I have tested possibilities. What I need to do, works if I *check*:
* Case sensitive (standard menu)
* Ignore format (settings menu)
* Search only in maths (settings menu)

$\mathfrak{p}$ with $p$, everything is ok.
HOWEVER, if I try to replace $p$ with $\mathfrak{p}$, then the latter becomes

Closing all open buffers and reopening a new document has corrected this
issue, but if I can help you to find the source of this bug, I would be
happy to do it.
I use LyX under OSX 10.13.6
