Attention: very serious problem with fonts and encoding!
It seems that there is a pretty big problem with the new version of LyX with respect to fonts and encoding, when the application is used with other languages, namely Italian in my case. When I write words with accents, for example velocità (velocity), the letters with the accents get screwed up if I export them to HTML, or LaTeX, or even Text! Strangely enough, I don't have any problem viewing them or converting them to DVI, Postscript, or PDF through LaTeX. I can't seem to understand the cause, let alone find a solution. Can you help? I need LyX for my work. Among other things (I am a mathematician), I write articles for Linux Magazine in Italy, and we even published one on LyX itself just a couple of months ago! Thanks for your assistance. Sincerely, Rocco Rossi

change book Chapter to Session
I am trying to figure out how to change the printed output of Chapter to Session in a copy of the book document class. I am using LyX 1.3.4 and teTeX-2.0.2. I tried copying share/lyx/layouts/book.layout to my ~/.lyx/layouts/courseware.layout and then modifying to have: \DeclareLaTeXClass{courseware} and made a new Style Session. but LyX said the class was Unavailable (but it did work, but didn't have any way to export to postscript). I also tried making a new ~/.lyx/layouts/courseware.layout with: #% Do not delete the line below; configure depends on this # \DeclareLaTeXClass[book]{courseware} Input stdclass.inc But I couldn't figure out how to add a Session style or to change the Chapter. Also, I read that the .layout files only effect the look in the LyX interface. So I guess I need to change some book.cls file to make a new file. Any ideas would be appreciated. Basically what I want is a document layout for a book that doesn't say Chapter on each of my new chapters, but says Session instead. This is used for courseware that I have been using for a couple years. Thank you, Jeremy C. Reed technical support remote administration http://www.pugetsoundtechnology.com/

--- Begin Message --- Hi all, Please take a look at the LyX Quickstart page at http://www.troubleshooters.com/lpm/200210/200210.htm, and if appropriate, include it in the "English sites" section of your "Internet Resources" page at http://www.lyx.org/internet/. The LyX Quickstart page is a tutorial that walks through LyX's key points, starting with a "Hello World" document, writing a letter, installation, documentation resources, book writing, table of contents, graphics and tables, and cross references. It discusses creating a layout, starting with simple layouts and proceding to fairly complex environment creation. All the preceding are available on other Internet pages, but the LyX Quickstart page contains material to aid in LyX and LaTeX understanding for the publishing newbie. The "Understanding LyX Through Contrasts" section helps the reader know where LaTeX ends and LyX starts, as well as discussing Fine Tuning vs. Consistency, Graphical Layout Specification vs. Numeric Layout Specification, Word Processors vs. Content Authoring Tools, Using Styles vs. Creating Styles, Default vs Created Styles, Character Styles vs. Paragraph Styles, LyX the Language vs. LyX the Front End, and LyX Code vs. LaTeX Code. The LyX Quickstart also has an entire section devoted to LyX Code vs. LaTeX Code, and another section Learning by Reverse Engineering -- a technique that until now was used only by advanced LyX users. (You can create pdfs in A4-size and crop it, so that only the picture is shown in the output without whitespace.) Some programs use this method. Normally all pdf viewers accept this crop box, except of ghostview. And because LyX delegates image conversions to the program Imagemagick and Imagemagick uses ghostview to display pdfs, you see the pdf with whitespace. In the pdf output the pdf is correctly inserted, because pdflatex accepts the crop box. regards Uwe

Optional arguments can be supported by LyX with the right layout definition. Something like (untested!) Input stdlists.inc Layout Enumerate OptionalArgs 1 Somewhat misleasding, the optional argument must be given in the Menu topic "short heading" (or the like), as this feature was introduced for [sub[sub]]sections. Another possibility would be to use ERT in a nested standard paragraph to start and end the sublist. You will not see the indent of the sublist but otherwise it should be ok. Günter -- G.Milde web.de
