 Box works fine as a replacement, though.

FYI I get the same problem with LyX 1.6, and googling comp.text.tex, I see 
many similar reports from plain LaTeX users. I cannot imagine LyX ever 
outputted different LaTeX with this very construct, so I have no idea what 
could have changed, except for your input.

something has changed in how that construct works in LyX.  The Insert 
Box works fine as a replacement, though.

The native support was tried (though it took me a moment, as your
support appears to be different that using framed itself.  The normal
framed commands failed.  Found LyX's version under insert.  

That worked fine once I figured out how to adjust it to show up
properly.  It overflowed on the right and had a large space on the left
inside part of the frame.  I removed the quotation environment, set the
minipage's size to 85% of the margin, and centered it.

Thanks for that heads-up!  Now my cross-references work too!  :)

One thing I forgot to mention was that fonts had to be generated when I
opened the dvi file.  I guess LaTeX didn't finish?
