Hello Andy, As far as I know, you can’t change this behaviour. But what’s so difficult about doing Cmd-down Arrow to get to the last row? Alternatively, you can do VO-Shift-End to get to the last cell. Hello Sarah, Here’s how I am able to rearrange columns in the classic view of Mail in Mavericks 10.9.4. Press VO+Shift+\ to move focus to the column headers. 3. Press VO+left or right arrows to move focus to the “status” column header. 4. Press VO+Command+Shift+Spacebar to perform a mouse-down click. 5. Press VO+right or left arrow to move focus where you want to drop the status column. VO will announce the name of each header as you move past it. 6. When you’ve reached the desired location for your status column, press VO+Command+Shift+Spacebar to perform a mouse-up. Re: How can I stop streadsheets opening in Numbers at the top cell all the time?
Hi Anne - When I do CMD down arrow, I just get that ding sound that indicates the key stroke doesn’t exist, same for VO shift down arrow, that’s why I asked on list. Maybe I’am not using Numbers correctly. Each time I open a spreadsheet, I land in the layout area. I have to hit VO shift down arrow twice to actually get in to the body of the spreadsheet. Once there, I can’t do CMD down arrow to get to the end of the spreadsheet as mentioned above - Andy On 16 Aug 2014, at 10:54, Anne Robertson a...@anarchie.org.uk wrote: Hello Andy, As far as I know, you can’t change this behaviour. Re: a question about sharing files between two partitions
I could be wrong, but I don't think you can share files between partitions. Also, they say the best way to test this beta is to get your system the way you want it, do a time machine backup, and then do the upgrade. If it's not what you want or like, then you can go bak to mavericks. Some are partitioning, but I can confirm that the beta has a bug in partitioning. Even if you have a second partition named something else, the beta names them the same thing. Even when you try to delete one, it doesn't give you that space back. So you will have to boot into disc recovery, erase both partitions, and then restore from the time machine backup. The only reason I am still on the beta, is because mavericks won't let me use my iTunes library because it says it is from a newer version. And my iTunes library is over 6TB and that is to much to do over. JMO Are you a Christian? Looking for a convenient bible study? Do you have Skype? Re: Accessible firewall for the mac?
Hello Michael, Little Snitch is a great security utility, and much of it is actually quite VO accessible. Unfortunately, you will need a sighted person to tick one checkbox in order to turn on that accessibility. I’ve included instructions below. (Please don’t flame the messenger about this particular accessibility gotcha… I’ve already had my beard singed previously on this same subject, thread available in the archives.) :-) Also, please be forewarned that This app is not for the impatient or faint-of-heart. It can be very chatty and verbose in it’s default configuration. However, for the User who is willing and able to take the time to learn and configure the myriad settings within this app, it can provide some good information and another layer of security. Here’s how to install the app and enable VO access. This assumes the latest releases of Mavericks and Little Snitch. 1. Install Little Snitch and restart the Mac when prompted. While the Little Snitch installation process is VO accessible, I recommend not installing it unless a sighted person is available to perform steps 2 through 5 below, otherwise Little Snitch might start blocking network communications with no way for a blind User to know what is happening. 2. Launch applications / Little Snitch Configuration.app 3. Open the Little Snitch Preferences. 4. In the Security tab, tick the checkbox labeled “Allow GUI Scripting..” This will enable VO to interact with most parts of Little Snitch. You might need to restart the Mac again at this point. One part of the app which I’m pretty sure is not VO accessible is the “Network Monitor” pane. Re: I think I broke mail
Three things, first of all, the word would be ignorant and not stupid. You're not stupid you just don't have certain information, And there's no reason to apologize for that. Secondly, if I were you I would completely forget about windows as a reference point for learning the Mac. They are two different animals, and It will only interfere with your understanding of the Mac operating system. Re: Accessible firewall for the mac?
Hi, do also take a look at the open source project icefloor. Its a firewall that can be used in adition to the default firewall of Mac OS. It is possible to build custom firewall roules, get an overview on the connections on the Mac, block applications, etc. The app is very accessible and can be used with VoiceOver. Cheers, Christian Am 16.08.2014 um 16:53 schrieb Bryan Jones openses...@me.com: Hello Michael, Little Snitch is a great security utility, and much of it is actually quite VO accessible. Hello Andy, You should repair permissions after installing new software and after updates. People who only use their Macs for simple tasks can get away with not repairing permissions, but as soon as you start using more complex programs such as Numbers, you’re going to encounter anomalous behaviour just as you have already done. Hello Eleanor, To repair permissions: • Open your Utilities folder (Cmd-Shift-u); • Type dis to get quickly to Disk Utility and open it (Cmd-o); • Interact with the table and navigate down to your hard drive (probably the second item in the list); • Stop interacting and navigate twice to the right to make sure that First Aid is selected; • Navigate straight down as far as Repair disk permissions and press VO-Space: • You can follow progress by navigating up to the Results table and interacting with it; • When the repair is complete, it will say “Permissions repair complete” at the bottom of the Results table; • Quit Disk utility. Hi Anne - I’ve always respected your knowledge and experience, right from first coming to the mac and this list just over 12 months ago. Like I said, the only reason I haven’t done repairs etc was from fear of messing something up. Now a feel more confident with my mac, I am more brave about doing things. I am as you commented, a lite user of the Mac, in so much as what I do is pretty basic and strait forward, even my spreadsheets are just basic house keeping these days. However, I did upgrade to Mavericks a couple of weeks ago, so maybe now is a good time to look at repairing permissions - Andy On 16 Aug 2014, at 18:09, Anne Robertson a...@anarchie.org.uk wrote: Hello Andy, You should repair permissions after installing new software and after updates. Hello Eleanor, To repair permissions: . Open your Utilities folder (Cmd-Shift-u); . Type dis to get quickly to Disk Utility and open it (Cmd-o); . Interact with the table and navigate down to your hard drive (probably the second item in the list); . Stop interacting and navigate twice to the right to make sure that First Aid is selected; . Navigate straight down as far as Repair disk permissions and press VO-Space: . You can follow progress by navigating up to the Results table and interacting with it; . When the repair is complete, it will say Permissions repair complete at the bottom of the Results table; . Quit Disk utility. There will always be a few things to repair. Matthew, This utility installs the distro you want onto the thumbdrive, and you boot it up, like it is on a CD/DVD. So you will be a live user, and can install it along side your OS or just use it from the thumbdrive. Re: iBooks
