new Lyx manual about math
I down loaded Math.lyx, put in in /usr/local/share/lyx/doc (Linux box), downloaded the extra image listed below, opened Math.lyx in Lyx and ran pdflatex. Worked like a charm. Hello, I have tried with dvi and ps and it works. It is something about pdf. I have tried also to export pdf with pdflatex. And I obtain a pdf file with 362 kb but when i try to reopen i obtain the same mistake. Best Regards, Uwe Stöhr escribió: Antonio José Guirao Sánchez schrieb: First I have needed to change pictures' addresses since lyx did not found them. What were the problematic images? I forgot in my original announcement that you have to download this image too to be able to compile it: http://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-users@lists.lyx.org/msg61505.html After that i can use view-pdf. In spite of the fact that lyx seems to compile, when acrobat reader opens, then acrobat tell me that my file is corrupted or has an error. It says literally: There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired. Oh, this is strange. I never had this case, also not with other LyX documents. Can you open the PDF when you export it first to PDF using pdflatex? regards Uwe

font problem
I have been using Lyx for quite awhile now and have run into something I do not have a clue on. I have the latex-xft-fonts installed. In math mode, some greek letters appear as boxes, e.g., \mu, \pi, \rho, \sigma. All other symbols seem to work fine and appear on screen fine. Anybody have a thought of what I may have screwed up? This is a Ubuntu system and the above happens in version 1.3.7 (comes in Ubuntu repositories) and 1.4.2 which I compiled. I have an similar system on another machine and all symbols work there. bill

ams article
Using version 1.4 on Ubuntu. Setting up an article with document class article (AMS). In the environment drop down list, we have a choice current address, which in LaTex is typeset at the end of the article. In using this, and running pdflatex, I get an error which says lyxaddress is already defined. Similar things for email, URL. In the amsdefs.inc (located in my case in /usr/local/share/lyx-14/layouts), the styles for current address, email, url use the command CopyStyle Address. In Lyx 1.3.7, I did not have this problem. Further, in the 1.3.7 amsdefs.inc, the current address, email, url were all given defined Style without the copystyle command. So I copied the amsdefs.inc from the 1.3.7 setup to the 1.4 directory; problem seems to have solved itself. Is this a solution to the problem, or am I missing something? best regards, bill

I had Lyxpre1.3.6 version 17 working fine under windows. I uninstalled and then installed 1.3.6. I now get an error that Lyx cannot find any layout files and hence will not start. I do note that textclass.lst is in place. Any thoughts? Bill

adding new tex classes
I recently tried to add a new tex class (beamer). I unpacked the files into appropriate subdirectories in my local tex tree (/usr/local/share/texmf), ran texhash, opened lyx and ran reconfigure. When I opened lyx again, beamer does not appear in the Doc class choices although it does appear in the Tex configuration. When I open a lyx template associated with beamer, I get an error that the beamer class does not exist. Running Mandrake 10 with lyx 1.3.3 any thoughts? bill
Re: adding new tex classes
Thanks Nirmal, just for the record, one does need to run reconfigure in Lyx to make it appear in the Doc class list. By the way, beamer class is impressive piece of work. bill When I opened lyx again, beamer does not appear in the Doc class choices although it does appear in the Tex configuration. You need to have a LyX .layout file corresponding to the class you're installing.. the .layout file needs to go in your .lyx/layouts/ folder. Luckily enough, the beamer class author does provide the LyX .layout file along with the tarball.. check in the lyx (or maybe LyX, can't remember) folder.. put that in the folder mentioned above and you should see it in the dropdown menu (I don't think you need to run LyX's reconfigure for this but if it doesn't appear, then do try running reconfigure)... nirmal

In preamble add \usepackage{sectsty} \chapterfont{\centering} Similarly, you can add \sectionfont{\centering}, etc. Sectsty is a standard LaTex package usually found in .../texmf/Tex/latex/misc at least in my tetex installation. button tools
Dear list, I wonder if it is possible to add a tool button which will open the delimiter and bracket dialog directly without going through the math panel. I find that I often use this as well as the insert matrix dialog and it would be convenient to reach these without going through the math panel. It is easy to add buttons for \sum or \int. Perhaps my patience is required here; I have seen hints that version 1.4 of Lyx will make steps toward breaking the rather cumbersome (opinion) math panel in smaller pieces. thanks, Bill -- ** William O. equation numbers
Okay, I should know the answer to this, in LaTex I do. Using Lyx, ams article style, with ams packages, what modification is needed to get the equation numbers on the right? I know that righttag is an option for the amstex package but it is not clear how to obtain this in Lyx. best regards, bill --

Math Macros
Hello, I am using Lyx 1.3 with qt frontend. suppose you want a macro for \a^{#1} where #1 is user input. In the doc mini-buffer one would type, e.g., math-macro ax 1 (enter) This brings up the macro box in the Lyx doc; in the first box you might type ax (should give the LaTex name for the shortcut). In the second you would type a^{#1}. Now in Lyx math mode if you type \ax you get an array to input something for #1, doing so and hitting space you get what you expect in the equation editor. If you open the doc with say a text editor, you will see an inset for the macro which enables its use throughout the doc. Back in Lyx, hit View-dvi. You will get an error; LaTex does not recognize the macro. In other words the Formula Macro inset in the Lyx file format is not translated to the LaTex version of the document, i.e., it should have in its preamble \newcommand{\ax}[1]{a^#1} You can also see this by exporting the Lyx doc to LaTex and opening the LaTex doc with a text editor. Is this a feature not really working in the qt frontend yet? did it work in the xforms version (I really never used that). There is a workaround: create the macro as above, save the document, remove the macrobox in the doc, then open Layout-Document-Preamble and type the LaTex \newcommand for a macro. Viewing the dvi will now work fine. best regards, b... -- *** William O.
