In fact, I just made a lyxgdb RPM for lyx-1.1.4-fix2

It contains a ``lyxgdb'' binary which is lyx-1.1.4-fix2 binary
with all the debugging symbols.

The basic idea being that if you get a crashing bug in lyx-1.1.4-fix2 and
can reproduce it, you can just install this lyxgdb RPM, try and reproduce
the problem and send back a useful bug report.

I wasn't trying to imply that all groups are such. But I have run into a
number which were. It may well be a function of their general popularity...

I don't disagree with this at all. Nonetheless, an occasional post to a
newsgroup, as I mentioned before, would place that post in search results
from dejanews.

At the same time I also recognize the possible friction caused by such posts
into other groups.

True, but this is a low volume list. Then again, if lots of people catch
on...  ;-)

The reasons for Having such a group are good. I'm not "horribly against" the

There is indeed a TeX/LaTeX newsgroup, and it is NOT overrun by spam.
Take a look for yourself, comp.text.tex, and you'll see what I mean.

If selling LyX to the public is a goal, as you imply above, having a
LyX newsgroup would help a lot. Anyone who uses Deja News to search

Deja News is also a much more convenient way to search LyX discussion

Mailing lists have a significant disadvantage in that anytime someone

upon return they find the mailboxes jammed with messages from the

I tend to agree with Pablo on this. While a beginner myself as well, I don't
know the value of a newsgroup over this list. NG's (and I believe their
recipients) are quite subject to spam. Having a NG won't IMHO sell lyx to
more people any more than than an occasional post to some other major NG

group perhaps?).

I believe pushing the real value of this list _on_the_Lyx_site_ will do more
for those interested than anything else. Another thing to do would be to
push its mention in the documentation to the forefront. Perhaps a
"readmeNOW.support" doc of some sort which advertises the list would be
appropriate (unless it's already there... I joined the list from the site
without a 2nd thought so never looked for one).

I'm anxious about a newsgroup causing more headaches than anything else, with
little to gain. My two bits...

I agree about the lag. The purpose of this newsgroup would be to get

The goal of having a moderator is to avoid having overload caused by
heated discussions. That would not be a problem for a LyX newsgroup.

Figure labeling - format question

2000-03-13 Thread Mr. Geepus the Sweeper

Hi...

I've just noticed something that has apparently been this way for some
time, but now that I've noticed it bothers me. :)

I have several documents, just for personal and informal use, that use
the "report (koma-script)" style. In the printed output, the captions of
figures and tables read, "Figure 1.1.: Blah..." Notice the ".:", which looks
odd to me. (Is it a standard, somewhere?) Was this layout designed that way
intentionally, or is something wrong here?

More to my immediate benefit, how may I change this behavior? I know
little of TeX except what I've picked up from this list, but I expect there's
one little line I could put in the preamble or near the top of the document(s)
to solve this... at least I hope so. :)

(LyX says it is "Version 1.1.4 of Thu, Feb 3, 2000", which I compiled
here from a SRPM. I don't have info on "scrrept.sty", but its header says,
"Copyright 1994-1997 Markus Kohm and Frank Neukam.")

Personally I would much prefer that the newsgroup be moderated.
Of the newsgroups that I subscribe to comp.compilers is the only
one that is moderated. As a result I can process it daily
without reading a lot of material that I tend to think should not
have been posted in the first place. In that newsgroup the moderator
will often answer questions directly if he knows the answer
right away and avoid having them being posted.
As a result of this experience I MUCH prefer moderated usergroups.

Of course this would require a fair amount of work by the moderator.

Unfortunately I lack both the experience with Lyx and the necessary
time to be the moderator. Perhaps the position of moderator
can be rotated amoung a number of "experts".

I just had a look at news.admin.misc and found a message under
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
("How to Create a New Usenet Newsgroup")

But it looks like there was a bit of work involved so I guess

The formula import is more powerful IMHO (in fact, you may

Maybe another way (I have not used it for ages):

There is a package called psfrac(?) (or something similar)
You need to put some unique text somewhere in your xfig picture
(like 'a_over_b'), and have to define some replacement afterwards
- something like \replace{a_over_b}{$\frac{a}{b}$}, this syntax is
probably wrong, but you get the idea ;-).

