The current paper that bothers me also has the same math option as
above-mentioned. I don't understand why it can not deal with
subequations.
Even odd was when I changed the math option from "use AMS math package
automatically" to "use AMS math package", it worked with some
subequations, but it did not for some other subequations.
I used Lyx 1.6.5 on Mac OS Snow Leopard.
Can any one help?

Hi Steve, Yes, you can automatically insert page breaks into a long table. This is done through the use of the longtable package. There is a good overview on how to use longtable in the LyX user manual. Longtable has a few nice features, such as the ability to automatically add a header to the table on every page. I am not, aware of a way to automatically split a given table into two sections, however. Perhaps others on the list might be able to provide additional recommendations?
