I finally worked around this issue by changing the fonts from:

Roman: New Century Schoolbook
Sans Serif: Default
Typewriter: Default

to:

Roman: Tex Gyre Schola
Sans Serif: Tex Gyre Heros
Typewriter: Tex Gyre Cursor

I didn't try setting Sans and Typewriter to default: At this point I
want them specified so this stuff doesn't happen to me on a future
upgrade.

Interestingly, it didn't matter whether I specified encoding as Default
or T1 (is the default T1?, that would explain it).

In this thread, Günter and Liviu gave some advice that in Günter's case
I didn't understand, and in Liviu's case I'd had enough and just
switched to using a Ubuntu VM to compile my books.

This is obviously a workaround: I didn't identify the root cause of
failure with New Century Schoolbook. And there's a lot of
experimentation I could have done to narrow the cause, that I just
didn't have time to do. But it's worked around: If you have trouble
with pncr fonts and you use New Century Schoolbook, try TeX Gyre Scola
and its brethren.

Thanks Günter, thanks Liviu. And a big thanks to Fred Sias, who told me
about the TeX Gyre fonts. All's well that ends well.

What are your font settings? Default, Latin Modern, something else?

Remember, that LyX has the strange behaviour that the default for the font
encoding differs from the LaTeX default (it is set to T1 for good reasons)
while the default for the font is not accordingly changed. Depending on the
LaTeX installation, this results in either bitmapped EC fonts or the
"CM-Super" fonts beeing used:

* the default fonts (CM) are only available in OT1 (7-bit) font encoding,

* the fallback substitution with a standard installation are the bitmapped
EC fonts (bitmapped fonts cannot be scaled, maybe this is your problem),

* if the large set of CM-Super fonts is installed, it sets itself up as
CM-substitution for several font encodings including T1.

I usually getting such issues because of missing font. Check your
LaTeX distribution first. If you want to make sure LyX is not the
culprit, export to LaTeX and try to compile that.

Has font usage changed between 2.03 and 2.14

2015-10-09 Thread Steve Litt
Hi all,

I'm moving from Debian Wheezy with LyX 2.03 to Void Linux with LyX
2.14. None of my books compile on the Void machine. They all gripe
about T1 fonts when the exported latex is compiled with the latex
command.

It seems like they gripe about pncr8t=12pt when I set the default font
size to 12 points.

I haven't been able to switch to Luafonts because that screws up in
other ways.

I suppose I could start installing old LyX versions to see if it's a
LyX version thing, but that's very time consuming so I'm asking the
list first. Google seems mute on the subject.

Thanks,