So LyX is able to show at least the 'drawing part' of your eps.

Yes, use the other way round: import LyX formulas in xfig.
A bit cumbersome, but efficient:
 - create a LyX document for each math insert in xfig, say foo.lyx
 - export as LateX -> foo.tex
 - compile and produce an eps image -> foo.eps (option -E of dvips)
 - insert in xfig
Be sure to have a \pagestyle{empty} if you want an eps of the right size.

Here is an example in foo.tex (one step back for foo.lyx):
 \documentclass[12pt]{article}
\pagestyle{empty}
\begin{document}
$\mathcal{H}_\infty$
\end{document}
then
latex foo;dvips -E -o foo.eps foo

When you use it often, you will be happy to build a bank of formulas.
You might probably use the customize command of LyX to implement it.

Insert a \usepackage{epsfig} in your preamble (doesn't work without it here)
Insert float/Figure

Insert/Include File (input checked)

It works at least for me.

Since a picture is worth a 1000 words, a sample file is included.

If I do this, then it displays "file=filename.pstex" and thats it.

is there a special directory, where they should be?

Maybe my explanation was not very clear:
I have produced a figure with xfig 3.1 and called xfig with -specialtext flag.
Then I have tried two things:
1. ->insert->figure encapsulated postscript
   I have given filename.pstex_t
   Nothing is displayed on the screen and in xdvi
   When I take filename.pstex then I can see the figure, but the LaTeX code
   is not translated. It is only the information in the eps file.
2. ->insert->file
   I have given filename.pstex_t
   It does not display anything in xdvi.

Thanks,
Torsten

Hmmm. I fetched the eurosym.sty package from a TeX archive, installed
it in a teTeX directory, did texhash, put \usepackage{eurosym} in the
preface and \euro{} in the text in TeX mode ... and I get errors about
missing fonts. What else do I need to use the euro symbol in the text
of a LyX document?

Thanks,

Hallo,

At least, it works fine with lyx 1.0.4, when I input the figure (use
Insert/Include File and check the input box) inside a figure float.
There may be problems when the special text flag in Xfig is not set, or when
a formula misses a $.
Futhermore, figures should be in the proper directory.

I don't know if it really can help you, I don't understand what you exactly
tried.

If you succeed in figure centering, I'd be glad to know how.

A solution is to have a « compose » key on your keyboard. If you don't
have one, you can emulate one with the command I use : before running
LyX (p.ex. when starting X), type the following one :
xmodmap -e "keycode 117 = Multi_key"
(with the quotes). It make your Windows « menu » key (which is not very
usefull under Linux) to act like the « control » one (is name is «
Multi_key » too).

After that, you can use the following combinaison to have characters :

Compose ; s ; s  -> ß
Compose ; < ; <  -> «
Compose ; > ; >  -> »
Compose ; c ; ,  -> ç  (for the French use)
and so on...

Have you tried to set Layout->Document->Language to 'German' and
Layout->Document->Encoding to 'Latin1'?

Hi,

I'm working since four weeks with lyx. In this time I have not found out,
how to get easily a german "ß" in the postscript. The only way it works, is
to write \ss\ in Latex-style. But this is not very comfortable.

Here's a truly hackish solution for you:

1) Generate a postscript file (foo.ps)

2) Use the psutils package and do:

i=0
while [ $i -lt 999 ] <=== replace 999 with the number of pages
do
psselect -p$i foo.ps | lpr
done

Hi all.

I'll be submitting my thesis soon. The university requires that the thesis be
printed on one side only, but (poor me) all the printers I have access to are
duplex by default.

I don't want to manually change the settings on the printer. Is there a way to
force LyX to generate postscript documents that print on one side only?

Thanks.

Hi,

I just uploaded to ftp.sylvan.com,

lyx-1.1.4-fix2.i386.rpm.RH51.rpm
tetex-lyx-1.1.4-fix2.i386.rpm.RH51.rpm

These rpms were created on a RedHat 5.1 system with standard egcs-1.0.2,
so they should work on all RedHat 5.x systems.
Best regards,
