there is one big problem with Lyx that I can't work around. Any time you
click on something, which should open a file window (e.g., open a file, new
file from template, save as, open a skin file, ...) LYX goes to background
(change of color, like it should) but comes back on top after 1/10th of a
second without showing the file window. In other words, I never see the file
window.

There was a bug in the first version of the Windows installer. To fix
your problem,

1. uninstall LyX _completely_
2. reinstall LyX 1.6.7 using the alternative Windows installer:

Why the alternative installer ?

Thanks for the advice,

I tried it. The reinstallation solved the issue with the language change, but
it did _not_ solve the file-window-problem. I still cannot use it.

Do you have another idea?

Thanks a lot,

Florian

Because its LyX 1.6.7 was compiled using MSVC 2008 and SCons and
thereofore doesn't show the problems of the other installer that was
compiled with MSVC 2010 and CMake.
The CMake problem is now fixed, but I don't know the MSVC issue.
Therefore I recommend what I know that works.

Seems to be hit or miss. I tried yesterday morning and again this
morning (GMT-5) and both times the connection timed out repeatedly
waiting for the welcome message.

Sorry, I'm running out of ideas. I've seen problems similar to this
where the map files for fonts were incorrect, but the entire LaTeX font
system is beyond my comprehension. You might try asking on the MiKTeX
user list.

It has been like that for a while - I just recently got a bug report on
my Slackbuild, because it uses the source tarball, and the FTP was
unavailable; when I was updating the build for 1.6.7, it worked - and
when I wanted to test it, it didn't! So, there you go.

Which reminds me: The probably most popular way to get LyX on Slackware
is using the Slackbuild. Would the LyX project consider adding it to the
website?
=> http://slackbuilds.org/result/?search=lyx&sv=all
As you see, this is a link to a search on the page for all versions of
Slackware, so it won't be necessary for you & me to update the link with
a new Slackware release.

Yours,
Morten

ANNOUNCE: LyX version 2.0.0 (alpha 5)

2010-07-20 Thread Pavel Sanda
Public release of LyX version 2.0.0 (alpha 5)
=

We are pleased to announce the fifth alpha release of LyX 2.0.0.

Please note that this release is for testing purposes only and
users are encouraged to use the current 1.6 stable release for any
serious work. We are, however, grateful for any feedback regarding
the bugs and problems you will report to us.

Tarballs can be found at
ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/devel/lyx-2.0/ .
Binaries should follow soon.

LyX 2.0.0 will be culmination of more than 20 months of hard work
and you can find an overview of the new features here:
http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/NewInLyX20

Note that some of the features intended for 2.0 are still missing.

If you think you found a bug in LyX 2.0.0, either e-mail the LyX
developers' mailing list (lyx-devel at lists.lyx.org), or open a bug
report at http://www.lyx.org/trac/wiki/BugTrackerHome .
Please check that the bug was not already reported before you file
a new one.

We hope you will enjoy the result!

The LyX team.
