DVI, PDF end PS behave differently with photographs

2010-01-26 Thread Richard Brown
I'm confused about the different ways to generate final copy.
Specifically, using the following Evil Red Text, after an includepackage
graphicx in the preamble,

\begin{figure}[h]
\includegraphics {bw_albergo.eps}

\caption{A picture of a room.}
\end{figure}

if I generate copy with the DVI button, I get caption and space but no
picture and no error message. If I do the same with the Postscript
button, I get the same. If I do it with PDF, I get nop picturte but an
error message- can't define the size of the picture. So if I change to
\begin{figure}[h]
\includegraphics {bw_albergo.eps}

\caption{A picture of a tucan.}
\end{figure}
and use the pdf button, it works.

Why does it behave differently?

Because you use ERT. While latex (the command) understands EPS but not
PDF, JPEG, or PNG, pdflatex understands the latter but no EPS.

LyX is very helpful here, as it automatically converts the files in

Hi Rainer,

I'm pretty sure there's a LaTeX command for the word Appendix. So for

might yield Anhang (I used a translator, don't laugh too hard). I'm pretty

Meanwhile, I don't know exactly how you'd put Appendix A on the same line as

Re: in Koma script book: how to put pages before the title page

 Thanks for the reply, Waluyo. I had managed to do this: but
 I am unable
 to put more than one line before the title without getting
 a compile
 error (No title found).

 what I can't do, is to put several (in fact 5) pages before
 my title-
 which is a requirement I have. Some of these pages are
 blank, and some
 contain things like cataloguing, keywords and copyright
 information that
 I am required to put there. However- and this is my
 problem- all must be
 contained in the page count, and all must come before the
 title page.

I decided to do aside all regarding the pages of the title in a file.
 This one has in the preamble:
\title{}
\date{}

Of that way I can do what wants. Then, I export this to Latex. In the main file
I include that file.

misspelled it (e.g., `\hobx'), type `I' and the correct

and use the pdf button, it works.

Why does it behave differently?

 I am required to put there. However- and this is my

These table lists unicode characters:

* Which characters are visible depends on your system font.
* Not all characters listed here actually work in LyX.

However, the genealogy package is another way to get symbols, although
not supported by the LyX GUI.

You need to read the package documentation and insert them via "ERT"
(raw LaTeX) code.

DVI, PDF end PS behave differently with photographs

2010-01-26 Thread Richard Brown
I'm confused about the different ways to generate final copy.
Specifically, using the following Evil Red Text, after an includepackage
graphicx in the preamble,

\begin{figure}[h]
\includegraphics {bw_albergo.eps}

\caption{A picture of a room.}
\end{figure}

if I generate copy with the DVI button, I get caption and space but no
picture and no error message. If I do the same with the Postscript
button, I get the same. If I do it with PDF, I get nop picturte but an
error message- can't define the size of the picture. So if I change to
\begin{figure}[h]
\includegraphics {bw_albergo.eps}

\caption{A picture of a tucan.}
\end{figure}
and use the pdf button, it works.

Why does it behave differently?

Richard

Because you use ERT. While latex (the command) understands EPS but not
PDF, JPEG, or PNG, pdflatex understands the latter but no EPS.

LyX is very helpful here, as it automatically converts the files in
the background.

Hi Rainer,

I'm pretty sure there's a LaTeX command for the word "Appendix". So for
instance, in English that command might yield "Appendix", whereas in German it
might yield "Anhang" (I used a translator, don't laugh too hard). I'm pretty
sure there's an equivalent LaTeX command for "Chapter". Anyway, perhaps your
command for Appendix is blank.

Meanwhile, I don't know exactly how you'd put "Appendix A" on the same line as
the appendix's title, because an appendix is basically a chapter and the Book
document class puts "Chapter 6" on the line above "Why LyX is the Best". Maybe
there's some package that will do this for you.