Hello Gordon, Here’s where to find your iBooks: ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iBooks/ Unfortunately, the names are not meaningful and the file type is epub. As far as I know, you can only open them in iBooks, unless you created them yourself, in which case, you can open them with Adobe Digital Editions. However you open your books, you can still try using VO-Shift-c to copy what’s in the VoiceOver Cursor to the clipboard and then paste it into TextEdit. In Adobe Digital Editions, this gives you a page at a time. I'm not exactly sure how to do that… I'm a very new Mac user. Re: a question about sharing files between two partitions
If you just want to share a folder on one partition to a folder on another partition, (or a single file) you might be out of luck. However, it's common practice on unix systems to mount several partitions into various places in the file system which of course makes those files available to the host os, regardless of where they may be on the drive. Most unix servers have multiple drives mounted in various locations on the file system, especially for backup or file serving purposes. On my linux box, I have 3 hard drives. One is the main drive, and mounted at the root of the file system. A second drive is mounted under the /home folder, thereby giving me an entire drive for user directories, and removing the most used piece of any server off the main drive. In addition, I have a third drive mounted under the /usr/local directory, thereby allowing me to put any programs I like in the /usr/ local/ folder, and the entire hiearchy will be completely independent of the main linux drive. If I were running this server for general internet usage, and I'd have various users logging in regularly, I'd probably add a fourth drive, and mount it in the /var/mail location, so that user email boxes wouldn't eat system resources that could otherwise be used for system specific functions. Much better than quotas, and the system won't crash if the drive gets full, since all the mail files are on their own drive, and thus won't affect the main system functionality. Beyond mounting entire drives, the only way to get files to show up in other locations (such as on other partitions) is to link the files into that location. However, this raises it's own set of issues, as depending on your unix version, permission settings, kind of link, and partition types, it's very possible that you won't be able to see the newly linked file. All of these issues are of course resolvable, but it helps to have knowledge of unix file systems before trying to do such a thing. Unfortunately, I don't have any links to tutorials or the like about unix file systems and how to care for and organize them, but a quick read of the mount umount ln and cp man pages (although rather dry reading in places) should give you a firm grounding in various file linkage methods. One note though, Do not use the mv command to move files from one partition to another under osx. Most unix versions handle this type of thing quite well, (first copying the file to the new device before removing it from the old one, or simply altering the file allocation table to point to the new file location if the file is on the same logical partition.) However, for some reason, osx does not always do this, and it is possible to lose a file entirely if mv commands are used cross device boundaries. Copying files of course does not have this problem. hth --- Mac Access At Mac Access Dot Net --- To reply to this post, please address your message to mac-access@mac-access.net You can find an archive of all messages postedto the Mac-Access forum at the list's public Mail Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access@mac-access.net/. Re: iBooks
Anne (as always) offers excellent points on the ibook files. However, I have found that it's possible to simply use the unzip program (in terminal) to uncompress the ibook files. They are indeed simply epub books, but as with any other epub formatted ebooks, if they are encrypted, (and many of the ibooks are) you will not be able to make any sense out of them even after unzipping them, because their content will be encrypted by a method that is both complex and (slightly) nonstandard. (at least based on some poking around I've done). There is an iso standards document for epub formats, and it allows for encryption of content. I have been unable to reconcile the apple ibooks with said iso documents, though it's possible my understanding of the encryption/decryption method is incomplete, as that part of the document wasn't the easiest to follow. Most epub readers use prewritten libraries released by different manufacturers to do all the heavy lifting, and don't really write their own routines for this. My attempts to do so meat with very little success, and since it was more of a curiosity thing for me than anything else, I gave up on it and moved on to other more interesting reading. :) But, then again, I've rarely had much luck trying to write code to do things based on iso documentation, though I do have to say, the rfc documents are much better in this regard, I've had no trouble in many cases turning internet protocol documents into operational code. But anyway, I just wanted to let folks know they can unzip ibooks, and examine their contents, just don't expect to get usable results most of the time. :) hth. --- Mac Access At Mac Access Dot Net --- To reply to this post, please address your message to mac-access@mac-access.net You can find an archive of all messages postedto the Mac-Access forum at the list's public Mail Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access@mac-access.net/. For iOS8 devs: a feature request for iCloud drive
Hi all. I have a request for apps that do not natively sync with iCloud drive. Bard mobile is a great app, but with a 16 gb iPod, not all books wanted can be gotten for offline reading. So, people should be able to backup data from the app's documents list to iCloud drive, I'll just call it iDrive. So perhaps when a person goes to delete a book, if a setting for legacy apps as I'll call them, apps like read2go, which hasn't been updated in years, the system will ask if you wish to archive the file in iDrive for storage. Then, a folder will be created for the app's files in iDrive, and the app will be able to pull docs from that folder as if it were a native flash storage. Or, you'll be able to pull files back into the app when you want. That'd be better, as the app won't be confused why the doc isn't loading quickly, and the user won't either.
