Unwanted spaces surrounding inline styles

This has got to be a LyX or LaTeX FAQ but Google isn't helping me much and my LaTeX books haven't arrived yet... I have set up two character styles, XYZkeyword and XYZvar. They are defined in an xyz_classes.inc file in my $HOME/.lyx/layouts as per the standard, like so: %--

Hello, With the enumerate style a get: 1) first item 2) second item .. How can a get: a) first item b) second item ... in a text a need a mixture of both, this is sometimes i need the first form and sometimes i need the second form. Is that possible? Thanks in advance Best regards
