Just curious: why?
A good quality replacement would probably last at least another ten years.

I run my 200 without a backup battery.

I like to do this anyway (and not just with m100s), because I find myself
A bit of a story behind it. I intended to replace the battery with a super cap
like I did with my 102 and NEC. But the 200 power switch didn’t like it and
the unit would never turn off. At that point I opted to just take it out since
the case on the 200 is not easy to work with. It sits on my
I wonder if nimh leak the way nicd do eventually? My replacement batteries
are all nimh instead of the original nicd.
Or, if a new nimh or nicd is actually certain to leak in 20 or 30 years
just because the original ones did? Maybe better tech means they won't
leak? Or maybe the opposite, maybe

Didn’t quite get that. But if it seems I’m advocating for removing the

I really need to replace my nicad. Thanks for the reminder thread.

I do have a REX, and would be happier just removing the NiCad. Would there
be any harm in doing this,
Are these available anywhere, or do I have to find a donor system? Just got
a like-new 102, but no memory expansion.
I'm assuming QUAD is no longer being made/sold?
Thanks!
Ahh, I see now the original email stated 102. So yeah, those will work.

All,
Those $3 chips work fine in the Model 102, but I believe the pinout for
M100 RAM expansion is slightly different and doesn't plug in directly.
I would have to double check, but I recall the SRAM chips were always on
a carrier PCB to remap the pinout.

Indeed. As a matter of fact there's a lot more to it in an M100: not only is
the pinout substantially different and the required signals are not even all
directly available, but even the pin spacing is not standard.
For an M100 you definitely need an adapter with some extra logic in addition
Are you looking to upgrade a 24k unit to 32k? If so, I have the chip you
need. Mail me privately for details.

Great, I'll go looking on the intrawebs :)
You don't happen to have another REX, do you? :)

The chips are available they are standard 8Kx8 SRAM. Should be able to find
some on line.
Unfortunately the QUAD is only for the Model 100, it will not fit the 102.
Congratulations on your new addition :)

Wow, a quick check reveals a 8kX8 SRAM on ebay for $3. Didn't those
"memory modules" cost about $30?

Sorry, I meant why not just remove it. That's what I did with all my Tandys.

Thanks, Willard! I managed to read the BCR files from the original tape
(amazingly durable) into the Model 100 with my “new” non-Radio Shack BCR.
It works, though I am still amazed at how sensitive the reading is to so
many factors including just basic spacing and contrast of the bar pattern,
