formatting a long equation
Hi.. how do I get a long equation in a display environment to split itself into two lines or more as necessary.. attached is a lyx file with one such long equation that I'd like to have split.. I tried \sloppy in the preamble but it doesn't work.. probably cos the equation is in the display mode? Thanks, nirmal LongEqn.lyx Description: Binary data

importing feature request
Hey list, I brought this up on a different occasion but it seems to have gotten lost in the shuffle. The idea is that if I have a mydoc.lyx file in a directory and I also have a mydoc.tex or mydoc.txt or whatever other importable format, when I do import mydoc.tex, my mydoc.lyx gets wiped out automatically. Now if the import is mangled up or of there is any other problem I just lost my lyx file. What I was going to request is that lyx imports it but does not actually overwrite the mydoc.lyx until I actually hit save, or maybe perhaps lets me know, Hey, dude, I'm just about to overwrite a file, are you cool with that? Question is, should I put this up on bugzilla as a feature request or something? Or is there some hidden subtle rationale why importing works like this that I can't think of? Cos I came damn close one time to losing my document because of a bad import and I came damn close to being very upset about that. On that occasion I had exported to latex and then reimported. And let me tell ya', it didn't work so hot. Alex.

Can this equation be done?
Hi: I'm going to give this one last shot, before I give up on the math editor for this particular problem, and write in plain LaTeX. I want to show an four line equation, in which each equation has fractional expressions. Also, I want a left brace delimiter around the whole thing. The multiline equation env. won't help me here, since it doesn't allow the delimiter. The array env. works, but causes the fractional expressions to be set in a smaller font than the non-fractional stuff. This can be fixed by the use of \displaystyle, which prevents the shrinking of the fractions. The only remaining problem is that the fractional expressions from the different lines of the set of four equations are too close to each other, so it looks ugly in the printout. What I have so far is this, which was done entirely in mathed: \[\left\{ \begin{array}{ccc} a_{\omega} = {\displaystyle \frac{R_{L}}{K_{V}(R_{L}+R_{m})}}\\ b_{\omega} = {\displaystyle \frac{i_{L}R_{L}R_{m}}{K_{V}(R_{L}+R_{m})}}\\ a_{i} = {\displaystyle \frac{1}{R_{m}+R_{L}}}\\ b_{i} = {\displaystyle \frac{i_{L}R_{L}}{R_{m}+R_{L}}}\end{array}\right.\] What can I do to this to make the lines of the array separated a little bit vertically? That is all I need to fix the last remaining problem. Also, can such a fine-tuning be accomplished in the mathed, or can it only be done by editing the equation in LaTeX? Thanks for assistance. LaTeX math input to Lyx-- and back?
I have been using Lyx now for a few weeks, and I think it is a great tool. I do like the ability to enter raw LaTeX math, and have it converted to WYSIWYM (or not, depending on how good my LaTeX programming is that day...) with C-m. Does anyone know if there is a way to reverse this process (I mean *besides* C-z...) There are times that I would really like to see the raw LaTeX again (for instance, if there is a hidden error in my equation, or for doing something that is not obvious to me in Lyx). I often export the LaTeX file, open that, and copy and paste back into Lyx (after changes...), but that is quite a lengthy process... Good day! Put a \vspace{0.25cm} (or whatever spacing you're happy with) at the end of each of the first three lines in the array. Thomas CLive Richards wrote: [snip] 5.- Users *should* be able to fine tune *all* the details about the typesetting. Boxing users in so they can only use what *you* think is good type setting is (IMHO) plain silly. I personally can't find any styles in the pretty small style list which exactly matches the style i need. I should be able to set everything, like the whitespace above and below titles, whether chapters/sections/subsections start on a new page, whether tables are set out on a seperate page, and a whole lot more. Again, forcing users to use *your* style of typesetting just makes users unhappy with the results. The use of your here is misleading. The LyX developers do not set the paragraph environments, they come from whoever writes the LaTeX styles. A style editor would be a nice feature, but it would also be a lot of work. Yeah, ok, maybe your was not the right word. and perhaps tuning all the features is also a bad idea. However, tuning some of the more important ones shouldn't be too hard, surely? things like section numbering style, font size and type indent for the different sections... There is already quite a bit you can do - font size, for example is included in document settings (though you only get a choice of 10, 11 or 12 points - if you want anything bigger, you need to use a class like poster or manually fine-tune the whole of your document). Expanding the rangeof font faces has been on the table for a long time, but it's a larger piece of work than it looks - LyX just comes up with the fonts that are common to just about any TeX installation, and adding more fonts would require it to search the user's TeX directory to see what had been installed. As far as I can tell (C++ is beyond me!) it wouldn't be rocket science, but it would be donkey work. Numbering style is still handled by the document class, though it wouldn't be hard to over-ride it in a similar way to bullet styles, I suppose. Again, indentation of headings is automatically done by the document class. It seems you're looking for one of two things. Either your needs would be best met by some kind of style editor, so you could create LyX layout files on the fly (which would, I agree, be very nice) or you need the ability to micro-format everything as you type. In the latter case, LyX is probably not the best program for you, and I suspect that anything based on LaTeX wouldn't be either. You either need a very clever frontend to TeX which doens't rely on LaTeX, or you need a good conventional word processor (e.g. OpenOffice) or DTP program (Scribus is getting there slowly, though it's still not in the same league as the big commercial DTP programs). importing feature request

I often export the LaTeX file, open that, and copy and paste back into Lyx (after changes...), but that is quite a lengthy process... lyx and noweb
Hello. I am trying to learn how to use lyx and noweb in the manner of literate programming. I have installed lyx 1.3.1 and noweb 2.9 on gentoo linux and I have worked through the tutorial. So far, so good. However, in the document Extended.lyx, I see the following: --- quote - Selecting the document class If you have installed Noweb and LyX successfully, whenever you open a new document or try to change the document class of an existing one, you will find that there are three new document classes available: Article (Noweb) Book (Noweb) Report (Noweb) --- unquote I do not see these new document classes when I open a new document or try to change the document class of an existing document, which I take to mean that I have not installed noweb and lyx successfully, but afaict the lyx documentation does not mention this possibility. What am I missing? What else I need to do to get lyx and noweb working in tandem? Thank you.

I tried it, and it works great (!) If you have an equation array environment, I only get the first element of the array being copied... Hmmm... Have another trick up your sleeve? Re: table
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I am doing this in prosper and it comes up fine just far too big so you only see a small proportion of it. As I have never used ERT before I have no idea how to change the size. I have attached a simple test file. Any help very much appreciated. Hi, Is there any way to change the font size in lyx with prosper. I have tried layout-character then smaller but it doesn't seem to do anything. This is in a theorem and proof slide if that makes any difference. Cheers, Raphae;

Good day! Put a \vspace{0.25cm} (or whatever spacing you're happy with) at the end of each of the first three lines in the array. I've attached a LyX file with your equations typeset in various ways, including the \cases AMS math environment suggested by Dekel Tsur. Hope this helps, Johnathan -- Johnathan K. I'm not sure why you resorted to the article class.. the CV class included with LyX can produce something very similar.. I created mine using the CV class.. it's at: www.personal.psu.edu/nug107/CV_Nirmal_Govind.pdf I can send you the lyx file in case you want to take a look at it.. Btw, I have a suggestion for the LyX webpage: it would be nice to add a section titled Sample documents created with LyX or something like that and put up some user contributed representative docs that portray the potential of LyX.. I see it fitting neatly in the current Wow!
