For VoiceOver on the MacBook Pro, if Command-F5 or Fn-Command-F5 does not work,
you may need your daughter to set up a separate account for you, so VoiceOver
can be configured to come up automatically, or else have her configure the
system preference settings under Accessibility
It may be easier for her to just update the software. After all, it is her
computer.
