The problem mysteriously and suddenly fixed itself! I have absolutely no idea
why this was happening, but it is not doing so now either with or without the
sidebar visible.
This, I guess, has to be written off and put down to one of those strange
anomalies whose cause we shall never

As I said in my last post, it's just disappeared, works fine. Neither Lynne
nor I did anything to fix the problem. One minute it was broken and, just as
suddenly, it wasn't. But I ain't gonna complain, for once something happened
to cause the problem I had to just go away, and now

This sounds like a file possibly the xml file has somehow got screwed up, so,
if I were you, i'd try creating a new ITunes library and see if that solves the
problem.
I know its a pain as it may mean rebuilding your library from scratch, however
in the long run its probably faster
