I guess that the reason aspell ignores "apostrophes" when used for single quotes in a text file is probably because the Alt-" shortcut doesn't work in most text editors, and aspell's author or maintainer decided to use some logic to treat them as single quotes when they were obviously so used? Thank you for telling me how to get around this... I think I'm going to have to re-edit a few files to replace some misused apostrophes... Though being more familiar with the bash command line than with formal writing ("rules"?) I'm not surprised that I thought they were single quotes. Re: two columns article-lyx forget an error
The error probably was introduced above the point where the message occurs. Sometimes an error occurs that allows LaTeX to continue with an incorrect interpretation of what is going on -- the content it sees is wrong, but looks like valid syntax -- until eventually a point is reached where the syntax is no longer plausible. Think of omitting a closing parenthesis in a programming language: depending on the language, the compiler may be able to continue parsing the code for a while before it becomes clear that the parentheses are unbalanced. You may not be able to extract any useful information from the error message other than that there is a problem in the document somewhere above it. The message is not totally extraneous, though; there _is_ an error somewhere in the document. /Paul

Python stall loading layout in LyX 1.6.4
Hello all, I wrote my thesis in LyX (an older version) using a layout and the university supplied style file. I am no longer able to use this layout, or a simplified version, in LyX 1.6.4. I've attached the style file and the simplified version of the layout (The exact same behaviour is seen with my original layout). I confirm that LyX finds the style: +checking for document class sfuthesis [csthesis.sty]... yes But when I select the corresponding layout in document settings, LyX stalls, python uses up 90% CPU, and continues to do so indefinitely. I left it overnight. If I manually kill LyX I get this from python: ^C Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/share/lyx/scripts/layout2layout.py", line 530, in main(sys.argv) File "/usr/share/lyx/scripts/layout2layout.py", line 518, in main format = convert(lines) File "/usr/share/lyx/scripts/layout2layout.py", line 182, in convert if re_Comment.match(lines[i]) or re_Empty.match(lines[i]): KeyboardInterrupt Why does this layout require conversion? Has the layout format changed? (This is not mentioned on the wiki page: http://wiki.lyx.org/Layouts/CreatingLayouts) Considering this layout is so simple, I can't see why python would have problems with it, not to mention no error or exit condition in this case. Any hints? What is the new format so I can bypass the layout2layout script? Thanks, B. Do I need to enter a latex code? I don't know how many solutions there are, but LaTeX is certainly a solution: \enlargethispage{1.50in}~\\[-1.7in]\leftskip -1.83in\rightskip -1.0in Stuff to go in the changed margins go here. \leftskip -.5in\rightskip -.5in The second set of left and right skips are intended to put the margins back to normal. The correct way to do this would be to calculate the natural margins and save their values, and then use them after the custom margins. The \enlargethispage is necessary only if your margins are very close to the edges of the paper. In my case I used this to put a full page graphic on the cover page. two columns article-lyx forget an error
There are some things of Lyx that I can not understand: I am working with an article and from time to time Itransferred it to pdf in order to have a pre-view . Suddenly one of those times that I wanted to transfer it and I get an error of one part of the article that I have not "touched "when I want to see the pdf and up to now Lyx never give me this error. The error is the following; I have an article (paper style) but in two column and something wrong is in my "keywords" section: " \noindent \textsf{\begin {multicols}{2}} I've deleted a group-closing symbol because it seems to be spurious, as in `$x}$'. A simple Perl script could scan the doc, delete any lines starting with \mylyxversion=, and then just before the \begin{document} insert "\mylyxversion = `lyx --version | head -n1`". Once you have the version in \mylyxversion, that variable can be used in headers, footers, title pages, whereever. By the nature of LyX, conversion to PDF is done by a shellscript, whether that shellscript is called by the user interface or called from the command line. Either way, the shellscript can be changed. I constantly run specialized shellscripts to do things like personalize eBooks and renumbering a list that's just too difficult to renumber in LaTeX. This is one of the real powers of LyX -- you can use UNIX commands and computer programs to insert things that just aren't known within LaTeX. Hi, I would like to "stamp" documents with the version number of LyX which produces them, i.e. a PDF should contain something like this: "This document was produced with LyX 1.6.4.1" Is this currently possible? Thank you, and best regards, M. Speiser
