LyX can't split a cell, but you can work around this fact by creating an
extra column. Then, merge cells on all lines except the one where

you want the split.

This gives you a horizontal "split", although with some work. You may
want to file a wishlist item on bugzilla.lyx.org about this - the LyX

GUI could certainly automate such an operation.

There is no vertical splitting, but it is still possible to make
a table that look like yours. Simply make the dividing line
invisible in some places, and it should look like your pdf.

Actually putting something into those cells will reveal the
fact that they aren't really merged horizontally.

I attached a LyX file that looks like your example.
It works with Lyx version 1.5

I had to use the upcoming LyX-1.6 to make it, as getting the lines right
in LyX 1.5 is hard. This is much easier in LyX 1.6. Still, the file
uses no 1.6 specific stuff, so it converted nicely to 1.5 format.

In LyX, you cannot split cells, only fusion columns. So, AFAIK, you
cannot do what you want within LyX, quite bad I admit. I guess you can
do it using ERT of course.

Abdel.

I think multi-column (merge cells) can be used to create that table.
Use two columns, then you merge two horizontal cells.

You can only merge _vertical_ cells AFAICS (tested in 1.6).

Abdel.

Sorry, I didn't read this properly. You can make something similar
with a table in a table

Excellent! Can you imagine that after 12 years using LyX and maybe 2
years developing it I never knew that this was possible? One always
learns :-)

but the borders will be different.

The borders can be adjusted I think.

Abdel.

I can merge horizontal (i.e. columns) in my Lyx 1.5 for what its worth
:-) Vertical merging needs ERT.
