Steve,

I looked at VimOutliner last night and have begun using it. I watched your
video, and it has been easy to get started since I already use vim every
day, and have already been using it to generate outlines, just without the
folding and other nice features VimOutliner provides. It really is nice.
Thanks.

Telmo,

I appreciate your input, I have not used the "labels and references" part of
the outline view. It defaults to "table of contents" so I hadn't realized it
could be used in this way. Good tip. Looks like it's time for me to go
through the documentation a bit more thoroughly.

All,

While I use vim for many tasks, I have still never found a program as good
as LyX when it comes to taking notes for classes. It's the only program I'm
aware of that a skilled user (not me, I'm not quite fast enough yet) can
keep up taking notes on a computer in a Mathematics or Engineering class.
You just can't get the equations and formulas in quickly enough with
anything else. Go LyX!

Personally, I use LyX as a simple note taking tool because I like to be able to
associate labels with my notes and to quickly find all notes marked with a
certain label. LyX's labels can be used for that purpose very effectively.
Basically, at the top of my notes file, I create a list of labels with Insert>
Label. Then, anywhere I wish to label a note, I do Insert> Cross-Reference and
choose the appropriate label. By keeping the Document> Outline window open
displaying Labels and References, I can see a list of all references to each
label, and quickly jump to any such reference.

Hey, this was mostly the reason why I implemented the ref support for
labels and references, it's good to know that this is useful to other
people for the very same purpose :-)

What sort of "notes" are these? It's too vague a term without some context.

In my day job I work as an amanuensis for Deaf and disabled students. The
notes I write (or type) are expected to be nothing more than a verbatim
transcript of the class/meeting/lecture. There is supposed to me some
marginalia (e.g., student X enters the class room 20 minutes late, student Y
is shouting). Except that because of some of the syndromes I deal with
"notes" cannot be linear text. Mind Maps, spider diagrams, fish diagrams,
bubble charts. heirarchical outlines, even drawings are all in my
note-taker's arsenal. Then for those with Myers-Erlan syndrome I have
different colloured papers and pens. And then there's layout --- I rather
like the layout of the Cornell note taking system; then other days I'll use
plain white paper.

In my other day job I an a researcher. The notes then consist of everything
from interesting quotes transcribed into a commonplace book to fragments of
academic papers.to papers and books that I'm editing. Here I need
applications (sic) that let me organise these notes for later retrieval,
review, and rewrites. I use a mix of Journler, Scrivener and eventually lyx.
That's all on Mac OS X, if you hadn't guessed. And I've even been known
to resort Apple's Stickies app in both its incarnations (pure app and
Daskboard widget). I also carry a ADoc/Levinger/Rollabind-style notebook
with me. I scribble notes and jot down ideas on the removable pages and then
reorder them for research idea, theological study, language usage, etc
later.

I doubt that lyx alone could satisfy my own requirements. But you've not
provided sufficent context to know what to suggest.

I tend to use article or report for this purpose.

I don't care about the pdf looks, since my notes will never be printed.
I care about very distinctive part/section/subsection etc (ideally with
diff. colors even).

The section headings are distinctive, but not colored.
Color (on screen) can be added though. Make a copy of the article.layout
called something like "myarticle.layout".
In the "Font" section of "Style Part", add "Color blue" after the size.

Settings for "section", "subsection" etc. is in stdsections.inc,
copy what you need to change into "myarticle.layout"

You can also change font sizes and vertical separation. And many
other things too.

An something that formats paragraphs with some space separation and no
indent.
Most document classes supports this - make a template document, or save
it as default for all documents. (The setting is under
"Document->Settings->Text Style"

Hi SteveT,

I know vimOutliner. I used it for a while, long ago. Not having formatting,
links, and images is a showstopper for me. I think I can be almost as fast
with lyx now. Still, I appreciate your taste :)

This is non-responsive to your exact question but may (or may not) be
something you appreciate...

I wouldn't be caught dead taking notes with any software other than
VimOutliner. VimOutliner's top design priority was authoring speed, and it's
incredibly fast while still making it easy to take structured notes, shift
things around, reorganize things, etc. VimOutliner has a body text feature so
you can write long quotes and they'll word wrap and not become part of the
hierarchy.

When you get home, you'll clean up your VimOutliner based notes and then run a
script to put them into LyX or LaTeX form, with a layout using no indents but
separation and different fonts and colors. Or you can just leave them in
VimOutliner form.

Once again, when it comes to realtime notetaking, VimOutliner is much faster
than LyX. LyX's long suit is authoring documents with lots of body text, not
realtime notetaking where most of what you write is part of the hierarchy.
