problems starting to use lyx

1999-04-15 Thread Dennis Schmidt

I am starting to use lyx 0.12.0, which configured, made, and installed OK, with
no options or changes to the source. My OS is Slackware Linux 2.0.0 (with
miscellaneous updates downloaded and installed (e.g., ghostscript 4.03)). I
have three problems that I have not found how to solve yet.

(1) When I try to print directly to my printer, no result appears. If,
however, I export to postscript file foo.ps and then "lpr foo.ps" it prints OK
(so I have a workaround). My printer is device "lp". I have config.lp
(and config.ps) in /usr/lib/texmf/dvips/. I read the "Dvips" section (2.6.2)
of the User Guide, and thought I was set up OK. I use the printer regularly
from xfig, emacs, etc.

(2) and (3) When I try including a .eps figure float (generated with
xfig 3.1.4) in a document, I have two problems.

First, the caption I enter in the dialogue box does not appear in the document
window.

Second, when I try to export (as PostScript) the page containing the figure,
I get this error message, and no .ps file:

! LaTeX Error: Unknown graphics extension: eps.

l.556 {\centering \includegraphics{fig27.eps}
 \par}

Reading a footnote in section 4.3.2 of the User Guide about this error message,
I check the file that it refers to --
/usr/lib/texmf/tex/latex/graphics/dvips.def -- and find that "eps" is defined
there, in the way described in the User Guide, as an extension:

\def\Gin@extensions{eps,ps,eps.gz,ps.gz,eps.Z}
\@namedef{Gin@rule@eps}#1{{eps}{eps}{#1}}

Both the file and its directory are readable by everyone:
504:/usr/lib/texmf/tex/latex/graphics: ls -l dvips.def
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6743 Thu Jul 28 12:26:22 1994 dvips.def
505:/usr/lib/texmf/tex/latex/graphics: ls -l ..
...
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1024 Mon Mar 24 16:46:27 1997 graphics/

I will appreciate any help. I will provide more information that might be
needed.

Thanks for the help chaps,

After some trawling I found that if I explicitly reset
"Layout-Document-PS Driver" to "dvips" (rather than leaving it on
default) I have managed to get over the problem without having to
convert .ps files any further

Cheers for the suggestions, Chris

While this is probably true, most .ps files work fine in both LyX and
LaTeX. If there is a problem, it may be with the particular file format. I
believe there is a ps2eps command line program which one could try for
converting ps to eps. Also, I would make sure that the files can be viewed
with gv or ghostview.

Thanks. Syrus.

I can't see any line beginning with 'InitLyXLookup:'.
When the Compose-key is pressed down insight the LyX window, 'Empty argument!' is
printed.

I'm not sure, but I think its the stock solaris one.

OK, what does happen when you run 'lyx -dbg 1'. I am interested in
lines beginning with 'InitLyXLookup:'.

What version of X11 are you using? The stock solaris version or a
normal X11R6?

umlauts in math-mode

1999-04-15 Thread Ingo Kloecker

Salut,

I'm not able to use umlauts in math-mode. Even if I change in the
'text-in-formula'-mode this is not possible. In Latex however this is no
problem. My question is whether this is a "feature" which will be added
in a following release of LyX.

Change into LaTeX-Mode and type "\mathbb{R}" for |R. This works also for
N, Q, Z, C etc. If you use these symbols often in your text you should
define a macro. For "\mathbb{R}" I use for example the shortcut "\RR".
Unfortunately LyX is not able to view |R. But it is printed correctly.

All right, it's Control-Return, but it only works when you
create a seperated math-formula. In a textline it makes no sense
to work with more than one math-line.

You are right, C-Enter ist Control-Enter. The curser has to be in the blue
rectangle in mode. Try M-m d (M for Meta or Alt) and immediatly C-Enter.

yes it is !

how have you switch to math mode ? you must be in the equation
environement by using Ctrl-Shift-M and then you can use Ctrl-Enter
if you only use Ctrl-M you can have multi-line equations by using the
Math panel.

As far as I know, you are not supposed to include .ps files, but .eps
ones. A PS file is supposed to be send on printer. An EPS file (E
stands for encapsulated) has information such as a bounding box, and
can possibly be included in another document.

Multi-Line Equations

1999-04-15 Thread Rodrigo B.

Hi there!

I downloaded and installed Lyx yesterday on my Debian 2.1
(kernel 2.0.34) and have been testing it a bit. The only
problem I have had so far has to do with multi-line
equations. The document UserGuide.lyx (section 5.3)
describes how create them:
"The best way to do this (...) is to insert a new line
(with C-Enter) immediately"
Now, what is exactly "C-Enter"? Is it Ctrl-Enter? Because
that doesn t work for me, no matter where in the

Can somebody help me?

Dear All,

I'm trying to get some Postscript figures into my Lyx documents. I
appear to be able to import them into the .lyx file okay, though I

the problem is to do with my Lyx installation.

Any ideas, anybody please?

complose-key on sun keyboard

1999-04-15 Thread Jan Menzel

Hi all,
as mentioned in section 2.4.2 (Modifiers and Mode_switch), lyx supports using
the compose key. But on a sun keyboard exactly and and only insight the lyx
window it does not work as described and expected. Typing Compose+"+U leads to
a double-quote followed by a 'U' and not to Ü. Especially Compose+s+s to ß is
necessary for writing German texts.
How can I enable the compose key?

Garbage on the screen

1999-04-15 Thread olmi

Hi everyone,

did anyone experienced the following problem?

When filling a table (after Insert/Table..) I get garbage characters
above the table (that partially disappear when I select a menu item
covering the region where they are).
I have an S3 Virge card (XF86S3V driver). The problem is independent of
the window manager (I use wmaker, but it is the same with fvwm).
Linux kernel is 2.0.36.

Note that on a machine with an S3 (driver XF86S3) all is OK.

Thanks to all.
