system ? Since I am 
getting a linuxdoc (.sgml) file format.

I cursed a lot aspell after upgrading to 0.50
(pspell was apparently not needed anymore since this version).
I did not understand that pspell lib was still needed...
Shifted back to ispell, but French dictionaries do not include rules
about elisions, very frequent in French. 

The configure option will still be nneded w/1.3.5, right ?

Right.

13x$ ./configure --help | grep spell
  --with-pspell   use PSpell libraries
  --with-pspell-include   where the pspell.h is located
  --with-pspell-lib   where the libpspell.a is located

I guess that whoever fixed the 14x configure script to handle the 
newer versions of aspell didn't backport the fix to the 1.3.x series.

I see this in the 1.4.x version of configure.ac:

CHECK_WITH_ASPELL

Which compares to this in the 1.3.x config/configure.ac:

  There used to be a few introductions and tutorials available on the Web; I
don't know if they are still there.
  Several years ago I read almost all the main books on LaTeX. The two that
I have left are "LaTeX for Linux" by Beatrice Sachs Lipkin and "The LaTeX
Companion, 2nd Edition" by Mittlebach and Goossens. I recommend them both.
  Lipkin's book is a very good introduction that puts things in context.
TLC2 is a fantastic reference for the details of how to do almost anything.
  To supplement these, I suggest that you read the LyX Tutorial and
familiarize yourself with the Users Guide and Advanced Features texts. Then
start using LyX to write. The most effective way to learn is to bump against
a problem and learn how to solve it by looking in the help documents, the
books you have on your desk, then asking for help from the group here.
Reading Lipkin's book from start to finish will give you a good overview but
you'll probably forget almost all the details. Working with the application
will be more effective because the new knowledge will be in the context of
what you're writing so you are more likely to remember it.

Sure, if the only thing I do with my computer is to use LyX, I would organize 
my desktop in a way you've described. 

To maximize a window or even to zoom it to full screen size is a common method 
in order to focus on the things that happen inside the application.

Common perhaps - but still _wrong_.  Maximizing is for the
occations when you want a big window, because you need
the space. 

It may also be a convenient way to lock out other windows,
but only as long as there is no downsides to the wide window.
Lyx doesn't work that well "wide", so considering other ways
of locking out the rest of the desktop _is_ a good idea.  Because
you can do that today, it will take long time to get this into lyx,
if it ever happens at all.
Of course the solid-color desktop isn't that interesting, but
there are better ways:
Most window managers supports "virtual desktops", so you
can put your lyx in an otherwise empty desktop.  Problem solved,
because all the other desktop stuff stays in another virtual desktop.
If you can't do this - cover the rest of the desktop with some
other window, such as a image viewer with solid color.  It
will obscure all the other "clutter" on the desktop, and is easy
to get rid of later by closing it.
That's 
why it seems to be appropriate to expect that an editor is able to handle all 
window sizes in a reasonable manner. A "width option" could solve this 
problem. It would be great if LyX supports such a feature. Just a suggestion.
 

Nothing wrong with a suggestion. :-)  I merely see this as a wrong
solution, the purpose of "maximize" is to get as much space as
possible - not to block other stuff.  The blocking is just a side effect
achievable in other ways.  Adding an option might seem like a small thing,
but getting lots and lots of such options eventually results in a big
bloated program like msword.  Lyx is currently such a nice small thing. :-)

I don't know about TLC 2dn-ed (probably is very good), but the book which I
always recommend is Kopka & Daly's A Guide to LaTeX (now in 4th ed.).

Each has a different style and approach to the subject. Each of us responds

The next version of LyX/Mac will be compiled with an updated (and 
somewhat faster) version of Qt. Hopefully performance will be 
acceptable for you.

Q: Has anyone got any idea for this problem?
I haven't experienced this problem with other X11 programs, but it's 
been a very long time since I tried LyX on X11. Perhaps we could be 
more helpful if you could figure out a pattern to the problem. (Do 
these problems occur for other programs run under X11 in those cases?

  The problem is the step linuxdoc -> latex, the linuxdoc-tools fails there.

  I don't know. :-(

  I searched in the internet for the linuxdoc-tools, that pages does not
exists, its maintainer is a debian developer and he doesn't update the
debian package for more than 2 years.
  There are also other problems that I am aware with that package, but I
don't have the time/will to take over the package and fix the bugs.

  The bugs are easy to fix, but there is no much use for linuxdoc-tools now.

I usually use a separate desktop to focus on the writing. On this desktop,
I place a LyX window and a DVI-window side by side, both showing the same
document. This works nicely for me anyway.

PS. It also helps if you can get your window manager to open the windows 
at the right place when the programs are started.

  As an example for portuguese I have been adding this to the preamble for
theorems and coroloaries:

\newtheorem{theorem}{Teorema}
\newtheorem{corolary}{Corolário}
\let\thm\theorem
\let\cor\corolary

  lyx defines them in english as:

\theoremstyle{plain}
\newtheorem{thm}{Theorem}
\theoremstyle{plain}
\newtheorem{cor}{Corollary}

  Probably Herbert will prove this is wrong, and a better way exists. :-)

lyx menu too big

Hi people.
I just finish to compile lyx 1.3.4 with qt 3.3.3 and I have a ugly
result (see picture at http://w3.uqo.ca/nysa01/Capture.png)
The text for the menu (File, Edit, ...) are too big, and dialog screen
too (preferences window do not fit on the screen), watch also the drop
down menu.
Is there any way to correct this?

Is there any way in lyx to have tables without defining how many rows or
columns ahead of time?

Maybe I should use latex table or tabular?

I have some XML documents that I am converting to Lyx and it is going
well, but now I am trying to figure out the tables part.

I have table, row, item, table heading, but no references ahead of time of
how many rows or items.

Anyone have any example of doing this?

  I see two:
- make a script (in python ;-) to convert the tables specifically
- convert the table to latex and use tex2lyx to convert the resulting
table.

  I have done most of the work of converting previous file format of lyx to
the latest for tables. And it was reasonably easy using python. I'm serious.

No.

I'd agree that LyX's table format sucks, but the data is there in your html
file. Why not just extract it?

Attached is a python script that does it for you.
