One of the first things to test is to see if this is a problem of lyx or if you see it in other qt5 based applications. Simple examples here are kate and kwrite but any other application based on qt5 is OK to test. Could you try please and see if the problem also happens there? I can also confirm that the qt5 5.11 works well. My old setup, fedora 29 and lyx 2.3.3, where all the accents worked had qt5 5.11. By the way, if I write in another application (not qt based) like nedit and made copy and paste with the mouse I obtain the accents but not the newlines, if I insert the file (Insert -> file -> plain text) I obtain the new lines but not the accents (same behaviour if I import the text). Does it exist a setting in lyx in order to have the best of both procedures? Thanks to all of you. I believe I can confirm that this is a qt bug. Following Daniel's suggestion I installed featherpad (a qt application) and it has the same lyx behaviour: the dead keys are really dead. I was going to install from source but I think that it doesn't matter. Has it appeared any workaround? I updated the app and my combination keys stopped working (as did Ibus X-Sampa, an IPA keyboard layout). After some back-and-forth with the developers, I figured out that the problem was a QT dependency, libqt5svg5 >= 5.9.8. The Debian repos are up to 5.9.5. But it isn't one of the dependencies of lyx, which seems to be using QT4, so there may be something else going on. I have similar problem with Czech keyboard and it boils down to changes in underlying Qt library, you might be suffering from the same thing. So the bad news is that this is to stay no matter what version of LyX you try, the good news is that you might be able to use workarounds other ppl already pointed to. Jorge Hernando I'm not familiar with Fedora, but on Mint (and this presumably also works on Ubuntu) I went into the system keyboard preferences (not LyX preferences) and set the "compose" key (in my case to the right Alt key). So in any text application, the combination Alt+' a and the combination Alt+a ' both produce á (with Alt being the right Alt key). This also works in LyX. Don't forget to use your new kmap.
