Hiding changes

2013-11-08 Thread Ian S. Worthington
We have some technical documentation which used to be maintained by a single
person who's now left us.

I'd like to make each developer responsible for making their own updates, with
technical and stylistic approval resting with two other people.

As the documentation is monolithic we can prevent simultaneous update loss by
simple Windows file locking, and identify changes by enforcing change
tracking.

What I'm concerned about though is how I can temporarily hide an update which
has been made but is not going to be released at this time without having to
actually cut it out, publish, and then restore.

Any ideas?

Ian

Could http://wiki.lyx.org/FAQ/PDF#toc5 be out of date?

I like the idea of replacing the bitmap fonts (even though they seem quite
good to me) with T1 vector fonts, but am not sure where to specify latin
modern. On my lyx, 1.6.2, there is no Layout→Document menu item.

Could someone set me right please?

Yes, you need vector fonts. The above link describes how to do that.

Btw. the LyX documentation files (except of the Intro manual) you find in

vector fonts, when they look OK for you, your documents will look OK too.

Hallo everyone, sorry for my mails but we are in a hurry and the lyx wiki
is
not helping me, google neither :(
When I create a TOC in Lyx, it lists all the chapters, sections, etc. in my
book. I can configure it from the document properties, no problem..
then, another feature in lyx is adding Chapters, Sections, etc. with a *
simbol next to them. Those entries are not numbered or listed in the TOC.
Now, I need to put in the TOC one of these special entries, a special
*Chapter. I was sure there had to be an option to add a custom entry to
TOC... or a way to solve this in general. Any help please?

Another problem is a little bit complicated to explain: I inserted the TOC
and after that, the first chapter is the famous *Chapter I was talking
about
above. My second problem is that in the page where this *Chapter is, on the
top of the page I still see the name Table of Contents.. this probably
happens, because Lyx is confused, since there's no ordinary Chapter after
the TOC.. in fact, on the next page there's Chapter 1, and on the top left
of the page I can see the small name: Chapther 1 (the name of the chapter
is of course on the top right corner as usual). So, the problem is that I
have still Table of Contents on the top left corner of the page with the
 *Chapter.

 Cheers,

 Luca

This is not too hard if you're willing to put up with a bit of LaTeX.
In the document preamble, define a macro via
\newcommand{\YourMacroName}{...} where ... is what you want printed for
the product name, including any styling commands. If you're not sure
what the LaTeX style commands would be, style the name once in the body
of the document, using LyX's text style menu, then do View View Source
to see the LaTeX code. Once you've created the macro in the preamble,
in the document body enter \YourMacroName{} in ERT anyplace you want the
product name. If the product name changes, just edit the macro
 definition in the preamble accordingly.

If you're going to be using the macro frequently, you might want to
modify your bind file (User Guide section C.2.2, Tools Preferences
Editing Shortcuts) to bind the following to some unused key
 combination: command-sequence ert-insert;self-insert
 \YourMacroName{};char-forward; .

 I've attached a small example.

the product name, including any styling commands.

If I'm writing a manual for a product tentatively named Boggis v1, but know
that that will change later to something else, is it possible to define some
symbol I can use to represent that in my document so I only have to change it

For further marks, can I define that symbol to have a particular test

Lyx and DocBook

2009-04-13 Thread Ian S. Worthington
I'm trying to find a content markup system (authoring and processing) that can
output to various formats. Something which can be both viewed and printed,
such as PDF, is probably a must, and something easily accessed online, such as
HTML is close behind. If I could also produce CHM (or similar) Windows help
files that would be nice too.

I come from a IBM BookMaster background so I'm comfortable with content
markup, and don't really need an authoring tool to work with it. DocBook
seems to fit most of my needs but the markup syntax is user-hostile. The
DocBook wiki points to a number of authoring tools, most of which are just
generic XML editors. The only DocBook-specific tool there verges on the
unusable. It also lists Lyx which seems a mature and usable tool for Latex,
and produces highly attractive PDF documents. I read though that getting
attractive HTML out of it is difficult.

