We should really set up some kind of fallback mechanism that works
(a) when Lars is not available (which seems to be rather common lately)
and (b) without the help of Third Parties.

FWIW, I've taken a backup of the wiki on 2007-03-18.

But we really should set up some fallback mechanism. We need access to a
secondary server somewhere... For testing out the fallback mechanism, I
guess I could use my PVR at home as a test setup, but that machine will
never be able to take the load even though my internet connection could
handle it.

We do not need a hot syncronization. rsync every 10 minutes or so to a
machine on standby and making this one accessible as lyx2.org (or
whatever) if and only if lyx.org failes would be completely sufficient.

I finally managed to decipher that sentence after a little while ;-)

Anyway, I agree. We just need a server somewhere. Web pages can be checked
out from Subversion. The wiki (pages) needs a bit of fiddling as some
addresses are hardcoded to wiki.lyx.org. Perhaps by letting a script parse
the HTML just before it's shown, replacing all references to *.lyx.org
with *.lyx2.org.

While waiting for the server, I should probably try and setup the backup
server on the same machine but under a different virtual name to see that
bit works.

Some thoughts,

It can't be that hard to setup a mirror site called lyx2.org or something else
that is easy to remember if one can't setup a round robin DNS.

Syncronization with lyx.org and the wiki is another problem that has to be

I just want to mention one last resort if there is no alternative:
the Wayback Machine. It's not up to date in the sense of a real

I need access becuase I am learning to use it and I think the wiki is
really very complete.
I live in Argentina, maybe it is a routing problem :-S

Thanks a lot,

Something broke and the key personnel do not yet know what broke, why it
broke, or how to fix it. The one person with access to the server is
unavailable.

It might actually be so silly that the address we have for the person with
access goes via the server that's down. So we need the server working in
order to contact the person who can fix the server... catch 22.

I think we'll make some progress this week though!

How about a quick post card to Norway? I'm sure people are always
delighted to receive a card in the post. Address see attachment.

Royal Mail from the UK two days... I'll raise postage on list approval.

Cheers, Sam
