problem with pdfpages-solved

2008-02-02 Thread Eli Brosh
The problem with pdfpages is now solved.
Everything works if I put the full filename for the files I attach.

Thank you all
especially to Eran Kaplinsky and Robert Orr.

Re: User's Guide doesn't work

2008-02-02 Thread Tom Sisan
Thanks for the help Uwe, but I still am having problems.

About your suggestion - personally I think MiKTeX was installing
packages fine (it never complained and seemed to complete the process
whenever I clicked install package in the package manager). BUT it
never showed floatflt.sty in the MiKTeX package manager. Its NOT in
the package list. In my very uneducated opinion it seems like MiKTeX
has decided to remove floatflt.sty from there package list because its
so old. CTAN shows a date of 1998 on floatflt.sty, whereas the oldest
package in MiKTeX available in the MiKTeX package manager is from
2001. This is just a theory I have, could be totally wrong. :)

So I've tried a bunch of stuff since then:

1. uninstall both MiKTex and LyX and reinstall them (using miktex
basic installer and lyx standard installer). I encountered new
problems this time with the User's guide where the error message was
something about scrbook.class (this is from memory so I may not have
it exact). I found online help about this suggesting koma-scsript was
the problem. But now when I tried installing new packages they didn't
seeem to install, because after restarting lyx it would always try to
reinstall what it had tried to before.

2. Reinstalled them again using miktex network installer and lyx
alternative installer. I also ran miktex update this time (I don't
think I did that before). Now, I am back where I was originally.
- There is no package containing the file "floatflt.sty" available in miktex.
- lyx user's guide complains that the file floatflt.sty can't be found
and makes no attempt to install it (as before)
- the style file floatflt.sty is not shown in the list of styles under
Tools->Tex Information
-An example tex file that came with the floatflt package from CTAN can
be compiled into a pdf in LyX, but only after I edit the file
drastically leaving only a single "floated figure". It does have a
usepackage{floatflt} in it. It works in lyx, producing a figure with
text floated around it. I included the tex code below. I don't know
why this file works and the User's Guide does not.

Here is the highly modified file version of a file that came with
floatflt package on CTAN:

This is a demonstration document for the use
of the \textsf{floatflt} package. It contains several
floating figures and tables with captions explaining how
they were called. At the end, a
\verb+\listoffigures+ command
is used, resulting in the desired lists. For more
details on how to use the \textsf{floatflt} package,
please run \LaTeX{} on the file \texttt{floatflt.dtx}.

The following work by Edgar Alan Poe was retrieved by
anonymous ftp from \texttt{ftp.funet.fi} in the
directory \texttt{/pub/doc/literary/etext} where it is

\LaTeX\ adaptions have been done, besides the inclusion
of floating floats.

Yes, it was this! One of his eyes resembled that

to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself
of the eye for ever.

Hello
I am trying to include a pdf file in a LyX document.
I have the TeX-Live package installed in my computer. If I understand
correctly, it includes pdfpages.

I put the phrase "\usepackage{pdfpages}" in the LateX preamble for the
document.
Afterwards, I wrote in ERT: \includepdf[pages=1-11]{filename.pdf}
The filename.pdf is saved in the same folder as the LyX document.

Now, when I try to view the document as dvi, I get the error message:
Package pdfpages Error:You produce DVI output but pdf output
Undefined control sequence.
Missing $ inserted
Extra }, or forgotten $.
Missing $ inserted.

When I try to produce a pdf output, I get the error message:
LyX: Cannot view file
File does not exist:
/tmp/lyx_tmpdir21859Tr9iSI/lyx_tmpbuf0/newfile.pdf

What is wrong ?
Is there an easy way to insert the pdf file into the LyX document ?
Please, try to give a simple and specific answer as I am new to LyX, as well
as to LaTeX .
I use Ubuntu Feisty (quite new to linux as well).

Thanks
Eli

You might try putting an absolute path to the PDF file in the ERT entry.

Also, as far as I know, only pdflatex works with pdfpages. When I try
to view DVI, I get no error message, but the DVI file has blank pages
where the inserted pages should go. That in turn means that dvipdfm
does the same thing trying to produce PDF output. I also get blank
pages with ps2pdf.

Both is possible I think. I don't know how exactly but you should find answers in the koma-script

The community page is German, but if nothing helps I would post there in English anyway - I'm sure
you'll get an answer.

(2) The second problem I'm having is that the Figures in chapters don't
number like the equations. The equations happily begin with the Chapter
number plus ".[equation_number]", but the Figures in each chapter are just
numbered 1, 2, 3, ... Can I make the Figure numbers the same as the equation
numbering?

How this can be changed is described in section 3.3 of LyX's EmbeddedObjects

Good guess! On my notebook computer (which
I could survive having a messed up latex) but
which also runs gentoo linux, I unmerged tetex

texlive (not bad actually).

Once I also installed the immense package of
extra fonts, phonetic worked and I had my
inverted iota.

Putting the phonetic package (sty file and metafonts)
into ~/texmf did *not* work though. I wonder why.

Also I am glad to report that with texlive lyx now reconfigures
without error. I suppose I should gird my loins, and try to put
texlive on my main computer.

thanks for all the help

Not simple I am afraid.

You may have to save as latex and then use pstricks.sty in that file. Or you
can try manipulating pstricks from within Lyx but that may be problematic.

In the new manual Math.lyx, there is a solution (section 15 Functions )
: As an example, if you want to define the sgn function, you put this
lines in the LaTeX preamble :

\DeclareMathOperator{\sgn}{sgn}

Then you can use \sgn in your formulas.
Hope it helps.

Making a wild guess, yes. I enjoy TeXLive without any hassle, so far.
It is also supposed to be a complete and "modern" TeX distribution (as
opposed to the "ancient" TeTeX). You might want to switch to it. If
you do, follow the guide on Gentoo Wiki [1] (don't forget to read the
External link before you do anything with your system). Also, on
Gentoo (don't know on other systems) it is highly modular so do check
the USE flags.
