Thanks for all your responses, though I still think this functionality is
still very primitive. Sometimes you do not want to spell check the document,
or you just want to count the words in a paragraph/abstract. I would really
like to see this feature in forthcoming versions of lyx if possible.

Anyway, thanks for your prompt responses.

Lyx (MacOSX Aqua) bugfixes

2003-07-08 Thread Ronald Florence
Thanks to the sharp testing and suggestions of many users, and the
quick response of the LyX developers, several bugs in the Aqua
implemention of LyX are fixed in the currrent versions of the source
and binary distributions:

  - the Preferences submenu now appears under LyX reliably;

  - LyX does not crash with the tutorial and navigation menu;

  - the ^ key works in math mode;

  - symbols like the integral sign now appear in an appropriate size;

  - the X11 libraries and includes are not required;

  - reLyx works correctly in the binary distribution;

  - the PATH in ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist is safer;

  - other smaller fixes.

Please see http://www.18james.com/lyx_on_aqua.html for installation
and configuration details, source code, and the binary.

I installed Lyx to take a look at it from the standpoint of a LaTeX
user, and found it very interesting. However, the following message was
sent to TeX OS Mac Mailing List which you should be aware of: the
sender is one of the leading TeX experts:

I just discovered that there is now a binary LyX that runs natively on
OS X with an Aqua interface without using X11. It was released on July
3. It's a document processor that uses Gerben's teTeX as its
typesetting engine. It appears to be free open-source software. I've
installed it, but haven't had time yet to explore how it works and
what it can do. Installation is standard and very easy aside from the
tricky little detail of creating a new .plist file.
http://www.lyx.org/
The creation of environment.plist as suggested has nasty security
implications, mainly because it influences all GUI apps, not only LyX.
I would certainly not use LyX until the path settings requirements were
removed from the general GUI-app environment to LyX-specific
preferences in ~/Library/Preferences
I'm going to be better safe than sorry, so I'd appreciate anyone's help
in uninstalling the Lyx files from machine. I use OS 10.2.6. When I try
to trash the application and environment.plist I get a message saying
that these belong to the root. BTW, I'm the administrator of my machine.

Gerben Wierda (who posted the note to the TeX list) personally does
not like setting PATH in ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist. I have recently
modified the PATH in environment.plist to place system bin directories
before user-directories like /sw/bin and /usr/local/bin.  I believe
this creates a safe working environment for LyX and other GUI
applications. I recommend that users upgrade their environment.plist
file for this reason.

The LyX (Aqua) binary package installs a number of files as root,
because the installation requires the creation of a /usr/local/bin and
additions to /usr/lib. If you want to remove these files, you can
either log into the machine as root, or use sudo rm from a terminal.

Hi,

When you say it cuts off most of the slide do you mean it cuts off
roughly the right-most third? If so this is because of the -t a4
option that lyx sticks in when called dvips. Someone has claimed that
gs versions from 6.53 onwards don't have this problem but I am unable to

test this. (I am running redhat 7.3 and it appears to be almost
impossible to upgrade ghostscript on it.) I simply have to export as
latex and run dvips manually at the moment :(

The upside down problem is caused by lyx sticking -swap in the options

for gv. This can be fixed in edit-preferences-file
formats-postscript-viewer where it should say gv -swap at the
moment. Just change that to gv.
Cheers,
Raphael
P.S. I am using lyx 1.3.2 but seem to have had the same problems.

Lyx (MacOSX Aqua) bugfixes

2003-07-08 Thread Ronald Florence
Thanks to the sharp testing and suggestions of many users, and the
quick response of the LyX developers, several bugs in the Aqua
implemention of LyX are fixed in the currrent versions of the source
and binary distributions:

  - the Preferences submenu now appears under LyX reliably;

  - LyX does not crash with the tutorial and navigation menu;

  - the ^ key works in math mode;

  - symbols like the integral sign now appear in an appropriate size;

  - the X11 libraries and includes are not required;

  - reLyx works correctly in the binary distribution;

  - the PATH in ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist is safer;

  - other smaller fixes.

Please see http://www.18james.com/lyx_on_aqua.html for installation
and configuration details, source code, and the binary.

RFE: pdflatex

2003-07-08 Thread Raphael Clifford
As far as I can tell pdflatex can not directly handle included
postscript files. If you don't realise this in lyx 1.3.2. and attempt
to view-pdf (pdflatex) you get a whole selection of rather odd errors
in strange places. Would it be possible for lyx to simply say pdflatex
can not handle postscript images. Please read section XXX of YYY to
work around this?

Re: Message on TeX OS Mac Mailing List

Odd problem with listings package ...

a parameter for the listings.sty package. Of course
everything worked perfectly before! I located the

missing something obvious ... the ERROR messages
say something like this (for each parameter in

Package keyval Error: showstringspaces undefined.

Where showstringspaces is a parameter for listings. I am puzzled because LyX is not
saying it hasn't found the listings package, but rather something inside the listings

Is there something obvious that I should know?

