1.6.1

2009-01-04 Thread Frederick Noronha [फ़रेदरिक नोरोनया]
Just shifted to Lyx 1.6.1 today and it's very nice! I particularly
liked its superior NAVIGATE functions, that allows you to reach to
specific footnotes, etc. Thanks guys and ladies, who worked on it! FN

a patch for earlier versions

now for 1.6.1? Thanks, FN

Query on printing with 'screens'

2008-11-17 Thread Frederick Noronha [फ़रेदरिक नोरोनया]
Hi all:

I'm a Lyx user in Goa, and hope you won't mind me intruding.

Every time I go in for a book, to be printed via offset, my printer
has a problem. He takes the PDF file and attempts to do crazy things
like importing it into Windows/Corel Draw, etc.

He says the photos won't print because they don't have a screen.

Query:

* Is he right?

* Is there some way of putting a screen on the photos? LyX takes TeX
commands, so maybe if there's one I could use it.

Earlier, he was struggling to find how to print the file laterally
inverted (mirror image), and we found the command after some search.

Best, FN

PS: A cc'd reply to me would be highly appreciated...

Watermark across a book?

2008-07-28 Thread Frederick Noronha [फ़रेदरिक नोरोनया]
Is it possible to use Lyx to create a 'watermark' across all the pages
of a book -- say, something in grey to read 'Unedited Rough Draft'?
I've seen this on another draft copy of a book (not done in Lyx) and
was wondering if similar capabilities existed here. Just need to use
this while submitting books, which should not be taken as the final
version. Thanks! FN

Hi,

I have written a tutorial for Devanagari Document creation in LyX at
WikiHow. LyX/LaTeX is a word processing alternative that is completely
open source and free.

Summary:
With the incorporation of XeLaTeX in all major distributions of LaTeX
including MikTeX, it has become easy to incorporate Devanagari and
other Unicode characters in LaTeX/LyX documents. Here we describe a
point-wise summary to help you do just that.

http://www.wikihow.com/Create-Devanagari-Documents-in-Lyx-Using-Xelatex

Please help me expand/test the how-to.

Thanks, jaH.

Managed printing in 'mirror' by adding this to my latex preamble:

\usepackage{poligraf}
\mirror

Derek had also shown me some great tools for preparing TeX/LaTeX/LyX

 Fred,
I was checking mail at the LUG meet yesterday, and asked Arvind. The basic
idea is that you have to do mirror printing from the program itself (if it
supports that). For instance, (I think he said) CorelDraw or PageMaker had a
checkbox to do this. However, maybe Lyx doesn't have this feature. Arvind
also mentioned that he had (very long ago, in pre-Linux days) done a batch
file to modify a PostScript file to mirror-image the output while sending to
the printer. Based on that, I did some googling, and found something that
may help. If you print from Lyx to a PostScript file, you could then work on
this PS file to get mirror-imaged output:
 http://www.tug.org/mail-archives/pstricks/2000/000469.html tells you, at the
bottom of the page, after the PS code:

Alternatively, if you have the normal postscript file already generated,
please load it any ascii editor, cut and paste this mirror.ps after the
comments part in your normal postscript file.
If you view this file with gv (ghostscript) this will show mirror imaged
 view of the contents.

I think dvips (mentioned on that page) is for TeX to PS
conversion/generation, so probably it's not of use. However, if you ignore
that and use the manual mod quoted above this, it might work...
You could use Evince or other PostScript viewers to see if this works on
your book's PS file. If it does, you could then use the ps2pdf utility to
convert the modified PS file to PDF (the ps2pdf13 and ps2pdf14 commands on
my system were installed as part of the ghostscript-common-8.60-55 package
which is probably already on your system).

Authors' names in the table-of-contents

2007-11-13 Thread Frederick Noronha [फ़रेदरिक नोरोनया]
Any way I could insert the authors' names in the table-of-contents,
without including the same in the top-of-the-page information? This is
for a multi-authored book, where we need to identify the author of
each chapter adequately. Thanks! FN
