Re: Cygwin Lyx CPU usage
It could also be related to your Cygwin setup in general, not spesific to LyX. For instance, if you start a normal bash shell window and run a few TeX/SGML/whatever commands, does it take a long time before they actually start doing something? If it does, have you modified your PATH enviroment variable? Is it exceedingly long? Then shorten it. That speeded things up for me at least. And make sure your Cygwin directories are at the beginning of your PATH. If you haven't modified your PATH, but maybe some other aspects of Cygwin, try to delete it and reinstall it. Make sure you clean out your registry also before you reinstall it. I had to do that once too, and I got rid of the problem. - IT Eugenio Guevara [EMAIL PROTECTED] 13.08.02 22:59 Most of the times that Lyx freezes the computer for a while is because of the autosave feature. LyX 1.1.6fix2 for Win32 hangs on Cygwin/XFree86
Hello, I downloaded and installed LyX 1.1.6fix2 for Win32 after scraping 1.1.6fix1 according to the installation instructions. I'm trying to use Cygwin/XFree86 4.1.0 as X server. This combination worked with 1.1.6fix1 and XFree86 4.0.3. This time, however, LyX freezes the entire X server or, in less serious cases, makes the cursor disappear in XFree86. Has anyone else seen this? Or more importantly; can something be done about it? - IT

Re: lyx pdf
Hello, I would to get a good pdf output from my lyx document. I've converted postscript with ps2pdf, but it didn't look good (at least within the acrobat reader), eventhoug it was ok when printed. Try changing the font to Times from within LyX. This was the advice I got from this list when I had the same problem. It looks fine in Acrobat Reader with that font family. Is it possible to get directly the pdf version, without to use ps2pdf? As far as i know now, it should possible with the 1.1.6 release. However, when I installed it, I wasn't able to do it. I'm running LyX on Win32 and got this option directly. I have MiKTeX installed here. 1..1.6 displayed options to export to PDF upon installation, so I assume it was able to detect the necessary utilities on its own. Does your PATH setting include your TeX directories? - IT

Cygwin/XFree86
Hello, I just discovered that there is a XFree86 port available for Cygwin. Has anyone got a working TeX port for Cygwin and compiled LyX for Cygwin/XFree86? And does it run? - IT

I just discovered that there is a XFree86 port available for Cygwin. Has anyone got a working TeX port for Cygwin and compiled LyX for Cygwin/XFree86? And does it run? MikTex on windows works perfectly fine, no need for Cygwin. Yes, but you still need Cygwin for the Win32 port of LyX. I'm currently using this setup. The advantage of using Cygwin/XFree86 would be the easier access to other related software, such as SGMLtools. I can't get XFree to run on winNT, though. No? I got it running on the first atempt. - IT
Re: Cygwin/XFree86
There is a port of LyX to Windows, it is prepared and maintained by Claus Hentschel, the location of it is: http://www.fh-hannover.de/mbau/tim/hentschel/lyx/index.htm It is based on Cygwin and uses X-Servers (It cant avoid the X-Server for now, though there is a long-term work to allow native ports). I know this, this is the one I'm using today. I think I should reprhase my question: With the combination of Cygwin and XFree86 for Cygwin, running on Windows NT, would it be possible to get the originale LyX, NOT the Win32 port to run in this environment? However, that question becomes academic unless there is a TeX distribution that runs under Cygwin as well. Would it not be fesable that teTeX might run in such an environment? Unfortunatly, I don't have the time right now to sit down and try to compile these things myself. When I do find I spare moment, I will try it. But if someone allready tried this out, I would be very interested in hearing how it worked out. - IT

Documenting software
Hello, As some of you might know, documentation is not the highest priority in many software projects. My new workplace is no exception. I therefore want to try and set a standard here for how documentation is supposed to be done. We use WinNT, and I'm therefore using LyX for Win32 (1.1.5fix2). I have an initial question about this environment: If I want to introduce LyX to these people, it is important that I can get it running with a, preferably, free X-Server, or at least a low cost one. Could anyone recommend one? I am personaly using ReflectionX from WRQ, and I'm _very_ happy with it, but it costs too much. But my real question what type of document to use? I have written one user's manual using the Book class. These seem to work well, but I would like som input from others who have uses LyX or LaTeX to document software. I need both to document the code and write manuals for the users. We need conversion to PDF (no problem) and to PS for printing (also no problem). We also require conversion to HTML to be able to publish our documentation on our Intranett (this place has over 7000 employees, and some of our systems has about 2000 users). I am now in the process of trying to install ans use LaTeX2HTML, which I hope will do the trick. If possible, conversion to "help" formats would be great. Does anyone know of a LaTeX to WinHelp or HTML Help converter? If I get LaTeX2HTML to work, we could possibly assemble the HTML Help files ourselves, but it would be great to get them ready made. Any hints and tips would be greatly appreciated. - IT

