Hello LyXers, I'm proud to announce a completely revised LyX UserGuide. The current UserGuide was the last time comletely revised for LyX 1.2. In the meantime LyX has got many new features that are currently not mentioned in the UserGuide or only partly described. The changelog of the new UserGuide looks therefore impressive: New: * description of index generation * description of nomenclature generation * description of change tracking * description of the thesaurus * description of Notes * description of bibliography generated by a database (BibTeX) * description of ERT together with a short introduction to the LaTeX-syntax * longtable description in the section about tables * hint about phonetic symbols * description of image, font, and output file formats * description file encodings * new appendix where all menus and toolbars are listed, this can be used a graphical index of the LyX features since every entry contains an explanation or a link where an explanation of the feature can be found * added images for the menu buttons * the document has now an index * the document has now a nomenclature * the document has now a BibTeX bibliography Revised: * all menu names are updated to the ones of LyX 1.5.2svn * math chapter * section about (protected) spaces * section about branches * section about spell checking * section about previewing - The UserGuide is now up to date for LyX 1.5.1 and will hopefully be ready for the next release, LyX 1.5.2. Currently only appendix B in not yet finished. So many changes can of course introduce some bugs. Try starting LyX from that command line. It is possible to have a misconfigured system so that the window manager (and all programs it launches) have one PATH, while command shells have a different PATH due to settings in .bashrc or similiar. If this has happened to you, then perhaps octave isn't in the PATH that is effective when LyX is launched from the GUI. If LyX can't run octave/maxima even when running from a command line where octave/maxima runs fine, then look at the text lyx output to that command line. LyX tend to print lots of stuff when running from a command line, and I have seen "octave not found" when the program was accidentally uninstalled. Perhaps the error messages can provide some clues. Lyx, AGU, LaTeX export
I just installed the Ubuntu fiesty .deb version of the new (1.5.1) lyx to give it a try. I am sure this is a real noob question for lyx users, but how do I get export to LaTeX working for the AGU class? If I look at the export menu I have loads of options (e.g. various CJK lyx, pdf, ps, plain text), but no LaTeX. With other templates (e.g. elsart) the LaTeX export works fine. And by the way, where are the plain old article/report templates? I'm using texlive, and lyx1.5.1. Thanks for any tips.

For me LyX+maxima perfectly works and also computes 123*456 giving 56088.
Furthermore, it correctly computes integrals, derivatives, and
derivatives of integrals.
Only problem: it not able to solve equations.

I assume that means that a JPEG, TIFF, and PNG are the supported raster image formats for embedding in a PDF. Does anyone know if using a tiff would be better than a zero compressed png? PNG is a lossless format, so it is OK even if it is compressed. (PNG compression does not cause any errors or blurring, quite unlike jpeg.) So feel free to use compressed png in order to get a smaller file. TIFF is the same as png - a lossless format. Either should work exactly the same, although the TIFF might be bigger. Helge Hafting

You don't need to use ERT for this - as LyX supports fractions.
Use math mode for writing them, LyX will then show
something like:

on screen. For older versions of LyX, "Insert->Math->Math Panel"
There you'll find a fraction button that insert a fraction in the document.
Then you fill out the fraction with whatever numbers you need. This
means you can even write "2/9" or "5/13" for which no single symbol exists.
It is easier & better with the recent lyx-1.5:
Use the "view" menu and enable the math toolbar.
There you'll see a fraction button, easily available. And it
offers several styles of fractions - both the style
I showed above (with a horizontal bar) and
the prettier "1/3" with a slanted bar.
Either kind of fraction will show up correctly on the screen,
so your wife who don't enjoy latex syntax can read easily.
ERT boxes with $\frac{1}{3}$ can be converted to
LyX native format this way:
1. position the cursor at the leftmost position in the ERT box,
and press backspace. Note that the ERT disappear, and
$\frac{1}{3}$ becomes "normal text".
2. Mark the "$\frac{1}{3}$ part, then press ctrl+m
It is now converted to lyx-native math, which is easy to read.
If you print this, the latex generated will be the same, it is
only the in-LyX presentation that improves.

Lyx 1.5.1 and .png graphics and format files?
Hi, I run lyx 1.5.1 on a vista machine lyx.1.5.1 was installed with the LyXWin151Complete-3-18.exe installer. The problem is that many of my older documents include .png files. When I try to compile a document e.g. a pdf with pdflatex I get an error message that there does not exist a converter for png>eps and for converting format files to eps. What is a format file? The graphics are rendered correctly in lyx. I seem to have defined the png>eps correctly. At least Im not getting the error anymore. convert -color 256 $$i $$o.eps But I'm still stucked with the error message about the format file conversion to eps. What is wrong? does any body knows? Thanks in advanced

I think improving the already existing (and fairly improvable) spellchecker is more important than adding a new one. Adding missing features like "Replace All" (see feature request at http://bugzilla.lyx.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3914 ) would notably improve the workflow in LyX with, I dare say, much less effort than implementing on-the-fly spellchecking.
