Thanks for your help. As downgrading to Qt 4.4.3 was not really an option with my OpenSuSE 11.1 (well at least my box would not like the idea all to much...) I followed your hint, moved /usr/bin/lyx to /usr/bin/lyx-bin and created a small executable bash file with the line lang=de...@utf8
