If you don't mind me asking an elementary question -- how does one make the
'language' usage consistent throughout a file?
We're one of the few serious publishing houses (doing 12-16 books a year)
that uses Lyx for all its typesetting. Based in Goa, India. Would really
appreciate any help or pointers from anyone on how to make our books more
neat looking, specially with attractive chapter pages.

Query about table of contents in Lyx

Some of my chapter titles are really long. I'd like to break them into two
lines (at a point where I want it, without the line being justified).

Can someone kindly let me know how this is done using the ERT for creating
the table of contents?

Reducing space after fullstops?

Insert row... lyx

The 'insert row' facility in Lyx tables, would it not help if any number of
rows could be inserted at a time (as done, say, for Libre Office tables),
intead of having to add one at a time?

Increasing the width of a 'quote' column

Where the error message shows up

Can someone help and instruct me on this, or kindly see if there's a bug in
the software?

I made a mistake in adding an entry into the Table Of Contents.
Instead of writing
\addcontentsline{toc}{subsection}{Institutional repositories}
I wrote
\addcontentsline{toc}{Institutional repositories}

The {subsection} was missing, so it was my error and the software got
understandably confused!

But here is the problem --

When the error message came, it started to point to all different sections
of the text. Not the relevant one.

Why was this happening? Can this be sharpened, pls? FN

Words in the index, italicisation...

Please could you advice me?

I've got a 304-page picture-rich book. But while generating PDF, the file
cuts short at Page 236. After that, the pages don't show up.

Any idea why this could be happening?

Is it due to a lack of space on my hard disk? Ive' tried clearing some
files.

Resetting footnote numbering after every chapter...

Could someone kindly tell me how to reset my footnote numbers (Memoire
class book) after every chapter? As of now, I'm getting continuous
chapter-numbering for the whole book.

Secondly, is there some way to use symbols for a book which has very many
footnotes? (The problem is that the footnote symbols repeats ... and is not

Command to change headers of a few pages of a book

No, he wanted them to start anew with each chapter, not on every page.

Frederick, the default behavior in most classes that have chapters
(article, e.g., does not) is for the footnote counter to be reset at the
start of each chapter. What class are you using?

Is it possible for Lyx to offer footnote numbering across the chapters? I
mean, if there are 17 footnotes in Chapter 1, the first footnote in Chapter

If I use the {\fnsymbol{footnote}} command at the start of my book, I
am able to get symbols for the footnotes/endnotes, instead of numbers.

A question please: how do I get a large number of such symbols, as
required? At present, I am able to get only a limited number (maybe 25
or 50, not sure), after which error messages start showing up.

Vanishing ToC

Recently, after upgrading to Lyx 1.6.1 (on GNU/Linux), I have this
problem of vanishing Table of Contents. It usually happen when I
switch the 'document class' of my book.

It also happens when I share files with other editors. Any idea why?
It happens regardless of whether I use Chapter or Chapter*. FN

For Lyx users, a problem in sharing a Lyx file

with whom I'm collaborating on a book, the message I'm getting is
"/tmp/song of the survivors.lyx is from an earlier version of Lyx, but

Getting text to wrap around illustrations in Lyx

I am trying to get Lyx to wrap text around illustrations for a book.
What I notice is that if the illustration is 50% or less of the column
width, the text wraps very neatly. Otherwise, the justification of the
text goes awry. Is this some bug in Lyx, or is there some logic to it?

I'm trying to set a book to 12/15 points. Is there some way I can do
this? The options I'm getting are just one-line, one-and-half, and
double-linespace. So I'd be really grateful if someone could tell me
