You can view dvi directly by setting your dvi viewer to be 'xdvi' on mac.
Just type 'xdvi' in the preference options

Hi,

Just another stupid question: how do I call it
from LyX? I tried to change the "Viewer" field in Preferences/File
Formats/pdflatex to "skim" but that doesn't seem to work. Do I need
to add

any command options?

that is by no means a stupid question, and besides, you're almost
there: Go to Preferences --> File Formats --> PDF (pdflatex) and enter
"open -a skim" in the Viewer field (you may replace "skim" with
whatever application you want to open PDFs with).

You can also do that for, say, DVI, because as you correctly observed:

I just found that Skim itself opens dvi's.

Cheers,
Christian

I don't know if it works for .dvi files, but TeXShop will
automatically update .pdfs: TeXShop > Preferences > Preview >
Automatic Preview Update.

I use Skim () for most .pdf
viewing, including those produced by LyX. You can set automatic
updating in Skim > Preferences > Sync > Check for file changes. Skim
will ask you each time whether you want to reload the file; this can
be disabled using a hidden preference, as documented here:

There are .dvi viewers on Mac, but I never use them. You can check
the LyX/Mac wiki for a couple options: .

Hello LyX users,

I used LyX on Linux for a while and using kpdf I had the good feature that
whenever I updated a DVI/PDF file, it would automatically reload on the
viewer. I am now using MAC, and Texshop as viewer for DVI (It actually seems
to convert the file to PDF before opening it, for some reason I don't
understand) and Acrobat professional as a viewer for PDF. None of these have
the feature of watching the file for update. Could anyone recommend a good
viewer for MAC that has this feature, for DVI and/or PDF?

Thanks,
Eric

I tried that option before, but for some reason it doesn't seem to work for
DVIs (or more correctly for the PDF that Texshop creates from the DVI).

Thanks, I have installed it. Just another stupid question: how do I call it
from LyX? I tried to change the "Viewer" field in Preferences/File
Formats/pdflatex to "skim" but that doesn't seem to work. Do I need to add
any command options? Or add skim to the path? I'm not much of a MAC user
yet, sorry. In fact I couldn't even figure out how to change the default
file associations in MAC, to open PDF's or DVI's automatically with Skim.

I just found that Skim itself opens dvi's.

Thanks for the help!