Cheers,
Raphael
P.S. I am using lyx 1.3.2 but seem to have had the same problems.

and binary distributions:

  - the Preferences submenu now appears under LyX reliably;

  - LyX does not crash with the tutorial and navigation menu;

  - the ^ key works in math mode;

  - symbols like the integral sign now appear in an appropriate size;

  - the X11 libraries and includes are not required;

  - reLyx works correctly in the binary distribution;

  - the PATH in ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist is safer;

  - other smaller fixes.

Please see http://www.18james.com/lyx_on_aqua.html for installation
and configuration details, source code, and the binary.

RFE: pdflatex

2003-07-08 Thread Raphael Clifford
As far as I can tell pdflatex can not directly handle included
postscript files. If you don't realise this in lyx 1.3.2. and attempt
to view->pdf (pdflatex) you get a whole selection of rather odd errors
in strange places. Would it be possible for lyx to simply say "pdflatex
can not handle postscript images. Please read section XXX of YYY to
work around this"?

Raphael

Re: Message on TeX OS Mac Mailing List

2003-07-08 Thread Jim Lewis
I installed Lyx to take a look at it from the standpoint of a LaTeX
user, and found it very interesting. However, the following message was
sent to TeX OS Mac Mailing List which you should be aware of: the
sender is one of the leading TeX experts:

I just discovered that there is now a binary LyX that runs natively on
OS X with an Aqua interface without using X11. It was released on July
3. It's a "document processor" that uses Gerben's teTeX as its
typesetting engine.

Thanks,

Jim Lewis

So you are asking how do remove a file on a unixoid system?

If you want to remove these files, you can
either log into the machine as root, or use "sudo rm" from a terminal.

Odd problem with listings package ...

2003-07-08 Thread gofreddo
Hi All,
Not sure if it is just me ... I reinstalled :) LyX
on Redhat 9 (using the QT interface), and now when
I try to do a dvi update on one of my files I am
given an ERROR message for every place I try to set
a parameter for the listings.sty package. Of course
everything worked perfectly before! I located the
listings package in the right place, ran texhash,
ran configure but still no joy! I wonder if I am
missing something obvious ... the ERROR messages
say something like this (for each parameter in
\lstset{...})

"Package keyval Error: showstringspaces undefined."

Where showstringspaces is a parameter for listings. I am puzzled because LyX is not
saying it hasn't found the listings package, but rather something inside the listings
package seems to be missing ... but my system only has one listings package ..

Is there something obvious that I should know?

Thanks

View -> dvi doesn't work

2003-07-08 Thread Rafael Maguiña
Hi,

I've just installed the Ruurd Reitsma's windows port for lyx (qt). It
worked fine until I tried to view what I was writing...

"file not found..." is all I got.

I've had already installed MiKTeX before installing lyx... (but not in
the default directories though).

I've got Win98 SE on my machine.

Has anyone some clues about what I might be missing here?

Thanks, Rafael

grant proposal timeline/work plan

2003-07-08 Thread Raphael Clifford
I have to produce one of those timeline tables for a grant proposal.
It's basically a normal table except that some of the entries are
horizontal bars that start and end to indicate when that piece of the
project will begin and end.

Does anyone have any ideas how I should do this?

Cheers,

Thanx for the quick response!

I downloaded the listings.cab package from ctan and installed it with the
miktex package manager. The package was really missing in my repository
folder. Then I restarted and tried again... but still no luck.

Any other ideas??

1. Does your DVI viewer work properly from a command line?

2. Does Edit->Preferences->Conversion->Formats->DVI show the correct
program in the Viewer slot?

2a. If yes, does it have the correct path? (If it's missing the path,
try adding the path to the entry.)

here's an example of the problem i'm having...
http://hep-www.colorado.edu/~olivas/LyxExamples/PortraitExample.pdf
http://hep-www.colorado.edu/~olivas/LyxExamples/LandscapeExample.pdf

i also don't have an edit->preferences->file.
i do have an edit->preferences->look,lang opts,conversion,inputs, and outputs.
we're probably using different versions? yes, you're using 1.3.2 and i'm
using 1.2.3. i still didn't find any reference to gv or swap.

thanks,

Hi,

When you say it cuts off most of the slide do you mean it cuts off
roughly the right-most third? If so this is because of the "-t a4"
option that lyx sticks in when called dvips. Someone has claimed that
gs versions from 6.53 onwards don't have this problem but I am unable to

test this. (I am running redhat 7.3 and it appears to be almost
impossible to upgrade ghostscript on it.) I simply have to export as
latex and run dvips manually at the moment :(

The upside down problem is caused by lyx sticking "-swap" in the options

for gv. This can be fixed in edit->preferences->file
formats->postscript->viewer where it should say "gv -swap" at the
moment. Just change that to "gv".
Cheers,
Raphael
P.S. I am using lyx 1.3.2 but seem to have had the same problems.