If I understand correctly I have to choose a target language for Lyx from the
start: I can't start off with Latex and then later decide to I want to target
DocBook, for example.

So having got Lyx installed I'm looking in more detail at DocBook. A lot of
the information seems to be out of date. There's a Lyx-to-X project that only
works up to v1.2.0 of Lyx, and some old discussions on various sites of
needing sgmltools, sgmltools-lite, or maybe sgmltools2, which appear to have
been abandoned some years ago.

This mailing lists contains occasional requests for help, but not too much
information. If it wasn't for the information at
http://www.neomantic.com/tutorials/lyx-and-docbookXML I would have concluded
that DocBook support in Lyx had been effectively abandoned.

I wonder then if someone could help me with the following:

1. Am I right in my thinking that if I want good quality HTML and potentially
CHM output, as well as PDF, then DocBook is the way to go rather than Latex?

2. And that if I want DocBook, then I need to be using that from the start?

3. Is DocBook development in Lyx abandonded or is it just quiet for the
moment?

4. Is there any documentation on what a user of the latest version of Lyx has
to do to resolve the unavailable class messages when using DocBook, and what
they need to install in 2009 to get output from it.

Thanks,

i

Thanks Uwe.

This is with both the normal (large) and alternative installers. The normal
small that downloads didn't work as it couldn't connect to the server(?).

I'm wondering now if that might just be the final message. The [NEXT] button
becomes active but after that Lyx outputs a message saying the MiKTeX setup
wizard was not completed.

I had assumed it was a MiKTex install issue but I've now run the MikTex
install by itself, followed by the Lyx install and it all seems ok.

I guess I was just expecting some more positive confirmation that the MikTex
install had completed successfully than the enabling of the [NEXT] button. And
that was compounded by Lyx complaining.

There's maybe something here that needs looking at?

This is nevertheless most probably a problem with a MiKTeX server. I would
try to uninstall LyX

Then install MiKTeX

reinstall LyX using the

I hope this way it works.

 What installer have you used?
This is nevertheless most probably a problem with a MiKTeX server. I would
try to uninstall LyX
completely, then also uninstall MiKTeX (the part that is already installed).
Then install MiKTeX
manually using the basic MiKTeX installer you find at miktex.org. Finally
reinstall LyX using the
complete version of the alternative installer.

I hope this way it works.

(The MiKTeX server is refreshed every week so at least it should work after
easter.)

Re: Lyx install fails in MiKTex install

2009-04-12 Thread Ian S. Worthington
Thanks Uwe.

That seems to fix the problem with scrbook.layout, but if I create NewFrom
Template and select docbook_article.lyx, it then fails to find docbook.layout,
even though this again is present in the layouts directory.

I tried a ToolsReconfigure again, but without success.

Any thoughts?

Is it always this difficult to get Lyx up running?

Open an Internet connection, the start LyX by double clicking directly on
the lyx.exe (this way you
should see a console window) and reconfigure it using the Tools menu. This
way all packages needed
by LyX will be installed. This could take many minutes, he progress is shown
in the console window.

Re: Lyx install fails in MiKTex install

2009-04-12 Thread Ian S. Worthington

Lyx install fails in MiKTex install

2009-04-11 Thread Ian S. Worthington
Hi

Being a longtime user of IBM's now withdrawn BookMaster markup language, and
having been severly disappointed with the usability of DocBook, I'm quite
excited to have now discovered Lyx.

I'm having problems installing it on my Windows XP system though. The Lyx
install spawns the MikTex install which runs fine, albeit slowly, up until:

fndbmpm: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\MiKTeX\2.7\miktex\config\5c9c2effd97adbeacc8bf220bf73149c.fnd

at which point it just stops.

I've seen this has been reported a few times by other MikTex users but I can't
see any solution has ever been posted.

Whilst I realise this is not a Lyx problem per se, any help, advice or
workarounds would be most welcome.

Thanks.
