Accessing root log-in credentials
Hi all As part of the fix process for our mail system, I need to log into our machine as “root” I always thought that once at the log-in screen, you could simply use “Root” as the user ID, and “root” as the password. Apparently, this isn’t the case any longer; although our old Snow Leopard machine does let me in that way. How, then, does one enable root access? This is something I need to do urgently, so a rapid response, possibly, off list, would be very much appreciated. I’m clearly a little ring-rusty when it comes to my Unix/Linux skills, something I’n really going to have to brush up on. Thanks. Hello everybody As you probably know by now if you have your finger on the pulse of virtualisation technologies, the battle of the giants is really hotting up now. As somebody who is fortunate enough to be able to evaluate both Parallels Desktop 10 and Fusion Professional 7 in fully licensed modes, I can tell you that there is a really noticeable speed increase in both of these products with the release of Apple’s latest technologies and APIs build into the operating system to make it both Mavericks and Yosemite compatible. I am currently running Windows 8.1 Professional under Fusion 7 and Lynne is as I write finishing off the setup of the sane operating system under Parallels. By the way, we’re going to make it easy for anybody who wants to download the new evaluation of Fusion, if, that is, there’s any demand for it. We will post it in an accessible place and let you grab it at your heart’s content. That aside, I can honestly say that running Fusion now with this new version is just like running Windows in a native environment. They’ve obviously done a lot of fine tuning and the result is staring me in the face right now. And it honestly could not have come at a better time. Just as we’re expanding what we’re offering to our clients and friends, (more about that soon), so this comes along. Actually it was released on 2 September, but I just didn’t get around do doing anything about it until now. All I can say is “Wow!” Anybody want it made available for download? Re: VMWare Does It Again!
It still is, but I can use it. The way I do it is quite simple. Lynne configured and set up a virtual machine. All I do is click on the virtual machine (to which we have an alias) and it loads, simple as that. The nice thing about the Parallels interface is that there is no issue with the VM console getting in the way as there sometimes is with Fusion. Re: VMWare Does It Again!
Hi Colin Correct. But as I indicated in a previous post, I can use Parallels too, once the VM is configured. My better half configured it all for me, and just put an alias on our desktop. And then, away we go. Of course, I am comparing Fusion with Parallels 10 which is the current release. Re: Fusion 7 Pro and Windows 8.1
Matthew Whether necessary or not, this isn’t really the place to discuss Windows. We do run a sister group where that is permissible, of course. Windows-Access would naturally bring one to assume same. As it happens, I too must use that OS for work, but only for work related issues. I deliberately and very determinedly avoid it for my own computing purposes. Lynne, at work, is totally OS X. But she’s lucky, her small office does as she dictates, not as others do. She runs Parallels at home sometimes because yes there are still a small number of clients with whom she cannot communicate any other way than on MSN and we try to keep that off our Macs. We don’t use Adium any longer because we don’t really have a need for it. When we go on Twitter, now and then, there are dedicated clients for OS X and iOS so we don’t need Windows for that. Anyway, I am rambling. On 20 Sep 2014, at 13:28, Matthew Chao mattc...@verizon.net wrote: Thanks, Gordon. Re: IOS 8 and Bluetooth keyboard
Work arounds aside, it is a bug and Apple needs to be bugged to fix it. I did speak with the Apple engineer and he said that it will continue to be reported as a bug and likely will be fixed within one of the updates to iOS 8 that will be released in the next few weeks. I had the feeling that if there aren't enough people making noise about this the problem won't be brought to the top of the pile of problems. Also, as someone on this list pointed out, the bug has been reported in a beta cycle, so it isn't an unknown problem. If noise isn't made it won't get resolved. Making noise on here or on Twitter is good to get the word out about the problem so that if people who make significant use of the keyboard don't want to be inconvenienced they can stick with iOS 7, but contacting Apple in your preferred manner and letting them know that making it inconvenient to use a Bluetooth keyboard is an unacceptable accessibility feature is also a good idea.. They seemed receptive to addressing user issues. Cheers! Sue B. On 9/19/14, 1:28 PM, Juanita Martin wrote: I'm using the BT keyboard and as long as Quick Nav is off, everything is fine. Re: Burning a DVD that Will work on the Mac
Hi, Gordon. Unable to see the volume. It doesn't show up on the desktop. In fact, I burned it twice and tried it on two Macbooks. The disk just spun, stopped, and spun again, with no results. Re: IOS 8 and Bluetooth keyboard
I already reported in the public cycle. They said they would look in to it. I heard that they have a dedicated team to close duplicate bug reports so if all of are bus are being closed due to being duplicates I see no point in reporting the bugs I've been reporting. I still do it though. On Sep 20, 2014, at 9:26 PM, Sue Bernardo s...@mindspring.com wrote: Work arounds aside, it is a bug and Apple needs to be bugged to fix it.
