So for instance, in English that command might yield "Appendix", whereas in German it might yield "Anhang" (I used a translator, don't laugh too hard). I'm pretty sure there's an equivalent LaTeX command for "Chapter". Anyway, perhaps your command for Appendix is blank. Meanwhile, I don't know exactly how you'd put "Appendix A" on the same line as the appendix's title, because an appendix is basically a chapter and the Book document class puts "Chapter 6" on the line above "Why LyX is the Best".
