I am probably going to take the plunge on my mac mini.
Can anyone point me to a good guide to doing a clean instal of Mavericks,
preferably step by step and including how to transfer my existing preferences

Sure. set up a keyboard shortcut in system prefs, keyboard, then after that you
will have to do a bit of exploring as my short carried over from ml. Iset up
cmd shift n as in notification center.

Try bringing up your Audio Midi Setup, either by using Spotlight to look for
Audio Midi, or else from Finder move to your Utilities folder with
Command-Shift-U, then press a u to move to Audio Midi Setup and launch it

Hello all. I was just curious if it is better to upgrade to mavericks via the
mac app store or software update on the mac? Also I wanted to thank those who
answered my question about CCleaner and i went with onyx it works really well.

For all practical purposes, either upgrade method is the same, they get you to
the same place. Software update was traditionally used, but it doesn't matter.
