thanks John, I'll save your instructions as well as I haven't gotten around to
doing this whole thing yet. Between you and Gordon's help I think I can do this
thing just fine!

thanks,

Interact with the table to select your internal hard drive. Warning, do not
choose the Macintosh HD, choose above that which usually is a bunch of

Stop interacting, VO right to partition and VO space. Next choose OSX
journaling, and make sure when you VO space on the combo box referring to
partitioning, don't choose but instead choose 1 partition.

You also can name the untitled to Macintosh HD.

When the above is complete, go to option making sure it's set to GUID or
 something like that.

After you go to ok, then you want to apply.

This is how I installed ML but of course I had a TimeMachine backup from
Lion. It sounds like a lot to go through but you can partition the hard
drive in minutes comparing to erase a volume which may take hours.

I'm assuming you know how to start when you boot from the ML USB stick.

Hope this helps and write if I might have missed something

2012-09-06 Thread Gordon Smith
Hi Cait

To be absolutely honest, I think that some, (and I stress that word, Some) of
the so-called support people at both Apple and also Microsoft are just trained
monkeys. Some of them are not fit to be holding the positions they do. That
said, I have also encountered a number of absolutely terrific support people at
Apple, although it seems to be necessary to go direct to engineering to find
them.

I still believe that you have a couple of options here:

1. Try backing everything up from your external drive, re-formatting that
drive and then restoring its contents.

2. Do a total fresh install, as I indicated earlier.

As for the error being associated with iTunes, that's a distinct possibility.
iTunes libraries do seem to get corrupted quite easily and I know that I have
had to re-create our library on a number of occasions.

In any event, I hope you succeed, and that you end up with your Mac back in
tip-top condition.

Gordon

commonly encountered with i tunes. He had me unplug both my external drives
and do a restart and that *seemed* to put things right.

Now, having said all that, this guy also had no clue whatsoever about

I'll keep your directions and plan on doing the fresh install this coming

Re: eror - 50

2012-09-05 Thread Cait Furness
Thanks Gordon. I'll save your instructions.

I actually called apple yesterday since I flubbed up and did the reinstall
incorrectly and did it right over top of the previous one without erasing
files-big oops! In talking to the apple tech, he said that the error is one
commonly encountered with i tunes. He had me unplug both my external drives
and do a restart and that *seemed* to put things right.

Now, having said all that, this guy also had no clue whatsoever about
voiceover, even though I called the special number for voiceover users! So,
I'll keep your directions and plan on doing the fresh install this coming
weekend when I can devote time to it! Right now I'm not getting the message
anymore, but doing things fresh can't hurt, right?

Thanks again!
Cait

 Hi Cait

If you have the recovery tool on a USB thumb drive, just insert the drive,
and when you boot the system hold down the option key. Give it 10/20
seconds, then hit the left/right cursor key once and press Enter. This
should cause your machine to boot from the thumb drive and give you the
options. I strongly suggest that, in the first table of options, you select
Disk Utility and then re-partition your hard drive. Be sure to select Mac
OS X (Journaled) from the list of options. Then in the Options section,
select GUID partition type, click Apply, then click Partition.

Once done, then you can proceed to the install as normal.

This is a problem which I've only seen once in over 7 years of Mac usage. I
honestly can't remember whether this indicates a hardware problem or a
software one. I thick it was software, and I hope it was.
