is there a way to get Enumerate to continue numbering between separate Enumerations?
Let's say I create a list in Enumerate mode. Then I write some text in Standard mode. Now I want to Enumerate a few more items. I select Enumerate again, and it starts this new list at #1. However, I want the numbering to continue where the previous Enumerate left off. For example, if my previous list ended with item #2, I want the next enumeration to start with #3. Below is an example of what Lyx actually does, followed by what I want Lyx to do. Is there a way to make Lyx do what I want it to do? I checked the User Guide and the Additional Lyx Features, but didn't see a way to do it. Thanks for your help. Joel WHAT Lyx DOES Here's some text in standard mode. 1. Item one 2. Item two Here's some more text in standard mode. 1. Item three 2. Item four WHAT I WANT Lyx TO DO Here's some text in standard mode. 1. Item one 2. Item two Here's some more text in standard mode. 3. RE: Is there a lyx style that bolds only the first sentence of a paragraph?
As Steve said, the Description environment seems to be the right starting point to do what I want to do. Two follow-up questions: 1) Where do I find the source code for the description environment so that I can modify it (sorry, I know, I'm a complete newbie at this)? 2) Furthermore, once I have the source code, let's assume I can modify it to get what I want. Even then, where do I put this new code in order to make the new bold-first-line paragraph environment available in all of my lyx document classes? (And is there a risk that I might screw up my entire lyx installation if I do it wrong!) Now a comment on Ingar's suggestion: It works, but there are two issues: First, in the PDF output (using pdflatek) there's too much space between the first, bold sentence and the second non-bold sentence (looks like about 3 or maybe even 4 times the usual amount of space between sentences in pdflatex paragraph output). Second, although it's a clever kludge and certainly much easier than manually highlighting the first sentence and bold-ing it, it would be even easier and most efficient if this could all be done with one style command rather than two. Once again, thanks for any follow-up advice you might have. Hello Lyx Users, I'd like to find a way to type paragraphs so that the first sentence of the paragraph is automatically in bold font and everything after the end of the first sentence is in standard style. I've typed the paragraphs in this email in this style so you can see what I'm trying to do. I searched through the user's guide and the keyboard shortcuts under Tools--Preferences and didn't see any command or style that looked like it would do this. So for now I've been selecting the first sentence of each paragraph and typing Ctrl-B. Not only is this tedious, it is exactly the opposite of the lyx philosophy! What I'm hoping for is a way to type a keyboard command in the same way as for other styles (for example, Alt-P 3 to get a subsection heading) and have the paragraph then be automatically formatted appropriately. Does anyone know if there is a way to create a style that bold's only the first sentence of a paragraph? Is there such a style already and I've just missed it? I was afraid you'd say something like that. I'll just add LaTex to the list of languages I need to learn--right behind R, Python, Javascript, XML, ... I'll come up for air in a few years and get back to you :) But in all seriousness, thanks Julien for taking the time to write LaTex code that gives the appropriate formatting. I think the next step would be to add code that would end the bold font after not only a full stop ., but also after an exclamation point !, colon :, semi-colon ; or question mark ?. I haven't gotten beyond the tutorial and user's manual yet, so I don't know when I'll have the expertise to take this any further. Indeed, I decided to try lyx to make my life easier so that I could spend *less* work time trying to format my MS-Word documents and more time doing analysis, reading, and writing. Nevertheless, I have little doubt that trying to figure out how to write LaTex code will be a lot more fun (or at least a lot less exasperating) than trying to point-and-click my way to a properly formatted MS-Word document. If I figure something out I will post it here. But I'm also crossing my fingers that some enterprising soul with LaTex and lyx expertise will beat me to it (hint, hint). Then everything is possible with lyx. In latex this sorts of work: \d...@catchfullstop#1.#2\@gobble.{\textbf{#1.}#2} \def\myboldparagraph#...@catchfullstop#1\@gobbl...@gobble.} It defines a command \myboldparagraph{...} which catches the first full stop (.) and puts that sentence in bold (the \textbf{#1.} part). What follows (#2) is in normal font. The next step is to learn about lyx layout and/or module files: How to introduce the above latex code into your document preamble, how to create a lyx paragraph style, and how to associate this paragraph style with the \myboldparagraph command. This you find in LyX's customization manual. Good luck! -- Julien
RE: lyx freezes during HTML (MS WORD) export
Changing the file extension from html to doc didn't work, but it got me thinking...if I delete the first couple of xml tags in the file, maybe Word will try to open it as a regular document. It worked! (I then smacked my forehead and said doh! I should have thought of that before.) The document now looks like an html document opened in Word. The only weirdness is that the top-level headings have this series of characters at the beginning of the line 3 , but that's pretty easy to remove. Thanks to both Michael and Wolfgang for their help. Just out of curiousity, is anybody working on an easier way to move between lyx and MS-Word? As much as I like and am impressed with lyx, there's no way I could use it for a document that would be co-written with others, or that would be edited by others. Easier movement between lyx and Word might greatly expand the potential lyx user base. I realize I must not be the first person to bring this up, but I thought I'd mention it now, given that I just tried to work through this very problem. lyx freezes during HTML (MS WORD) export
Dear lyx Users, I'm a new lyx user running lyx 1.6.8 and MikTex 2.8 on Windows XP-SP3. I tried exporting a lyx document in HTML (MS WORD) format and lyx froze (meaning the cursor turned to an hourglass and stayed that way for more than an hour before I finally killed the program). I couldn't find a bug report about anything like this so I'm writing to see if anyone knows if this is a current bug in the program or is more likely a problem with my particular system or lyx configuration. More generally, I'm interested in what the best options are for exporting a lyx document to an MS Word-usable format. Although I really like lyx both practically and philosophically, I'm concerned about being able to collaborate with others who don't (and likely don't want) to learn or use lyx. Thanks for any help and suggestions you can provide. Best Wishes, Joel
RE: lyx freezes during HTML (MS WORD) export
Thanks for the suggestion Wolfgang. I installed elyxer and attempted to use it, but I had a few problems. After installing elyxer from the command line, I typed the following to try and convert a lyx document to html: elyxer.py CSUS.lyx csus.html This gave the error message pasted just below (hopefully, you can see the screenshot below): Then, based on the instructions in the readme file, I tried the following: python -m elyxer csus.lyx csus.html This worked in the sense that it created the html file (Question: Why did the first command give an error, while the second one worked?). The html file looked pretty good in a Firefox browser window. However, when I opened it in MS-Word, Word decided it was an xml file and the file was filled with all sorts of tags at the begining and end of each line of text. I can't figure out what to do with it to turn it into a normal Word document (I don't know how to process xml). Along with the document, Word opened an xml data views window in the right-hand column of what would normally be the area where the document text appears. The text at the top of this window reads This XML document has multiple data views. Before making changes to the document, choose the data view (XSLT) to apply. I don't know where to go with that, so I'm stuck at the moment. Is it really this hard to get an MS Word-compatible document from a lyx document? Is there an easier way that I've missed? Once again, thanks for any suggestions from the lyx (and elyxer) gurus on this list.