Hello, I have written a DocBook document and now I want to convert it to a PDF file using virpdftex that comes with MiKTeX (I'm using LyX on Win32). I have first exported the file as a SGML file. I have installed support for my language in Babel (Norwegian). These are the commands I use to do the convertion: openjade -cc:/openjade/dsssl/catalog -cc:/sgml/dtd/docbook41/docbook.cat\ -cc:/sgml/stylesheets/db157/catalog -cc:/sgml/dtd/html4/catalog\ -cc:/sgml/dtd/html2and3/catalog -ttex\ -dc:/sgml/stylesheets/db157/print/docbook.dsl [SGML file]. And then: virpdftex "pdfjadetex" Egenbetaling.tex Altough I have specified what language to use within LyX, the finished .pdf file is still in english. No errors are given during the conversion. After a little searching and asking for help, someone told me to add the following to the .tex file, manually: \usepackage[norks]{babel} OK, so I did this, but then ended up with this error message: The package babel has allready been loaded with options: [german, frenchb, english] There has now been an attempt to load it with options [norsk] Adding the global options: german, frenchb, english, norsk to your \documentclass declaration may fix this. After diging around that a little bit, and being total new to TeX, somone told me that I needed the following in the TeX document: \documentclass{book} or another form of the \documentclass instruction. I don't know how this is supposed to work, or where the real problem is, but shouldn't the above mentioned conversion routines add these kind of things to my documents automatically? Someone even said that a TeX file _had_ to have a \documentclass tag. If that is the case, why is it not in my TeX file? What I really need is someone to point me in the right direction. Where do I go to look for help in this matter? I suspect this is a problem related to either OpenJade or DocBook, not LyX? I don't think it is MiKTeX's fault, considering that the TeX file seems to lack some fundamental tags that MiKTeX would require in order to do what I want it to do. I have now struggeled with this problem for about a week, so any help would be _greatly_ appreciated. Thank you. - Idar Tollefsen

Re: class docbook W32
The initial search to detect docbook is for sgmltools or db2html scripts, I am really aware that you can use it without those wrappers. They call the tools you have. This could be changed, there are several possible ways to do it. I would like to hear suggestion. How about to search for (open)jade? In order to convert the document, yes, do search for openjade as well. But for anyone to write this type of document, simply make sure that the right layout files are in place and whatever other LyX specific files are needed. It's the users problem if he/she wants to write a DocBook document without the extra tools to actually do anything sensible with them. I have a Windows NT envrioment set up with OpenJade, JadeTex, DocBook, stylesheets and whatever else is in here. so I can performe the desired conversion as long as LyX exports a sgml file for me. Yes. He, he... This was actually a statement of facts, not a question. For 1.1.6 there is also docbook-book. It needs some work but the basis are there. Great! I'll whatch out for the Win32 port of it and get it right away for my Linux box. If I try to start a new document from that docbook.layout file and go "view dvi" it gives me a LaTeX error even before I've changed or set anything. That's why I think that the docbook.layout file is just "for instance" and isn't capable of compiling anything. In any case, in my installation, with the "docbook" template file, I can not import or export anything more relevant than ASCII, so surely the engine room is empty no? What version do you have (lyx)? It is possible to configure the way docbook is converted to any of those formats. I think this might be a problem with MiKTeX. There are versions of JadeTeX out there made for MiKTeX 1.2?, and when installed it wrecks havoc with some of the setup. I installed this version if JadeTeX and started experiencing problems with the dvi files. I then reinstalled then latest beta of MiKTeX. Both have worked just fine after that, and I once again have correct dvi files. The support is not complete, is work in progress. We are missing mainly the inline elements, that will be supported as soon as the Logical Characther Styles are implemented. I'm only too happy to hear that there is some sort of progress on the matter. - IT

Both have worked just fine after that, and I once again have correct dvi files. The support is not complete, is work in progress. We are missing mainly the inline elements, that will be supported as soon as the Logical Characther Styles are implemented. I'm only too happy to hear that there is some sort of progress on the matter. - IT

