Re: OF - Does someone use barracuda for editing bibtex?
Hello, If the barracuda code is not recently updated, it probably uses the library qt-1.44. This is probably not shipped anymore with Mandrake 7.0 (it ships with qt -2.*)). If you insist on using barracuda, you probably have to install a paralell set of qt libararies. If you have installed Mandrake 7.0 with both KDE AND GNOME, (having both has clear benefits), you can equally well run a gnome program in the KDE desktop. That's what I am doing and I'm quite happy with it. From the gnome side, I recommend pybliographer (a little bit time consuming to get the all the gnome gtk stuff installed but it should be straight forward with mandrake 7.0) (gbib is also excellent and it migh work, if its code i new. Had success on Redhat 6.0 but not with 6.1)) Prepare to use about 2 hours on the installation if you do not have all necessary libraries installed, 10 minutes otherwise Oh those library incompatiblities. Re: Cryptic error message
- Original Message - From: "Jean-Marc Lasgouttes" [EMAIL PROTECTED] A common cause for cryptic error messages is when you have references or math formulas (I think) in figure captions or sections. This is because these are copied in the list of figure or table of contents and weird problem (difficult to explain here) occur here. This is what latex calls 'fragile commands'. I know this is not very clear, but if it is enough to pinpoint the problematic part of the document, then I'll be able to provide a workaround (hopefully). JMarc Many thanks for your reply. I think this is exactly what the problem is - I had put a cross-reference to part of the main text in the figure caption. Is there a way to get away with this or should I just take the reference out? Also on a related note, what would be the best way to make the figure captions more distinct from the main text e.g. have them in a smaller font or have a line between the caption and the main text? Best wishes, Dan

Re: bibtex
Hello again: Please forgive this post if I have violated the protocol or purpose of this list. I know it is for lyx specific questions but don't know how to proceed with some advice previously offered to me from here. I have taken the advice offered re. bibliographic programs that run in concert with lyx , but have run into another snag. Re. Pibliographer, I have found the .rpm binary and installed it (along with a host of other needed programs) . It is now stalling when I try to use it. Re. other programs suggested in the list below: most of them are only available in source code, and being a beginner who is spoiled with all the packaged binaries (*.rpm) I have no idea how to install from source code. I will read documentation on how to install from binary, but don't know where to begin. I would use xemacs, but am very new to that too. And the final draft of a legal thesis is due in two weeks. (Yes, I know I whine, but I refuse to return to M$ to accomplish my goals!) Please help. If there is anyone willing to coach me through any particular install off list, please let me know. This is a misconception I made when I first starting to use it. In actual fact, bibtex is a bit like latex in that regard. It takes a file which has special commands in it and processes it accordingly. You could create a bibtex file using a text editor -- or emacs :-) -- but perhaps the best way is a bibliographic program that creates and helps you to maintain a bibtex "database" or databases (I keep my articles seperate from books, and organise them by subject etc). There are a few you could try. Barracuda TKBibtex qbibman gbib pybliographer (still a bit unstable, but highly comprehensive and excellent searching) type any of these in on a decent search engine, and you will find the home page. They provide a GUI front end. All but Barracuda provide a `insert citation into lyx' function. Barracuda and qbibman require qt libs, pyliographer and gbib are gnome, and tkbibtex uses TK libs! Using one of these packages with lyx for all your bibtex/latex needs is a bit like using word with endnote. Hope this helps Tony -- Mitakuye Oyasin
Barracuda
There were some requests on this list, otherwise I wouldnt abuse it for this :-) Barracuda has a homepage on sourceforge, i.e. barracuda.sourceforge.net. It is in the process of being moved from linuxbox and for the time being also hosted on http://wueddy.wustl.edu/barracuda. Please be gentle because this is my own box. I made fixes for the compilation problems on Mandrake 7 - Yes I use Mandrake 7 and hadnt even noticed that barracuda does not compile with qt-1.44 anymore. Anyway the latest, stable release, available from above mentioned location will compile cleanly under Mandrake 7 with qt-144. It will probably not compile under Qt-2 but since Qt-2 is not out of beta I havent looked at it yet. Sent patches if you get it to work though :-) I apologize for the mess, I spent very little time on barracuda as interest in the program is quite low. Other solutions especially Pybliographer seem quite nice too. Roland -- Roland Krause Visiting Research Associate - Center for Computational Mechanics Washington University, Saint Louis

>From the gnome side, I recommend pybliographer (a little bit time consuming to get the all the gnome & gtk stuff installed but it should be straight forward with mandrake 7.0) (gbib is also excellent and it migh work, if its code i new. Had success on Redhat 6.0 but not with 6.1)) Prepare to use about 2 hours on the installation if you do not have all necessary libraries installed, 10 minutes otherwise Oh those library incompatiblities. They are the messy part of Linux. Hi I had serious problems to comiple barracuda as well and I just gave up. A good alternative (the one I use over here) is a programme called tkbib. Its rather simpler than barracuda, but it does its job well. You may get it at http://vlsicad.cs.binghamton.edu/~pmadden/tkbib/ regards []s rlopes --- R. Hello I must be stupid but there is no way I can get version 1.0.6. I clicked every single option on http://wueddy.wustl.edu/barracuda and only found version 1.0.5. Clinking on sourceforge means a dead end. Cliking on another fix release gives only version 1.0.5 (Sep 29). And so and so forth. I really miss something here Thanks for your help and more importantly for your patience.
