Makes sense. Thanks for your idea about \Bigm|. I suppose which one is
better depends on the situation.

Thanks, Juergen! I upgraded covington to the newer version, and now Beamer
works well, but Beamer-Article still throws an error...

Thank you, I can see your example now, and how \middle works. I was able
to test it.

I think I'll adopt it, except for some special cases where I want to
prevent the delimiters from growing too much. 

I'd bet it will end up being supported in the LyX interface (without
ERT).