>> I have a Windows NT envrioment set up with OpenJade, JadeTex, >> DocBook, stylesheets and whatever else is in here. >> so I can performe the desired conversion as long as LyX exports a >> sgml file for me. > Yes. Re: class docbook W32
I noticed your recent posts about using Docbook with the Win32 port of LyX. I'd like to use Docbook with Win32 LyX too, but have been unable to find a file or package to install the document class - at the moment it's not even in my list of available styles I noticed that Marek Woloszyk mentions "sgml2lyx". I thought that was the file used with LinuxDoc, but in any case I have been unable to find anything suitable on the net. I have the Docbook DTDs etc but would be very grateful if somebody can help with info about the package I need to get LyX to show me a Docbook document class. I have a DocBook Article layout availabel in my LyX. This is the latest LyX release for Win32, maybe you should consider upgrading if you are not running the latest one? However, this is DocBook 3.1, not the latest (4.1). And what does the "Article" bit of it mean? Is this not a full fledge DocBook layout, but a subset? I can't seem to find the answers to these things. Neither can I find a layout for DocBook 4.1. The only chance seems to be to edit the existing layout file for the DocBook 3.1 Article, however I don't feel competent enough to do this, neither do I have the time. For the time beeing, I'm useing Emacs with psgml. It works, but is of course a lot more work because I manually have to insert the tags and worrie about the layout of the text itself so that it will be possible to find it again at a later point. I hope to see the DocBook 4.1 layout somewhere out there soon. - IT
Re: class docbook W32
In my LyX Latex configuration file (LaTeXConfig.lyx) I have this entry (for docbook) under Additional Classes. 4.6 docbook Found: no CTAN: N/A WWW: Url:http://www.sgmltools.org Notes: The class docbook is not a LaTeX document class. It is designed to produce Docbook SGML documents, which, in turn, can be exported as HTML, RTF, text, or dvi (through jadetex). You need the sgmltools v2.0 package installed to use this. I have a Windows NT envrioment set up with OpenJade, JadeTex, DocBook, stylesheets and whatever else is in here. so I can performe the desired conversion as long as LyX exports a sgml file for me. I guess that's why it doesn't show up as an available class in the menu Layout \ Document \ Class. It wasn't clear whether in your case, docbook DOES show as an available class or not? It does show up. As "DocBook Article". When exported to sgml, this has a doctype of DocBook 3.1. And I have a feeling that LyX does not provide all the elements of DocBook in the mentioned layout, If I try to start a new document from that docbook.layout file and go "view dvi" it gives me a LaTeX error even before I've changed or set anything. That's why I think that the docbook.layout file is just "for instance" and isn't capable of compiling anything. In any case, in my installation, with the "docbook" template file, I can not import or export anything more relevant than ASCII, so surely the engine room is empty no? I require conversion to html, pdf and rtf. And I have that. Not from withing LyX, but that is probably just a matter of configuring LyX properly. I do it by hand or load the sgml file into Emacs. By doing it this way, I also get a valid DVI file, no errors, trough JadeTex. Based on this, I think the docbook.layout file is working as intented by its authors. What I do need, and don't have is complete support for DocBook 4.1 (sgml, not xml) in LyX. Not 3.1. And I need someone to tell me that the support for this is complete, not a subset. I don't know how to acomplish this. I am guessing that an edit of the LyX layout file (docbook.layout) is required, but beyound that I don't have a clue. And quite frankely, I don't care to find out either because I don't have the time for it. I'm currently, as I stated previously, using Emacs with psgml and I will continue to do this unitll somebody gets around to fix the DocBook document class for LyX. - IT

Re: Win32 DocBook
I have managed to come a far way since I wrote this mail. Take a look at the following URL: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/hoenicka_markus/book1.html I describes "SGML for Windows NT" and it takes you step by step trought the process of installing necessary software and configuring it. It focuses on Emacs for NT (which was just fine by me since I use that a lot anyway) and writes SGML, not TeX, as the basis for using Jade, DocBook, converting to TeX to use JadeTeX, etc. However, when you are done with that URL, all you really need is to set up LyX to use the DocBook version you have, export it to SGML and then continue the processing as you will have learned form the above mentioned document. I was very impressed with this page. It was truly helpfull. - Idar Tollefsen I would also be very interested to know how to do the same thing. I have installed the Win32 port of LyX at work, and I want to use it to write DocBook articles. I have managed to get it to actually do the writing of a DocBook (the document style is present), however I can't get the other pices of the puzzle to play ball. I can't compile neither Jade nor OpenJade. Nor can I seem to get sgmltools lite to function properly (I haven't tried the sgmltools 2x yet). And I really don't know if I have installed the DocBook DTD in a correct manner, altought this appears to be the least of my problems. Have somebody done this succesfully, and could they please give me a helping hand? If you have precompiled binaries, I would be more than overjoyed if you would share them with me, or if you could tell me where on the net I might find them.

Hello again, However, when you are done with that URL, all you really need is to set up LyX to use the DocBook version you have, export it to SGML and then continue the processing as you will have learned form the above mentioned document. I turned that corner a little too fast. I don't have much experience neither with LyX, TeX or DocBook, but I have seen the result they can yield and I want to use it in my documentation projects. From the LyX manual, if I understand it correctly, I have to define a new layout file for a new class. If I select DocBook as the Document layout, it gives me a DocBook v3.1 article. But I want to use the full fledge DocBook v4.1. How can I go about doing this? To continue writting with the current LyX document class and just change the header of the resulting sgml file to read v4.1 instead of v3.1? I suspect this isn't enouh. And what does "DocBook article" mean? Is this a subset of the whole DocBook, or just a commonly used prahse for a DocBook document? What would really help would of course be if someone could point me in the direction of an allready exsisting layout file (and other necessary files) for using DocBook v4.1 with LyX. Does anyone know if such files are available anywhere? - Idar Tollefsen

Ang: runlyx.bat error
Kan, I have got LyX running in my windows98. However after I fired up LyX, and click on the FILE menu bar, I found that all the options are blinking, I can hardly see the options there. But it will work when I click on them. For e.g a new documen will appear after I click on the NEW under File menu. This sounds to me more like a video hardware problem than a LyX problem. As the Win32 port requires an X server, could it be something fishy about the way you have configured your X server? Have you tried other video settings (e.g. 8/16/32 bit resolution)? The reason I ask is because I have experienced some abnormalities when running in 24-bit mode. Not with LyX, but with other programs. - Idar Tollefsen
