Low quality instant preview of math
Hi, The quality of the rendered instant previews for math is low compared to the actual output (see attachment). It's too thin and a bit blurry. I guess a bitmap for a lower resolution device is being rendered instead of svg, but I don't know how to check that. This is in macOS Sonoma with 2.4.0 RC3. Any tips on how to fix this? Thanks, that did the trick. I assume that the setting of the default rendering engine was important, obviously it is always the last setting one doesn’t try that fixes things. -- Respectfully, Robert Susmilch === The "gobbledygook" in this email is due to this email having been "signed" with PGP for security. Math Instant Preview Failing due to Fontspec
Dear List, I am attempting to track down lack of instant preview for math equations. It seemed to be a random event between different files not working. I chalked it up to random incompatibilities between all the various classes and preambles, etc. However, even a new document doesnât seem to work with a basic equation. I have looked into the tmp directory, and found that the previews are not generated because: ! ! Fatal fontspec error: "cannot-use-pdftex" ! ! The fontspec package requires either XeTeX or LuaTeX to function. ! ! You must change your typesetting engine to, e.g., "xelatex" or "lualatex" ! instead of plain "latex" or "pdflatex". ! ! See the fontspec documentation for further information. ! ! For immediate help type H . !... I have changed my graphics driver under Document settings to XeTeX, but no dice. I also changed my default engine to pdflatex, but I wouldnât be able to compile my document then. I am using KOMA-Script and fontspec. All the equations render if I preview the ENTIRE document, but not the instant preview. Is there a setting Iâm missing? Is this not possible unless everything is vanilla pdflatex? I can manually load the TeX file into Texmaker, compile under LuaLaTeX, and a nice preview pdf comes up. -- Respectfully, Robert Susmilch ==The "gobbledygook" in this email is due to this email having been "signed" with PGP for security. \batchmode %% LyX 2.1.4 created this file. Instant Preview when opening existing LyX file?
Hello! When I open my existing LyX files with instant preview enabled for equations, existing equations will only be rendered as instant-preview after I change something in them. Many of my equations however contain inconvenient visual clutter, e.g. empty left sides or large horizontal spaces in AMS align environments. These would look much better in the editor if consistently rendered as preview, rather than as the equation editor. Is it possible to make LyX render a preview for existing equations when opening a file? - Klaus
Re: Instant Preview when opening existing LyX file?
Hello again! I tried a minimal example (simple-example.lyx) and there it actually worked. It also worked after seriously stripping down an actual project file. It turns out that the issue arose due to a command defined with \providecommand in the body of the text and used within \AtEndDocument. When compiling the preview, the contents of the body of the lyx document are imported into a single preview block, \begin{preview} \input{1E_...} \end{preview} Here \providecommand defines the macro locally to this environment, but \AtEndDocument has a global effect, so when reaching \end{document} the previously defined macro is used but undefined, preventing compilation. In such cases, LyX tends to fail quietly, and I mistook it for standard behaviour since it affected all my recent documents. So, thanks for the help! Awkwardly enough, yet again do a minimal example showed the origin of the issue :-/ best regards, Klaus 2015-05-04 13:09 GMT+02:00 edu Gpl mandrivagn...@gmail.com: Can you add examle.lyx . The view command (cmd-R) works finefor me. I tried to start LyX from the command line to see if that fixed the instant previewproblem, but that does not seem to be the case.

Instant preview no longer works in OSX Yosemite
After I upgraded to Yosemite, instant preview of math no longer works. Is that a general issue?

Sometimes I wonder if these Apple updates are worth it. So little new, but so many things (LyX, Matlab, Mathematica, BiBTeX, VNC) don't work without a lot of fiddling.

Starting LyX from the terminal once or twice, and each time using preview from LyX fixes the problem. On-the-fly preview? (Beyond instant-preview)
Hello! Publications in physics mostly use a two-column format and I am recently trying to adopt this style for my private (equation-heavy) summaries as well. However, I found that for my workflow in two-column documents fast feedback about the layout of equations, especially their width with respect to column width, is essential. In TeXStudio there is the preview feature, which on the fly while editing the equation provides a rendering, as it will appear in the document, but obviously TeXStudio lacks LyX's convenience in editing the equation. However, LyX's instant-preview feature (which by default is disabled for math) requires interrupting editing the equation, moving the cursor outside. Also, when the equation is too wide for the column, it will be cut off in the preview rather than showing the full misformatted equation (though this is actually positive for unnumbered equations). So I was wondering if I am missing a feature. Is there some on-the-fly preview of equations possible in LyX, while editing the equation? Currently my best guess is document preview with Ctrl+R (pdflatex), but this is still rather slow. regards, Klaus

IMHO, it's not needed anymore. The preview consists of two scripts: lyxpreview2bitmap.py and legacy_lyxpreview2ppm.py. The first one imports legacy_conversion_step1 (the latex conversion) from the second one. The pnmcrop is part of legacy_conversion_step3 and not used. If I'm not wrong, the wiki is outdated here. I'll correct this, if nobody objects. Stephan

Instant preview with TeXLive 2012 (final)
For those of you using Fedora TeXLive 2012, which has been recently updated to the final revision: http://www.linux.cz/pipermail/texlive/2012-June/000505.html Since this last revision, instant preview did not work any longer. I guess the reason is that there is no longer a texlive-preview package available, which provides the style preview.sty. AFAIK, this style file is needed to enable instant preview. I just wanted someone to confirm that this is indeed the case, and if there is another alternative, apart from waiting for the preview package to come back to the fedora texlive repository. Thanks. -- Rudi Gaelzer Department of Physics Institute of Physics and Mathematics Federal University of Pelotas BRAZIL Registered linux user # 153741
Re: Instant preview with TeXLive 2012 (final)
Ok. I've just found out that the tex-preview rpm is being distributed now by the official fedora repository. I installed it and got a partial success, since the equations are being rendered again, except for the numbered ones. I don't know the reason why. Re: PDF handling in Instant Preview
Am Freitag, 15. Juni 2012, 21:34:31 schrieb Rudi Gaelzer: How does LyX handle pdf files to show them with Instant Preview? In Preferences - File Handling - File Formats, any PDF option uses xdg-open as viewer, which in my case is Okular (using KDE here). However, when Instant Preview is going to display a pdf image for the first time, it apparently uses gs (ghostscript) to convert the PDF to EPS first. On itself, this is no big deal, but the problem is that for some reason gs takes a long time converting the image, and when I have a text with a lot of figures, it can be quite a PITA. Is there any alternative for me in this case? Use draft and run the pdf conversion with figures before a coffee break Wolfgang
